1. Are Leftists a Tribe?
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.19.10)
Quite truthfully, there are only two tribes in Israel - Leftists & Everyone Else.
2. Leftist "peace" radical holds little weight
Steve   (06.19.10)
When the media comes forward with a reasonble, thoughtful conservative, I will listen. A radical-leftist Peace-NOW activist like Burg has no credibility, even if some of what he says is true.
3. Ah, very intelligent, Burg! [ironic]
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim,   (06.19.10)
4. burg
nossen tzvi ,   jerusalem   (06.19.10)
people in this country are not all that impressed with burg. perhaps he can write more op ed articles for the french press. if not that he always can join the neturei karta in their efforts to make israel look bad in the eyes of the world. but then again, the hareidim don't spy for our enemies.
5. I think :)
Yossef ,   Rehovot, Israel   (06.19.10)
that the Haredim are not part of the jewish people. They are like christian 2000 years ago, they remove themselves from the people of Israel.
6. and the haredim would agree with burg
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (06.19.10)
except for the fact that the haredim would be in BIG trouble if the state ceased their handouts. we see who needs whom in this equation.
7. Victory!
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (06.19.10)
"The haredim are not part of the State of Israel" Now they do not have to do the army, and pay taxes. Thank you, Mr. Burg!
8. Mr. Burg is correct. He times the breaking
Robert Haymond ,   Israel é Canada   (06.19.10)
point as now, after the `declaration of war`on the part of the Charedim against the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Education. Let`s take into account as well the independence and lack of integration of the Arab population, the leftist (aka `peacemakers``) revolt against the government and IDF and the Religious Zionists in Shomrun and Judea and you have a society breaking apart internally while our external neighbours threaten and the international community unwinds us. Our penchant for freedom in Israel has developed into anarchy.
9. A VERY significant statement from a VERY significant person
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (06.19.10)
10. Burg: Is there any difference between you and the Haredi?
Steve ,   Tel Aviv   (06.19.10)
God help us from the left and the right. Both seem to express the same inane comments about each other. How stupid a comment by Burg: this is the real Jerusalem. So that means if we do not agree with his perception of truth we all are screwed by god? Help us from our insanity and give us the strength to find some wise men/women to lead us.
11. Thank the Haredim for a Jewish majority
Secular Jew   (06.19.10)
While Haredim keep making babies, the seculars keep having abortions (more than 50 thousand a year!). If it were not for the prolific religious Jews, Israel would commit demographic suicide. Enough already of the constant beating of the Haredim. Sure I don't like a lot of things about them and their lifestyle. But this campaign against them is just sick. Reserve your indignation for those who want to slaughter you. Enough already! And by the way. Some months ago the High Court ordered the eviction of some Arab squatters who were occupying a Jewish owned building in Jerusalem. And guess what? The police refused to obey the Court order. They gave all kinds of excuses and I think that the building is still being illegally occupied. Did anyone blew into a rage at the police's defiance of a court order? Did anyone order their imprisonment? I don't think so.
12.  the kipah wearing treifus eating Burg not part

13. Leftists = the TRAITOR TRIBE!
Burg = radical lefty   (06.19.10)
14. Stop confusing Nation with State
Adamush   (06.19.10)
The Nation is a powerful collective that protects us, the State is an evil entity that oppresses us.
15. the extreme left started it all...
sean ,   jerusalem   (06.19.10)
they created their own little clique that ignores everyone else and does whatever the heck they want. it's not just the haredim that are dissociating from the ruling class, but just about every segment of society in israel. in fact, it is the the ruling class that have dissociated themselves from the majority of israel, and they will soon have to accept that as fact, since they are totally incapable of dealing with reality as long as they think they still have power. but with their totally incapacity to deal with the reality that they stand alone, they are on the brink of falling. Power to the People!
16. cheap shot and low
i ,   jerusalem   (06.19.10)
Was this poorly translated from Urdu, or is the former Speaker just spewing childish nonsence? Perhaps large scale peaceful protest unnerves Leftocrats. The chareidim would sooner be part of society when the Supreme court as it is currently constructed is abolished. In a country with no constitution and a arbitrary mix of other peoples laws, we have no need of an unelected activist court. That is basically a tool of Peace Now and other blind do-gooders does not confer on it any legitimacy.
17. Reuven , you forgot ...
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.19.10)
And NOT receive any shekel , any rights , any schools , no medics , no hospitals , no mehadrin food NOTHING . OK ?
18. It's not between left and right
EM ,   Ra'anana   (06.19.10)
The article addresses a severe erosion of the rule of law by a segment of our society. Just because Burg identifies with the left which resulted in knee-jerk TB reactions by defenders of the right, does it mean the the right wing support racism as exhibited in Emanuel? The current 'right wing' government's almost total silence on the matter is pathetic.
19. #8 Robert Hammond - that's how it appears on the surface
Secular Jew   (06.19.10)
The truth is that there are only two factions: the anti-Israel (Arabs, Court, leftist media, leftists professors, anarchists, anti-Semitic non-Jews) and the pro-Israel Jews. The Haredim are really no threat to the state. They engage in a lot of theatre, and my guess is that it is deliberate. They want their people to be at odds with society so as to create an Us-Against them mentality. What the Haredim fear the most is not the Arabs but assimilation into the secular or less-Orthodox milieu. They want to be hated. They want their children to hate the others. It's a highly manipulative program to keep their children apart. The state should not get sucked into that game. On the contrary. It should reach out to them, slowly integrating them into the general society. That's one of the reasons why I oppose this war against the Haredim. The other, a more important one, is that it's immoral for the state to atttack the least dangerous sector of society while leaving the truly threatening ones untouched out of fear of another intifada or other retaliation. There is a lot of criminal activity in Israel that is being ignored. For the government to attack the Haredim is the equivalent of Erdogan attacking Israel. Politically expedient.
20. haradim
alex ,   ashkelon israel   (06.19.10)
you have french passrort and advice israeli to get anot country passport you have no right in state of israel and belong to an arab state so get out
21. Burg the YOREID
Aryeh ,   Bat Ayin   (06.19.10)
should stay in France where he can frees cheese, swill wine and play with Muslims. Thank G-d he was yoreid, chaval he does not take more of his leftist buddies with him.
22. Please Israel solve your internal problems ...
Lee ,   Manchester UK   (06.19.10)
you can't afford to be divided, but as a Zionist myself i don't like the Orthodox, they are a drain on the Israel tax payer and they hate Israel. You should put them around the borders and stop giving them handouts provided by the Israeli tax payer. I worry for you Israel - you cannot secure a future divided with enemies like you have. God bless you.

24. flagrant misrepresentation of the case by media
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (06.19.10)
Lets see some honest reporting about what is really happening.
25. Burg former corrupt official, current French citizen
Ilan ,   Ariel   (06.19.10)
He is here on a carpet bagger mission trying to get enough political support to avoid indictment for his thieving past. Given our court system it is a wise strategy.
26. Burg has more in common with neturei karta
Golan ,   Modiin   (06.20.10)
Burg has more in common with neturei karta than with any other Israeli segment. He is anti-Zionist. He goes to the world and the French in particular and blackens Israel's name. He is a failure to bridge gaps in Israeli society... Therefore he belongs with those very people he condemns.
27. I am pure Haredi and agree 1000%
(06.20.10)
He is so right in what he said. It's well taken, because at this point and time Haredim are not looking to be part of the state any more. They are ready to say good bye, but the state is NOT allowing it to happen. What do Haredin need the state for? Haredim already know that funding comes from g-d not from local politicians, Lets not deny, that what took place with the fathers mothers boys and girls babies, is exactly what happened to the Jews in Germany, nothing short of that. So why should they continue this way? Best solution is that the Haredim should have their own cities to live in, so they may continue serving G-D as its meant to be by the Holy Torah, that the Haredim received on mount Sinai close to 3000 years ago. Same time the State of Israel will be glad not to be busy with the Haredim because the state is not looking to be governed by the Torah laws that was given to the Jewish nation by G-D. Bottom line it's a good solution for every body who lives in Eretz Yisrael.
28. why unearth this most unimportant self hating jew?
israeli ,   israel   (06.20.10)
29. Do leftists go against the rule of law?
Raph.m ,   Herzliya   (06.20.10)
Do leftists refuse to comply with justice decisions? Do leftists go underground hide themselves when convicted? Do leftists refuse to send their kids to school because they don't want them to study with a certain group?
30. we were 12 tribes before, and we'll be again.
