Unfortunately, she will undoubtedly try to resurrect her image through talk show appearances (probably starting with MSNBC, CNN, & "The View"). Dan Rather did the same, after trumpeting the forged GW Bush Air Force letters on CBS. At least the more insane underlying opinions of "journalists" are starting to become clear, so they can be flushed out, & the mainstream media rebuild itself. I sincerely hope that Journalism will start to become (or return to being) a profession, with clear ethics & standards, a clear differentiation between reporting (objective facts), analysis (factual, comprehensive, objective analysis), & opinion. Much like Financial Services (which was previously a "selling", not advisory profession), it needs to develop much further, & get away from either being a trumpet for the rich & powerful, or a crusading socio/political policy advocate disguised as a reporter. Personally, I hope her next dictation machine is a gin bottle, & she disappears into obscurity ASAP.

Actually, it is not free speech at all. It is considered hate speech, and as such does not enjoy constitutional protection under the First Amendment. You are correct in pointing out that anti-Semitism is not illegal. It is, however, widely considered to be reprehensible. That said, I trust you DO realize that it is not illegal to have negative feelings towards Arabs and Moslems. No shortage of people with those sentiments, I assure you. Most of them don't worry about the reprehensible part, either. They are of the opinion that blowing up two United States embassies, the U.S.S. COLE and flying airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon is pretty reprehensible.

Lack of tolerance? Are you serious? Here in the United States -- where Ms. Thomas voiced her obnoxious comments -- you can have whatever opinion you want. About anything. But if you voice those opinions, then you have to suffer the consequences and the fallout. Not all speech is protected. You cannot, for instance -- to use Chief Justice Holmes' famous example -- shout "Fire!" in a crowded theatre if there is no fire. That is not free exercise of speech; that is license. Nor is slander protected speech. Hate speech -- which is what Ms. Thomas is guilty of -- has no constitutional protection either. The outrage in the United States at the complete inappropriateness of Ms. Thomas' comments and the sheer vile nature of her invective was not limited to Jews. In fact, the outrage was far more considerable among non-Jews. It is a shame that her very long career should end on such a note. This is what she will be remembered for. She should have kept her opinions to herself.
