This time, the caption under the photograph quite accurately describes the problem....
2. Afraid of losing their monopoly and power
JO   (05.31.10)
these rules show fear and are neither just or fair. Why do they target Jews who marry abroad ( not with the rabbinate)? As to conversion this is precisely the reason why people of Jewish heritage do not convert, though they may want to , these rules stop you even thinking about it. It is impossible. The rabbinate is going backwards.
3. presumed not jewish?
moron ,   galut   (05.31.10)
what can left expect with it's activities for gay marriage abd the like--of couse this is all insane but blame also jews perverting halacha to include their liberal politics
4. They can't summon you...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.31.10)
Rivkah Lubitch takes her panic to a new level. Anyone familiar with the operations of the regional Rabbinical Courts knows that one cannot receive a summons to appear before the court. Any case being heard to decide whether or not one is a Jew is an elective process in which the person in question requests a hearing and presents himself/herself. No one can be summoned to a hearing regarding their Jewish status unless he/she requested such a summons.

exactly what I was thinking about.
6. Non-Jewish, until proven otherwise
YZ ,   Belgium   (05.31.10)
HI Rivkah: you are totally right to write: "the entire nation of Israel is presumed to be Not-Jewish – until proven otherwise". THIS IS A SHAME and INTOLLERABLE. You mention a list of Diaspora rabbis recognized by the Chief Rabbinate; is this list available online ? Where can I find this list ? Thanks
7. Non-Jewish, until proven otherwise
Yves ,   Belgium   (05.31.10)
In fact I ment by "You are totally right to write", that you are right by coming to that conclusion based on what is happening. It is a shame that the entire nation of Israel is presumed to be Not-Jewish – until proven otherwise !!!!
8. the messiah
cristian ,   arg   (06.01.10)
at this time there appeared Jesus a wise man for he was a doer of startling deeds a teacher of the people who received the truth with pleasure and he gained a following both among many jews and among many of greek origin and when pilate because of an accusation made by the leading men among us condemned him to the cross those who had loved him previously did not cease to do so and up until this very day the tribe of christians named after him has not died out,the roman governor festus was now dead and his successor albinus was still upon the road so the high priest ananus assembled the sanhedrin of judges and brought before them the brother of that Jesus who was called christ whose name was james and some of his companions and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law he delivered them to be stoned (flavious josephus, jewish antiquities)
9. SO MANY LIKE RIVKAH KEEPS ME IN BROOKLYN AND SAFE
...........DACON9   (06.01.10)
SO MANY LIKE RIVKAH KEEPS ME IN BROOKLYN AND SAFE AS A JEW RIVKAH YOU 'VE BEEN WEARING THAT REDICULOUS HAT FOR 2 YEARS AT LEAST AND YOUR NOT EVEN A PRACTICING JEW BY UNIVERSAL TORAH STANDARDS YOU ARE MORE LIKE A RECONSTRUCTIONIST BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO RECONSTRUCT THE WAYS FOR A FEW THOUSAND YEARS PRACTICED. WHEN WILL YOU OPEN YOUR CHURCH? WILL YOU HIRE PAUL? OR RINGO? NEVER MIND, DONT EVEN ANSWER DACON9
10. Remember the "Gierim"...
Ynet web reader ,   Niles, IL, USA   (06.01.10)
...the Holy Sparks need to convert lest we must return...agree w/#6 how do we find the list?
11. non-jewish until proven otherwise
Yehudit ,   USA   (06.01.10)
unfortunately, we need these drastic measures now, because of the mess of the state policies to allow in hundreds of thousands immigrants from the former ussr, and from other countries, as well as those who married via the Reform, who claimed to be jews, or were married to jews but in essence are gentiles. The law of "Mi Hu Yehudi K'HALACHA" was never implemented.
12. GOTTA GIVE THE CREDIT TO AUTHOR ANYWAY
.......DACON9   (06.01.10)
SHE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT POSTS MY SARCASM..... ARUTZ SHEVA DOESNT LIKE 'MY' TRUTH AND EXPOSING THEIR HYPOCRACIES..is this how you spell it? and YNET DOESNT LIKE ME TO MENTIONS GDS LAWS PERTAINING TO SEPARATION ,NOT INTERGRATION BETWEEN JEWS AND GOYEEM. even in a 'house article about same. SO I GUESS IF I WANT TO RANT I SHOULD GET MARRIED AGAIN.. THERE IS NO ONE THAT WANTS TO LISTEN TO ME ANYMORE.. THE SAME WAY THAT NOT MANY JEWS IN ISRAEL WANT TO LISTEN TO HASHEM AND THE LAWS OF MOSES.... THIS IS WHY ISRAEL THE PEOPLE ARE GETTING TESTING BY THE HEAVENS..THIS CAN BE INTERPRETED AS A GENTLE HEAVENLY SLAP OR THE BEGININGS OF THE WRATH OF HASHEM FOR TURNING FROM ''HIM'' EXAMINE THE EVENTS TO ISRAEL AND THE WORLD AND ARRIVE AT YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS... I THINK THAT THIS AUTHOR SHOULD PLEAD TO HASHEMS HEAVENLY COURT more then this corrupt goverments court
13. Well, I guess my tax money is good...

...even if I am unable to prove myself a member of the chosen. So it's okay if I get a job at a shopping center on Saturdays?
14. The US consulate can also retroactively revoke citizenship
Shachar Haamim ,   Upper El Khader, PL   (06.01.10)
A US citizen married to a foreigner has to prove certain residency requirements in order to pass citizenship onto his/her children. It used to be that if a first child passed this test, then the citizenship papers of the first would be enough to grant citizenship to all subsequent children. Then the state department changed the rules and parents had to bring in all of the paperwork once again for subsequent children - and earlier children became susceptible to losing their US citizenship. Is this a conspiracy too?
15. recognize civil marraige
avramele   (06.01.10)
A civil marraige law is the simple and fair solution for all who wish to bypass the rabbinate or clergy of any religion. Jews, however they self define themselves, can then perform kedushim ceremonies according to their own customs and with their Jew of choice officiating in the presence of a state representative... or they can opt for a ceremony of their choosing in the presence of a secular representative of the state. And when the halachically inclined wish to marry they can investigate the Jewishness of their future spouse privately by their standards or for a fee by the state rabbinate. simple, fair and workable.
16. This is absurd.
Susan ,   Kfar Saba   (06.02.10)
This is the most horrible and cruel thing I have ever seen. As Jews we have always know who we are. Having said that, I have been collecting proof. I have my ketuba, I am trying to get my parent's ketuba, I have pictures of the graves of my mother, her mother, and her parents. I have copies of death and marriage certificates. Although these are secular documents, they show who was married to whom and where they are buried. Unfortunately, I can't think of any other solution for now. We modern orthodox Jews are to blame for not voting National Religious Party in enough numbers so that they can control local rabbinates.
17. Sounds great to me.
Real Jew ,   Betar Ilit, Israel   (06.02.10)
If someone cannot reasonably prove they are Jewish, there is a good chance they are not. There are too many unhalachic institutions parading as if they are legitimate, speaking in the name of Torah to spread apikorsus. Maybe it is better for them to announce that they are indeed apikorsim and really do not want a connection with the GD of Israel and the real Jewish people.
18. #16,NO SUCH THING AS MODERN ORTHODOX JEW
.......DACON9   (06.03.10)
YOU ARE A JEW OR NOT. PRACTICING AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF OBSERVANCE UNDER ONE SET OF LAWS THAT GD HANDED DOWN TO MOSES MOSHE RABBEINU. USING LABLES DOES NOT ABSOLVE YOU OF ANY TRANSGRESSIONS YOU MAY MAKE A SO CALLED JEW THAT labels himself secualr is responsible for breaking the same laws as a more observant.... ....especially in this day and age with all manners of education such as the ineternet rabbis online... so therefore they no longer can hide under the veil of a kidnapped lost JEW that had no opportunnity to learn. THEY ARE SIMPLY refusing to learn or follow judaism. they find comfort in a ham sandwich.... DACON9 EMAIL:jewswithviews@gmail.com
19. proof of Chief Rabbis' Jewishness?
Yehudha ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.07.10)
I want the Chief Rabbis to prove their Jewishness with hard evidence. Then we'll talk.
20. Conclusion?
Lia ,   Israel   (07.16.10)
The author's conclusion: "If this isn’t the time to establish alternative rabbinic courts – when will the time come?" is absurd! This isn't the time for alternative rabbinic courts or rabbinic courts of any kind. Sane, secular Israelis want a secular marriage authority and to finally sever all ties between Knesset and Beit Knesset (separation of religion and state).
21. new designation
Robert ,   NYC, USA   (07.16.10)
Maybe we need a new designation of "Glatt Jew" for the Haredim and leave the rest of us in peace. It's not bad enough that we are drastically outnumbered by the populations of other faiths? Must we thin our ranks further?
22. Basis for their de-judaification
P ,   USA   (07.16.10)
People are only seeing two sides and picking at one out of them; people who identify as Jews, or want to identify as Jews - who risk SOMEONE ELSE authoratively rendering them not Jewish. But there are other sides! For ex, what if OTD adults or youth, proactively SEEK the removal of their Jewish status? I've never seen anyone raise the prospect, and it doesn't seem at all unlikely that someone go to the these rabbis in the rabbinut and claim they should not be considered Jewish based on the standards of these authorities who are gaining authority. Think of the tempation for someone with weakening communal identity, doubts and temptations, but who is not a denier per se (how many do MANY know like this?...) - not only could they be frei, but frei *and not chayav for ANY of it but sheva mitzvot, if even then* - even if they believe Judaism is right and correct. "It's believe it's true - but does not apply to me".
23. This is why....
Dr. Stan Seidner ,   Jerusalem/ Austin   (07.16.10)
The Haredi may cause Israel to fall with a whimper from within...rather than from the threat of a blast from without.
24. What are you talking about?
batya ,   Galus   (07.16.10)
Let's get one thing straight. As much as we have a political and even moral right to be in Eretz Yisrael, we have no religious right to be there (unless I missed something and Moshiach is here already?) Ben Gurion tried that at the UN and it didn't end well. A lot of the ultra-orthodox are against zionism in the first place. And so now they want to turn this state into their pet religious project? Who cares WHAT the left is doing in Israel, whether they are perverting halacha, it's a democratic, political, pluralist country. Besides, is perversion of halacha reason to say someone isn't a Jew? Last time I learned Torah (last night) it wasn't. If the religious right want to have a country on their terms, they are going to have to wait a little bit longer for Mashiach. Isn't it enough that they sit around all day, don't work, and freeload off of the rest of us? They already have it pretty darn good, no sense in ruining it for the rest of Am Yisrael.
25. This is Ridiculous
Yehuda ,   Los Angeles, CA   (07.17.10)
As a person currently in the process of conversion in America, I find this quite ridiculous. It's sad that Israel is putting so much focus on this issue when there are so many other issues they are overlooking. Israel is trying to do too much in it's years. Israel is separating not only Israel but the Jewish Diaspora is being affected. I can't sit around with the idea of one or even 10 Haredim being able to choose if thousands of people are considered Jews. It's not fair, it's not right and it's ridiculous. For Israel to recover from this, Israel needs to take some tips from it's founders who felt Religion and Politics should be separate. Israel should be proud to be a Jewish country, but for not only this problem but Israel's other problems to be solved, this issue needs to be looked at closer!
26. LOL -I might be upset if this only effected me...
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.03.10)
...but since we're all in the same boat, who cares? It's about time we make these so called rabbis prove their Jewishness to us for a change, don't you think? (eye for an eye ;^) It shouldn't be too hard, these rabbis dress like they live in 17th century Poland after all.
