1. Plan B is: *One State Solution*
Joy   (05.26.10)
2. Plan Z is the only plan that will succeed :)
Salma ,   Palestine   (05.26.10)
So let us not waste time and try plan after plan, as long as the road to peace is clear to all of us, only what is needed is a courageous, and active players, then everything will be fine.,and everyone will live in peace. Neither the UN nor anyone else will be able to impose a solution on the Palestinians or the "Israelis", because such a solution will be temporary, with no taste. Only ,together we can
3. Plan B is the unmentionable one
eli ,   nahariya, israel   (05.26.10)
That the Arabs resettle their brothers in to the 97% of the Middle East that is Arab controlled.
4. Salma, sorry to say this
Nour ,   Palestine فلسطين   (05.26.10)
...But you sound incredibly naive. The peace song and compromise theme was adopted by the PLO/PA camp since Oslo and Madrid and what's the result? More settlements and the consolidation of the West Bank land grab by settlers. After all these years of "negotiations" I've finally come to the conclusion that the root of the problem is not right or left, Bibi or Meretz, etc. The problem is the Israeli people themselves. Today the majority of them are racists ...i.e. do not even believe we are a people worthy of a national identity or dignity. While they sip beer on Tel Aviv beaches and enjoy their new loot in Palestine, our people (read REFUGEES from historical Palestine) in Gaza are suffering in an inhumane siege. They are stuffed in this tiny strip like sardiens and denied the human right of return. This is while new fake Jews (Khazar converts, Polish "haredi"s, and Ethiopians who have absolutely nothing to do with the land are encouraged to immigrate to populate the very same land we lived on for centuries. Wake up Salma, the problem is the Israeli people who still fantasize about expelling our remaining people from the West Bank and even inside the green line! You can go ahead and label me a cynic, a pessimist, but that is the plain truth based on the real historical account. The only redemption path left for eveyrone is the path of equality, dignity, and justice. That can only be achieved by the ONE STATE solution which many cowards on this talk back don't habe the cojones to admit is the only viable option left in light of continued erosion of Palestinian lands at the hands of Zionism.
5. To Salma
Yossef ,   Rehovot, Israel   (05.26.10)
Yes we need courageous and smart leaders and also two smart people willing to live together. A lot of conditions. The goal seems more-less clear, the path to it is not... For myself I don't know really what I would like. I would be tempted by a 1-state solution, but I am afraid, because of the democratic process, that we will lose control, and I want to live in a jewish state, democratic but jewish. I don't want jews to rule over arabs if they don't want to. But I'm not ready to accept the general racist attitude of the mideast which find normal that jews are forbidden from arab lands when arabs must have all right in the only jewish land of the region. But I want the civil rights respected for everyone, jew, druze, bedouin, plain arab in Israel. I don't want an apartheid state. I want also that a nice collaboration develop between arabs and jews, cultural, economical, between the Jordan and the Medsea. I want to live quietly, in peace, without fear, I want to be welcome in any arab village if I stop to have a humus. I want that everywhere in Israel any arab feel quiet and in peace (like it is the case for example in Mamilla Jerusalem when I see arab women coming shopping there). Well, that is what I want (there is more, but no place enough). Not I stated my goals, I would be glad to detail how to implement them :-) שלום
6. dear Nour,Do you know what is Plan Z ?!!
Salma ,   Palestine   (05.26.10)
I can't believe you're precisely, not understand what I meant ;(
7. Sure there's a Plan B... - and it's a great plan!!
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (05.26.10)
We continue to avoid pursuing Plan A and end up in a situation where the only answer is a single state in Cisjordan, composed of roughly 6m Jews/Israelis and 5m Palestinians/Israeli-Arabs/Muslims/Xians. That would be just a super thing to happen, wouldn't it! Such states have a long and glorious history of working out perfectly. I mean, former Russia, former Yugoslavia, former Czechoslovakia, former Austria-Hungary, former east Pakistan, East Timor... Notice the "former." Ah, I forget: The 5m non-Jews would be expelled from that state and/or be paid to leave and/or be invited to convert to Judaism. Yes, now there's a plan that REALLY has a chance of working! Not.
8. Plan B
simon   (05.26.10)
My Vision of Peace are that it is both difficult and almost impossible to make peace in the region unless it is done with a four-state solution, where the four states is the State of Israel, the State of Palestine, the State of Jerusalem and the State of Golan Height. Why a four state solution is more effective than a two-state solution is because it is a more natural way to solve problems that emerge in a two-state solution, such as settlements, Jerusalem, the right to visit some holy places, compensation for those who suffered during the conflict and the security. www.onewaytopeace.com

11. Response to Nour
Edan ,   Tel Aviv   (05.26.10)
"This is while new fake Jews (Khazar converts, Polish "haredi"s, and Ethiopians who have absolutely nothing to do with the land are encouraged to immigrate to populate the very same land we lived on for centuries. " So you are not a racist? You believe that jews who are not from arab countries are "fake" jews? That we have no connection to this land that was called Judea long before it was called Palestine? I think the problem comes from the Palestinian people who will never allow us to live peacefully in our homeland, even though we have tried numerous times to compromise. Yes, many Israelis don't care about peace anymore or the Palestinians plight for precisely this reason. Compromise is not part of arab culture.
12. The 2 state solution is a solution because it destroys Israe
daniel   (05.26.10)
So why need a plan B?
13. Nour
Solomon ,   Bklyn   (05.26.10)
Your Arab brothers are the ones who held you in the camps under seige. Jewish refugees were taken in by their Jewish brothers. Life in the West Bank is easier as they at least speak to ISRAEL. Hamas wants ISRAEL's destruction, and yet wants to be helped by the world to achieve that goal? Come on. Most "Palestinians" arrived after the 1800's. Label a refugee as one who arrived after 1920 and not as one who was there in 1947, and there would be no refugees. And as far as racist expulsions; it was the Arabs that began pogroms, killing Jews in the 1920's 1930's well before a "Palestinian" state was ever thought of. Remember, through the 1950's when you said Palestinians you meant the Jews.
14. "One State Solution" : Jordan
Janice Cohen ,   ירושלים   (05.26.10)
15. Plan B is actually the easiest:
Ehud ,   TA   (05.26.10)
Give the Westbank back to those from whom you took it - the Jordanians. TGiven the fact that more than 70% of Jordanians are Palestinians, and the rest are Bedouin Arabs (who have relatives among Palestinians) this would form the only workable one-state solution (Jordan-Palestine). Abdallah knows it, that's why he is so concerned!
16. And yet another column that does not address the main issue
Marcella   (05.26.10)
WHY DO YOU ALLOW a small group of Israeli politicians with uncertain level of intelligence, a poor track record, and no vision at all to make decisions that will affect not only Israel, but all future generations of Jews. This is not, as Ms Livni says, a case where you elect representatives and then let them do as they please. And this is not just about land. It's much bigger than that. Israel cannot survive with the pre-1967 borders. Aren't people a little worried about this? Shouldn't they at least be demanding a referendum before that small group of people in government surrenders their heartland? We observe the PM retreat at just about every demand made by the US. And let's not fool ourselves here. The US is NOT a mediator. The US is acting as representative of the Arab side. The latest is a report that Israel may retreat from a demand for Israeli troops patrolling the future border and will consider allowing NATO troops to do that instead. What this means is that if Israel were to respond to violence from the Arab state, it would have to engage European, Canadian and American troops. The Arab/US versus Israel situation is so alarming that it is shocking how intelligent writers continue to discuss issues such as Obama, the Arabs, or even regular domestic issues, while they avert their eyes from the Jumbo Elephant in the room: the Israeli government itself which is participating in the partition of the country leading to an unsustainable security situation. And it's not only columnists at fault here. It's every thinking Israeli, including professors, historians, journalists, activists, jurists - PEOPLE WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER - people who have the knowledge, the eloquence and the influence to make a difference NOW, before Israel falls. A new Holocaust is being prepared right before our eyes. In stages, just like the previous one. They are softening up the target: Weakening Israel. Demonizing Israel and the Jews. Partitioning the country. And they are doing nothing about the rise of an Islamic superpower in the region that proclaims its intention to destroy Israel. And doing nothing about the "peace partners" own indoctrination against Israel. And quite openly, arming Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other "moderate" countries, while arming and training Israel's "peace partners". Every Israeli over the age of ten can see a pattern here. And still writers, politicians, anyone who could make a difference, continue to argue about ordinary issues or to divert everyone's attention from the real culprit: an Israeli government that is participating in this plan to destroy Israel while the population allows them to do so. And by the way - there has always been an alternative to Two States: ANNEXATION. Israel has the right to the land, (as per international law and agreements) but everyone keeps silent about this too. Mr Dann, there is no time to trust a "UN Coordinator's Office" or some other official to do the job that Israeli Jews should be doing. Israel has just weeks, months at best, before an agreement is forced on Israel. Only the people can stop it. Beginning with the same ones who have been writing reports, studies, and columns for years. They have the knowledge and the influence to lead. If only a dozen of you were to challenge the government with one voice, regardless of political differences, it could start something very important: a movement with citizens taking responsibility for what happens to their country and to the Jewish people. It's time for action. If the "unthinkable" happens, historians will wonder how Jews could so willingly walk into a second Holocaust. They were not so smart, after all.
17. Intellectual dishonesty and Israel
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (05.26.10)
I can't quite figure out why there is so much dishonesty about this question. There are only three potential solutions: 1) A two-state solition; 2) a one-state solution or 3) a mass expulsion or genocide committed against the Palestinians. Israel has major problems with all three solutions and therefore has refused all three. And therefore, like the writer, tries to pretend there is a fourth solution (somewhere in the ether) while anyone examining the problem recognizes the reality for what it is. If Israel opts for the two-state solution, borders along with land and water rights must be enforced by the state. A civil insurrection fomented by the settlers and their supporters would be inevitable. But with the continued settlement policy, the chances of this option are receding, if it is possible at all. For the land is finite and Jewish greed for this land seems infinite. The one-state solution would presuppose 'equal rights and responsibilities' for all irrespective of religious or ethnic background. This would drive a stake through the idea of a 'Jewish' state. And civil strife anong Jews would again be inevitable. For, the Jewish citizens of Israel do not want equality, they wish to be superior, otherwise there is no reason for a state built upon racial and religious discrimination. The final option will lead to an all out regional war, with the potential dor instigating WWIII. Only Israeli diehards see this as a viable option. Nobody else in the world will countenance this option. Therefore, if further stalling in the hope of a 'magical' solution is not viable, and the tthree options stated above are unpalatable, where do you go from here? Unfortunately, the answer in Israel has become to stall for time and suppress all intellectual honesty. In the short term, this may appear to work, but the problem will still exist and fester, and Israel will continue down its road to becoming a totalitarian state.

20. What is the collective myth called "Palestine"?
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (05.26.10)
What binds Jews from eastern Euyrope, Ethiopia and North Africa and the Mideast are our collective myths as revealed in the Torah and in subsequent events such as Rabbi Lowe's creation of the Golem in Prague and so on right up until the tragedy of the Holocaust and the establishment of the state of Israel. While Palestinians did live on the land of what is now known as Eretz Yisrael, they were a heterogenous people who came from many different lands and cultures such as Syria, Egypt, Greece, Afghanistan and Kurdistan (see Benny Morris's first chapter of "The Palestinian Refugees -- Revisited"). Most were, or became Muslims but many were also Christians. Eventually, over the years, they all became Arabic speaking. While there arose quasi bureaurocracies in the 1930s and 1940s which loosely governed the people of the region called "Palestine" by the Turks while it was still in their hands (until 1914), no distinct Palestinian culture nor widespread identification with the land as a collective arose until after the Naqba. That was in 1947-48. In essence, the myth of a Palestinian collective (as opposed to an Arabic one) arose as a matter of exile and hoped for return. Since then, the need for and belief in the establishment of a nation called Palestine has gradually grown. Without the founding myths, no collective can weather the debacles of time and survive. The Jewish myths are extraordinarily strong and, as a result, have bound us together in a unique pattern of survival and rebirth which no other nation can lay claim to. The Palestinians may or may not found a nation state. It is yet to be seen whether their collective myth is strong enough to afford them survival and help them thrive.

22. To: No. 4
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.26.10)
Kind of forgot to mention six wars, all started by Arabs and won by Israel. Kind of overlooked sixty-two plus years of unrelenting terror. Kind of deliberately glossed over three rejected opportuhnities for a two-state solution. You say nothing about those charters of some thirty-odd Palestinian organizations which continue to call for the destruction of the State of Israel and the extermination and/or expulsion of the Jewish people. Do you understand why we are so sick to death of you? You are the architects of your own plight. Why on earth should I feel sorry for you?
23. palestinians

GOD gave the land to his people the jews. The land belongs to them.Besides you move all of israel to Teaxas and the paestinians would want that land as well. They dont wont a land beside Israel they instead of Israel. All they want is to destroy Israel. GOD brought them back to their land. They cant be taken out of the land. they cant be destroyed. GOD promised them this and he keeps his promises.Better leave this one along.

If you believe your own words, then you are in fact an unwitting accomplice to the "intellectual dishonesty" you are talking about. The two state solution has already been offered by Israel, more than once, and it has been rejected in every form. It has been presented in various forms by Israel, and the UN, and brokered by US Presidents on more than one occasion. The reason it gets dismissed out of hand by the "Palestinians" is because "Two States" is NOT the goal of the Arabs. Their goal is the destruction of the Jewish State. It is an outright lie to deny or evade this simple fact. Have even read the Oslo accords? Have you ever in your life even heard the phrase "The Three No's"? Do you know who the "Palestinians" are, or when/where they came from? Or how many Jews were refugees evicted from Arab lands? These things are not published in American media, AND THAT IS WHY there is so much intellectual dishonesty. The one state solution is NOT a solution because it ends the Jewish state. PERIOD. There is no equivocation here. The Arabs have 22 countries and Muslims have more than 1,000 times the land. LET THE JEWS HAVE A STATE. Let the facts stand: Arabs already have 22 states. If you support a one state solution then you are saying the Arabs should have 23, and the Jews should have none. What is so hard to understand about that? It is NOT exaggeration, it is FACT. The rest of the world has been deluded into believing Israel can survive as a Jewish nation under the One State plan, but this is absolutely NOT true. It is a lie and a delusion and the world must stop denying it or it WILL result in a tragic and sweeping armed conflict with millions of dead across the entire region. Mark my words. Keep pushing this “One State” thing and you will see bodies, fires, destruction, and horror as your reward for loving a lie because it suits your purpose. I have two solutions also. The first is to abandon "political correctness". It is not just "revisionary" it is LIE. By abandoning PC we will be free to talk about equity and fairness. We could openly discuss who we are talking about, and *where* exactly they belong. If we did that, and it was common knowledge across the globe, the solution would be obvious. I call this Plan "J". The other solution is for Israel to abandon all hope of the world overcoming it's collective ignorance and simply evicting every single person that is opposed to the Jewish state. This is called Plan “I”.
27. The only possible solution
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (05.27.10)
The Arabs already own 99.93% of Middle East - this 0.07% is ours and no we refuse to surrender it to a bunch of people that want to kill us. The eastern part of the original mandate was given to the Arabs that is a 78% of the total land. That is theirs to do whatever they want. We keep our small part.
28. Annex Judea and Samaria. Pay Arabs to leave.
Chaim   (05.27.10)
One merely has to look at a map to know the Two State Final Solution would destroy Israel within a decade. Israel must reject it in the strongest words and actions. The solution is simple. Annex Judea and Samaria. Pay Arabs to leave. Arabs are already permanently leaving Judea and Samaria by the tens of thousands annually. We need merely accelerate this favorable trend by offering suitable compensation for many more Arabs to leave our land.
29. The One State Solution
Marcella   (05.27.10)
While I agree on the dangers of the One State Solution, at least it offers some hope for being in control of the situation. We should consider the following points: - The Two State Solution leaves Israel reduced to an indefensible size. Furthermore, the idea is for the PA and Gaza to eventually merge, which will require a land corridor between Ramallah and Gaza - dividing Israel in two. This was agreed on in principle during the Olmert administration and I don't think it has changed since. How do you defend a territory nine miles wide, I believe, split in two, with the enemy within sight of your cities and airport? - The Jordanian solution, with Jordan retaking Judea and Samaria does not solve anything. The majority of Jordan is already Palestinian. With or without the West Bank, it's only a matter of time before Jordan finds itself under a more direct influence by extremists. - A purely Jewish state is unrealistic - at the moment. I agree with past commentators who have point out that since nobody has a problem with the existence of "United Arab Republic", "Arab Republic of Yemen", "Arab Republic of Egypt", "Islamic Republic of Iran", etc., why is the idea of a Jewish state so distasteful to them?. - The problem right now is that Israel is too isolated and would not be allowed to do anything that smacks of discrimination against the Arab population. So the choice is one of an undefensible tiny piece of territory or a larger one but with a lot of Arabs in it. - However, reliable demographic studies show that the number of Arabs in the PA has been exaggerated. It's part of a manipulative leftist and Arab fear-mongering campaign. - If Israel annexes the territories, it is in control and more able to obtain intelligence and to prevent violence. Notice how world condemnation focuses on Israel's response to Gaza violence - demonstrating how loss of military and political control leads to an escalation of both Arab terror and world hatred against Israel for defending itself. - If Israel were to annex the territories, it could offer immediate residency and equal rights to the Arabs, provided they accept them. And it could promise future citizenship to Arabs who qualify - that is those who do not have a criminal record. Furthermore, it could offer substancial financial assistance for Arabs interested in migrating to other countries. - If Israel were to annex the territories, Aliya would soar. Right now many in the Diaspora feel uncertain about moving to a country that may find itself flooded with Jewish refugees from the territories, or under siege from an enemy that would be only meters away from their population centers. - The idea of removing Arabs by force is not only illegal but completely unrealistic. Israel does not even dare to remove illegal Africans who infiltrate by the hundreds every year. - You have to work with what you have. You just don't have the proper mindset in Israel to do anything that might upset the UN or the anti-Semitic world community in general. Annexing the land would be extremely upsetting to them, but at least Israel has the legal right to do so - and the necessary documentation to prove it (United Nations Charter that binds them to previous League of Nations Mandate Agreement regarding Israel's borders).
30. The one state soluion
Avi ,   NYC, USA   (05.27.10)
The one state solution is the only logical solution. There is a solid Arab majority west of the Jordan river. 75% of the residents of this area are Arab (Muslims, Christian, Druze or Jewish. Yes, I consider Jews from Arab countries as Arabs of the Jewish faith.)
