The protesters knew they weren't going to make it to Gaza, so they pull this publicity stunt to grab attention and make Israel look bad. Israel knew there would be a confrontation, so rather than play into their hands and have it occur in daytime they boarded the ship and ended the nonsense under the cover of night. They could not avoid the inevitable, but who knows if there would have been more or less casualties (on either side) if this had happened during the day. The camera crews must be disappointed they could not have this during prime time. What a waste of effort!

What did they expect? Despite their claims of "humanitarian" aid, the flotilla may very likely be carrying more arms and weapons for Hamas to use to attack Israeli civilians. When Gilad Shalit was kidnapped, Hamas dug a tunnel under the Israeli border and blew up an army post on the Israeli side, killing two Israelis and then capturing Shalit. So is today's response simply the totally legal and legitimate exercise of "proportionate response" that the international community demands from Israel? Actually, to make it proportionate we'll have to hold one or more of the "protesters" prisoner, but not tell anybody where they are, and not allow any visits - although in a year we'll let them write a letter, and in 2 or 3 years we'll take a video of them. Israel delivers TONS of food and medical supplies on a daily basis (what most people might call "humanitarian aid", but when delivered by Israel, it is non-existent for some strange reason).
