1. perfect definition of an "extremist"...
eporue ,   europe   (05.23.10)
"...those who are discriminated by society for being different – do not respect others who are different than them."
2. the discrimination isn't from the Israeli gov
ghostq   (05.23.10)
it's from their own communities, they chose to be racist, so quit the whining. if you ask me there should be one Israeli praying customs and not what ever they got.
3. Discrimination????
Phoenix ,   Israel   (05.23.10)
The Haredim have no shame; they discriminate everybody. Their own women for being women. The rest of jewish society for not being Haredi narrow minded and primitive as them. How they espect to be seing as part of the Israeli society??? Start respecting the rest of society then things will change for you.
4. Will anything ever change?
moriah ,   sacto calif   (05.23.10)
In this article and every talkback -- sinat chinam. Sad indeed!
5. Believe me, I experienced more here
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (05.23.10)
I worked in Los Angeles and in Israel, I wear a kippa at work and believe me, I had more descrimination in Israel than in Los Angeles. For a Haradi to work in Israel in the Army, in the City, in the Government, he must have protection, It is very hard to get hired if you wear a black kippa and have a beard. I know, I worked here in many place and it really sucks!!
6. suffer
colin   (05.24.10)
Haridim suffer ethnic discrimination Fantastic .Pity the percentage is so low. WHAT IS A HARIDI--PARASITE,LEACH. REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE STATE OF ISRAEL.DOES NOT DO MILITARY OR PUBLIC SERVICE. DISTRUCTIVE LOUTS. AND THE ABSOLUTE SCUM OF THE EARTH.. Why should there not be discrimination. The average Israeli deteasts these vermin
7. Why even survey them?
Talula ,   Israel   (05.24.10)
When they contribute to the country, when they actually give something back, instead of taking and destroying, maybe they'd feel less discriminated against. This country would cease to exist without the secular population, it's those who should be taken care of and surveyed- not a worthless bunch of money-grabbing parasites.
8. #7 Qualify your vitriol
Eliyahu Konn ,   Yrushalayim   (05.24.10)
There is likely a sizable portion of Charedi that are not a worthless bunch of money-grabbing parasites just as there is likely a sizable portion of the "seculari" that aren't hedonistic, Torah rejecting morons.
9. subjective trash
observer   (05.24.10)
Perhaps the most disturbing fact that emerges from the article is the blind acceptance of the statement by one of the leaders of the survey: 'According to Becker, the situation is absurd because those who are discriminated by society for being different – do not respect others who are different than them.' It is difficult to comprehend that someone with such a primitive definition of plurality should not be pilloried for expressing such views. Either commentators have totally discounted this blockhead, or they agree. Does plurality mean a rainbow state? Why? To what end? Oh I realise that to better serve the state - canon fodder, as it used to be called - a mindless, vanilla populace is what is needed, and the IDF still aspires to creating that and, apart from the unashamed dictatorships, Israel must be the last country to adhere to it. Plurality actually means that everyone retains his own lifestyle whilst accommodating others; it has nothing to do with lack of respect for others. The Israeli obsession with destroying all vestiges of cultural inheritances, and subscribing to the artificial Socialist-Zionist model of the 1940's is something the world could well do without.
10. Haredim are anti-Semites
Jason ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.24.10)
Maybe if they didn't draw swastikas on Jewish homes and buildings, didn't set fires to Israeli flags, didn't call secular and non-Hardeim Jews inferior, didn't throw rocks at Jews, they wouldn't be discriminated against. They are a sorry excuse for being Jews.

Golan ,   modiin   (05.25.10)
I understand your anger. But many discriminations faced by Haredim is by Haredim. My girlfriend who is haredit lived in a Haredi town and was thrown out! Why? Because she was divorced. Haredi Ashkenazim don;t seem to like sfaradim. And since the majority in Israel is Sfaradi I can see where the numbers can go up. the problem is haredim are racist, intolerant group (for the most part but not all... not in any way all) and many of the thigns they suffer is because of their closedness. ashkenazim/sfaradim...hasidim/mitnagdim.... Dutch/non Dutch haredim....those who stand up on their heads when drinking water and those who are less "machmirim" in the water department mitzvos. so while I would not say they are anti semitic they are a confused angry closed and ignorant group. But once again not all and not the majority. but many!
12. to #9 you r mambling, they r not zionists
ghostq   (05.25.10)
and the racist part r religious, not zionists, they don't serve the IDF, or even work, and they r mega racist, like in other countries I reckon they should abandon the ashkenaz sphared version of praying and return to the Israeli one vesion of praying, the kind that they used to before. the exile did it mostly, and now they must abandon it cause they r home.
13. if you want to make aliyah to central region
Ram   (05.25.10)
and you either wear a beard or sport a yarmulka, you WILL be mocked or ignored or asked why you didn't move to Jerusalem (where freaks like you blend in better). This is Israel - polarised, unpleasant, nasty know-it-all schmendricks everywhere...

Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (05.25.10)
Haredim discriminating against other Haredim is not my business. I couldn't care less.
15. don't get it
Alex ,   Tel Aviv   (05.30.10)
Why is the discrimination they face called "ethnic"? They reject the idea of ethnic Judaism; to them it's all about faith. So the very headline doesn't even make sense.
