Syrians say: Eli was discovered during a routine surveillance patrol in Damascus. Egyptian say: we tipped off Syrians about Eli after an Egyptian officer very well acquainted to Eli met him in person during a meeting with fellow Syrian army officers. Eli was earlier detained in Egypt over a Jewish arson operation, but was released as "good will gesture"! both parties my be credible, but the sure thing is Eli was a grand liar in that interview.

We need to bring this hero of Israel home. If it costs the lives of each and every Syrian man, woman and child to achieve this, it will still be worthwhile. Rest in peace, Eli Cohen. Rest in peace. We haven't forgotten you. We never will.

it began when the indian embassy in damascus syria had hard time transmitting coded information back to india at certain hours of the day,so they complained to syrian authorities to look into it,syria asked the soviet union to help, soviets found wires dangling from the roof and leads to Eli Cohens apartment, Eli was arrested his picture was on syrians front page, egyptian intteligence provided the syrians background file of Eli when he was living in egypt and his involvement with the LAVON affair and the rest is history
13. Cohen & Al-Gammal, both were Egyptians
observer   (05.30.10)
Eli Cohen, the Egyptian Jew whose family prospered in Egypt was jaild in Cairo over Lavon conspiracy targeting the American cultural centers in Cairo and Alexandria. He was released in good well gesture to the Jews; Egypt was then hoding the belief that "not all Jews are Zionists" Later, in spite of Egyptian kind generosity, he cam back to Egypt with more conspiracies. Failed to achieve terror gains, was recruited in Syria and caught IN ACTION in Damascus. Refaat Al-Gammal or Jack Beton was an Egyptian spy who spent 17 years performing clandestine operations in Israel. Refaat Al-Gammal joined the Lavon affair with Eli Cohen, an Israeli spy who almost reached a very subtle government position in Syria. But, Al-Gammal survived the work of the 1973 war.

15. the Mossad refused to draft Cohen
observer   (05.31.10)
Even after the blown operation led to the demise of the Operation Susannah spies, Eli Cohen left Egypt for Israel in order to undergo intensive espionage training in the summer of 1955. He even trained at the same facility "that had served as home to his doomed Susannah compatriots in 1953." Eli Cohen, at 29, offered his services to the Israeli Intelligence Services but was rebuked twice. He wasn't even drafted into regular service, but was "placed in a reserve Israeli Air Force formation as a logistics clerk.". http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Eli_Cohen.html for the first time Israel celebrates Martyre Cohen and Egypt celebrates Hero Al-Gammal. blackmailing a Israeli Spy; One day in 1960 Israeli Intelligence approached him about working for them again. At first he refused. But within a month he had lost his Tel Aviv-based accountancy job. When Intelligence came by a second time, he jumped at it. "don't tell me that the Mossad wasn't the one behind Cohen's dismissal from his Job."
16. Eli Cohen
Souri ,   Damascus, Syria   (06.02.10)
I remember seeing Cohen hanged in damascus for 2 days like a dirty killer heyna (with all respect to poor heynas). The judge still lives in syria who ordered the hanging. Eli was defiant but knew his fate. It was electrical outage in damascus upper neighbourhood that exposed Eli. Power was out, but the intellegence was picking a signal still. They went and caught him. He hid his equipement underground in his office. The rest is history.
17. Eli Cohen
Michael ,   Plantation, FL   (06.29.10)
Souri (#16), for the past 5 years I have been researching the case of Eli Cohen, reading everything about him; his life and death and seeing his body swaying in the wind in Damascus on the morning of his death (Youtube). This past May 17 (2010) at about 8:30 PM a few Jewish friends and I met in private to pray for the return of Eli's remains to his family in Israel. It has been 45 years too long. I have a feeling that his remains will not be returned until the Golan Heights are returned to Syria. That will be a high price to pay. Eli Cohen gave his life for his people and his country. I am only saddened that he had but one life to give. May his soul rest in peace.
