BTW Is it possible to capture a sharp picture of a mortar being fired with a normal camera (see AFP photograph accompanying article http://tinyurl.com/25ok4gy)? A 60mm M2 mortar has a muzzle velocity 439 fps (~ 134 mps) That means that at 1/1000th sec (fast even in bright sunlight) it travels more than 5 inches (~13 cm) while the shutter is open. That's too fast to see more than a streak, if at all.
If the motor drive camera is shooting at 3 frames a second there is a good chance it would miss the shell entirely. So even catching a blurred beyond recognition mortar shell with a normal camera is unlikely.
I smell Photoshop!
