lydia ,   Brisbane   (05.21.10)
We'll all listen to his call to sanction Iran.
2. A political scientist?
Charles ,   Los Angeles   (05.21.10)
It is clear that Mr. Gilboa's fear is not a ploy by Iran, but his real fear is that resistance to the sanctions by the non-committed nations will make the sanctions ineffective. And in this regard he is correct. And furthermore there is no great enthusiasm for sanctions by some of the most important players like China and Russia either. Mr. Gilboa and Israel will have come to accommodate themselves to the Iranian bomb. Israel, long term, holds a losing hand. It has grossly squandered its opportunities.
3. Sanctions aimed at weaken Hamas/Hezbollah more than Iran
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (05.21.10)
Once Iran's nuclear reactor go online in August then Iran will become a nuclear power at some point. US/Israel must bomb reactor before it goes online or get Iran to deal. Bombing a working reactor would cause too many political problem and set a dangerous precedent that could leave US/EU/Israel reactors at risk.
4. Sanctions are a waste of time

6. Only actions count.
Ron B. ,   Lod   (05.21.10)
An Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear installations will rebuild Israel's eroded deterrent posture and put paid the notion that Israel is no longer a military power to be reckoned with. And the destruction of Iran's nuclear capacity will weaken Iran's military posture throughout the region and so weaken its terror proxies from Iraq to Lebanon to Gaza to Afghanistan. In short, a successful Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear installations will demonstrate to real rather than fake realists that a strong Israel is indispensible to regional stability and international security. Without any doubts, it will help the democrats in Iran as explained at : http://xrl.us/be82fr

"Israel, long term, holds a losing hand. It has grossly squandered its opportunities". You tossed in the above negative paragraph without saying what you mean by it. Please explain what you meant by it, and also your subject line. Michael
9. #1 - Israel has NEVER threatened to use nuclear weapons
Redbourn ,   Arad, Israel   (05.21.10)
Even in 1973 after Israel was attacked and in a very weakened state it never once threatened to use nuclear weapons. Whereas Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continually threatens many countries before his country even has an atom bomb or a means of delivery. It important not to confuse apples and oranges. Michael
10. “The Iranian Ploy…”
k1w1 ,   NZ   (05.21.10)
…“nobody buys into it [the deal], with the exception of […] Iran supporters worldwide.” And people like myself, people who do not support any country having or acquiring nuclear weapons, who do not support Iran’s repressive regime, but who do not believe Iran deserves to be attacked and hope to see war averted - strangers in Israel, I know…

You are as delusional as GW and Obama. Nothing has ever backfired. What you do not understand is the fact that while keeping all the options open, Ahmadi-mad, has take away the possession of the most effective weapon that America, in general, and Israel, in particular, ever had. And that is and has always been Propaganda, brain washing the public by the millions and "Victim-hood drama". Will MY PEOPLE ever learn. Sorry, but dobt it.
13. A Slight to Lula
k1w1 ,   NZ   (05.21.10)
Calling the deal negotiated by the Brazilian president and backed by Turkey, a crude and transparent ploy by Iran to trick the world is an insult to the abilities, efforts and the intelligence of President Lula. It should not be a surprise that Iran would agree to a deal brokered by someone other than the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia (you know, countries that have threatened and ripped Iran off for the past 30 years), although, judging by Clinton’s shrill reaction, it was a surprise to her. Is this an Iranian ploy to avoid further sanctions and acts of war being visited on them? Of course it‘s a ploy, that‘s why the Iranians agreed to almost exactly the same deal that the US et al demanded they accept last October. But who can blame Iran for that? Any Israeli child can tell you: every country has the right to defend itself from attack. Again, don’t be surprised by the obvious. Has the Brazilian president been tricked by Iran? I doubt it. Clinton and the US might be squealing with outrage about being sidestepped, but if they don’t accept the deal it will show the world that they were never sincere about “reaching out” and coming to a diplomatic resolution with Iran, and the world might not be so keen to follow them as they did into Iraq. But the deal will go ahead, and the US will secretly be pleased that it will avoid another crippling war it can ill afford halfway across the world. The squealing is for the benefit of Israel and the War party who are hell-bent on attacking Iran. China and Russia have both said in the last day or so that it will be business as usual for them in Iran regardless of the US sponsored sanctions, which should give an indication of the way it will all pan out.

I highly doubt you are a Jew or a Jew lover, but for argument sake: The Jews are tired of being the victims. If the arabs want to assume that role let them.
15. #12, Dear Partial Observer
Jew Lover ,   Canada   (05.21.10)
To love you, or a Jew or an Arab I don't have to be a Jew or Arab, I don't have to be part of the tribe to love. I fully agree with you that Jews should not be the victims, ever, nor should Arabs be. For Jews having been the victims in the past, has resulted in Arabs being the victim today and I don't want to see Arab victim-hood today result in Jews being the victim any time in the future. There is only one, one and only one way to end this madness, and that is not through arrogance, victim-hood drama, European mentality of discrimination, sanctions, destruction, war. No weapon, atomic or otherwise will ever ensure Israel’s existence, no amount of dominant military power will last for ever. It is the lesson from Human history, from the history of Jews. There is enough land for all to share, there is enough respect in Islam for Abraham, David, Moses, and Judaism for you, we and them all live together. Is it that difficult to grasp this, or is it that the likes of Nathanyahoo, Liberman, GW, Madam Clinton, Ahmadi-mad should for ever rule and exploit our kindness, our pride, our fear. Will MY PEOPLE ever wake up and save themselves and the rest.

Dont be so convinced that they are so in-charge of the war of nerves, they are not, they are fearing the sanctions through there teeth. Have a close look at the footage of amadinajad at there deal signing, his eyes are so blood shot and he looked incredably scared about this situation as if his own knees were about to be dis-integrated with in the next minute. So obviuosly theres something going down here, and they look like they have problems as they are in trouble, trouble of the truth and this means the hideing of there bomb program, so I think very scared at this point.

you are wrong. didin't you realize that the usa congress and house finalized a crippling sanctions on iran in a bill they will activate after the unsc slaps iran with tepid sanctions???? it was signed already and is waiting in the docket to be activated with obama's consent after the weak sanctions are slapped. it is a unilateral bill that says america will sanction any company, european or otherwise around the word that does any oil and gas business with iran. this is the real sanction that should have a deadly impact on iran's economy and regime. this is like hitting them where it hurts most and will bring their economy to a standstill. any european or world company that does oil and gas deals with iran and sells them oil and gas (iran doesn't possess the knowledge and infrastructure to refine their own oil and gasoline extraction and this is why they import 60% of its oil/gas needs from other nations) any nation doing the above business with oran will not do business with the usa. any company that supplies iran with gas and oil will not be able to do business with the usa. this is the sanction american unilateral bill in a nut shell. what do you think, that these companies will prefere doing business with iran knowing that they will never be allowed to do business with the richest country in the world, the usa? do you believe any country or foreign company will sacrifice its business ties with the usa in the billions and thousands of billions of dollars to satisfy iran's gas and oil needs??? you are dellusional. no company in the world will be willing to forego the usa business deals and environment and sacrifice themselves on iran's alter. not a single one. the usa will see to it that these companies do not have insurance and will make it very difficult to send iran the components they need because the unsc resolution includes a close that forbids iran to have tanks, things for their nuclear reactor, parts for centrifuges, military jets, military choppers and missiles from abroad. russia has put a stop to the s-300 for now, trying to extract more concessions from the usa and dilute the sanctions against iran. however, after the diluted unsc sanctions (the 4th ones), the usa congrerss and house unilateral sanctions bill against gas and oil sales to iran will be put into effect. iran will be finished and her economy is tatters. as we speak, obama mobilized 2 more war ships that set sail to the gulf a week ago. why do you think that is??? think again! hameed aboughaze, iranian
20. #8 losing hand and squandered opportunities
Charles ,   Los Angeles   (05.22.10)
You are correct Michael, the negative paragraph you refer to is not relevant to the subject, which is that the author, as I see the problem, is actually concerned that the sanctions will be ineffective. The paragraph you refer to is a product of my animus for Israel. Thanks for bringing to my attention.
21. More and more countries are praising the

Iran-Turkey-Brazil deal. Japan and the Non-Aligned Nations, all 118 of them, the Secretary General of the UN and the head of the IAEA have all praised the deal. So to call this historic event an "Iranian ploy" is sheer ignorance.
22. hameed, your schoolboy crush on...
Persian CAT   (05.22.10)
the "crippling sanctions" have caused you to lose sight of the reality. You wish your wet dreams that "no company in the world will be willing to forego the usa business deals and environment and sacrifice themselves on iran's alter. not a single one." were true, But the fact that has gone right over your head is that many many countries and companies have ignored the US unilateral sanctions up to now, and many will do the same in the future. I feel sorry for Iran-haters like you, because you guys have put your blinders on and have resorted to utter nonsense and dangerous hallucinations. Russia, for your information, has announced that the S-300 deal WILL go through. You need to get out more, homie, because you seem to have lost it.
23. #19. The West is Ill, Not Up to It
k1w1 ,   NZ   (05.22.10)
The US sanctions bill to be signed off by Congress and the House, if it passes the White House, should be about as effective as the other sanctions imposed on Iran to date. Jiang Jiemin, chairman of China National Petroleum, certainly didn’t appear to believe the sanctions will be crippling for his company when, several days ago, he announced: "We will implement our projects in Iran as usual." Nor did Sergei Kiriyenko, chief of Rosatom, the state-run Russian nuclear corporation who are building Iran’s almost completed nuclear reactor at Bushehr, seem too bothered when he said: "The resolution on Iran being drawn up will not affect these plans." Consider Iran’s vast untapped natural resources and China’s insatiable need for more energy to drive its growth into the future. Consider the US with it’s $15trillion debt and the fact the western world’s closely-linked banking system is in crisis (don’t expect your government to admit the true extent - bad for politics) and poised to topple like a house of cards, along with the fact the US military is bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan for the next, er… well, who knows how long they’ll be stuck over there. Now, consider again the subject of countries and companies wanting to do business with Iran in spite of a bunch of hollow fools on Capitol Hill. The US is owned by China, to the tune of trillions, and they will jolly-well do as their master say - no trouble. As for the two US warships that set sail for the Persian Gulf: perhaps they have been sent over to be sunk by the Iranians, which would be a great way to unite the US sheeple and distract them from the fact they are bankrupt and that soon, in spite of all the fiddling, the money printers wont be able to keep up with the bills. Certainly they haven’t been dispatched to take care of the rag-tag teenage Somali pirates plaguing that part of the world since, according to US Adm. Mark Fitzgerald, the US navy can’t “sustain the level of operation” required to deal with them. But it wont get that far (a US carrier destroyed by Iran in the Persian Gulf) because the world will accept the deal and the US will have to suck it up. Unfortunately for you, Hameed, there will be no war soon with Iran on CNN for your edification.
24. :: Hameed, the question is if this really matters any longer
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (05.22.10)
Crippling sanctions will not deter the Dictatorship of Iran to yield because the criminals at the top will not suffer but the common people will and the Supreme Villains couldn't care less. There are 2 ways to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons: One is to topple the regime from the inside. The second one is a military strike on nuclear facilities that will destroy its ability to produce anything or at least set it back by several years until the regime is toppled. My personal opinion is, although Iran makes every effort in this direction, that Iran so far has been incapable of enriching uranium to any degree. There are many reasons for that and I will name few. The know how in Iran is not good enough. Iranian scientists that have the knowledge may not be fully contributing what they know. The poor safety record of industry in Iran has already caused many accidents in the nuclear facilities. There is intentional sabotage by dissidents working in those facilities. Several scientists have mysteriously died or defected to the West. Russia supplies faulty equipment to Iran because it is not in their long term interest that Muslim Iran should have a nuclear bomb on their border separated by the ever shrinking Caspian Sea. Another sign is that Iran seems to be willing to have its raw uranium enriched somewhere else because of its failure to do it at home. I believe that their concern is that once outside Iran the uranium will not go back to Iran as they backed out of the deal with Russia a while ago.

While your tone indicates an affection for the vilest powers in the world today....rest assured your twisted little prediction of events to come is nothing more than a dream. Do you think the US is some backwater Island at the end of the earth like NZ. We are capable of commanding the world's greatest challenges here in the US while you sip your beer and pontificate about world problems. You can be sure that American ingenuity and perserverence will rein and our poor behavior of the past several decades will be corrected. Don't lose sight of the fact that the 3 top destinations for venture capital in the world continue to be 1 and 2 in the US and 3 in Israel.....must mean something. When was the last time NZ made news about anything significant.....just another loud mouth in a countru that is lucky enough not to have to solve any real problems. No surprise you and your attitude are direct decendents of the disgusting British empire.

As I’ve posted elsewhere, most of the US consumer products are made in other countries and the US manufacturing sector is in decline, and the products it does still make don’t compete well on the world market. In addition, since Nixon, huge tracts of land with its mineral rights have been set aside through the so-called Environmental Protection Agency, as collateral to cover its loans. So, not much export to earn money, unable to exploit its own minerals. Add to that the $15trillion debt the US government owes to the world and it’s obvious that the US is headed for trouble - a large debt and no way to repay it makes for lean times ahead. The estimated interest alone on the debt equals all the personal income tax paid by all Americans. The businesses you mention are home to trillions of dollars of foreign investment, kept there by the promise that the US taxpayer will cover all losses. That’s fine until the taxpayer can’t afford to cover those losses, let alone their government’s debt (more than $1trillion this year), and the foreign investor become nervous. There is one thing in which the US is yet a world leader at producing. With 4% of the world's population and 18% of the economy, the US has 50% of all the lawyers… Your comments about NZ are just silly. Are you a lawyer?

You said: "The president had no other choice but to immediately present the Security Council with a draft agreement on harsher sanctions..." I say: ANYTHING that follows is irrelevant. Russia and China will always veto. Therefore Obama can proclaim his fake opposition to Iran as loudly as he wants. He knows he will never hurt his ally against Israel by anything that happens in the UNSC. You say: "The Iranian ploy is so transparent and crude that nobody in the world buys into it" I say: Except the entire world that thinks it is simply a ploy and refuses to accept that it is supported by the rest of the world. This includes you, Eytan. You say: "Although the negotiations on the new sanctions had not been completed..." *I say: Oh really? Why does that not surprise me? Finally, the last paragraph is preposterous. How is Obama going to -boost- the US status by BOWING to Arab and leaders of inferior nations across the globe? By shredding the Constitution and exempting INTERPOL from US law? By siding with Mexico against his own citizens? By marginalizing his own office in favor of some imagined greater global good? Giving lectures does not make you an expert. You cannot have reason without facts. Your entire article is premise, logic, and reason, but you fail to understand, as academics are wont to fail, there is no wisdom without facts. Your reasoning is sound except for one flaw: The FACTS. Obama's ACTIONS support what *I* say; it is only his words that support what you say.
