Hamas is a recognized terrorist organization, the de facto government in Gaza, and highly belligerent to Israel. Is Israel entitled to take efforts to ensure that Hamas is not supplied with arms and other materials which can be used for terrorism? If the answer is no, then the person is denying Israel the right of self-defense. That is the end of the conversation -- Israel is denied the right granted to every other nation on earth. 2. Assuming the answer to No. 1 is yes, what should Israel do differently than it is doing -- a blockade which allows humanitarian aid in but keeps contraband out? What alternatives does the person propose that would allow Israel to exercise its right of self defense? One important point which seems to be lost in all the discussion is that all of the persons killed were on one ship -- five out of the six ships in the flottila surrendered peacefully with nary a hair on anyone's head touched. That is precisely how a blockade of this sort is supposed to work -- you run up the white flag, surrender peacefully, and after the cargo is inspected, then all non-contraband is allowed to go forward. The persons on the sixth ship were armed and looking for trouble. (There were also reports that they attacked the Israel soldiers AFTER running up a white flag. That is a separate act of perfidy -- a white flag is supposed to mean peaceful surrender.) If you set out to ram through an announced naval blockade through violence, what does one expect to happen?
