1. Kol ha-kavod to Rav Yoseiph. Mazal tov to the couple!
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.30.10)
It's appropriate that Sepharadim, Mizrakhim and Teimanim lead the way out of the morass of the simplistic, superficial and sanctimonious.
2. What utter nonsense!
Dee ,   Tel Aviv   (06.30.10)
"Rabbis explain that if the woman becomes pregnant again within the two years that follow the birth, the mother may stop producing milk for the baby. " What does La Leche League say about this???
3. Please enlighten me on this: Are religious jews allowed to
JayZ ,   Jerusalem   (06.30.10)
be artifically inseminated by any donors who they aren't married to? Wouldn't that be equivalent to adultery?. Are religious jews allowed to premarital sex? I'm asking from a religion perspective, please enlighten me
4. to #3
Laurence ,   Israel   (06.30.10)
First of all there is no adultery given that she was not married at the time of conception. Second there is no question of premarital sex given that she didn't have sex with anyone to become pregnant. We are talking here about artificial insemination only. On top of that according to the Halacha a jewish woman has no obligation to get married.
5. Who cares what that old fool says
Avi ,   Israel   (06.30.10)
If people are stupid enough to belive what the purple glassed cult leader has to say then they need to get their heads examined. Pitty he didnt give his 7 MKs some advice berfore they stole money and ended up in jail. Get a life and learn to think for yourselves.
6. to #03 JayZ
Rabbi Ovadia ,   Jerusalem   (06.30.10)
my answer to all your questions is "YES".
7. OVADIA IS A SENILE MAN, HIS RULINGS R NONSENSICAL AT BEST !
SINGER ,   SINGAPORE   (06.30.10)
8. meshugana rabbis
mattan ,   usa   (06.30.10)
the way some people obey rabbis as if they were gods is insane. they are not profits and god does not speak through them. they should stay out of people's personal lives and just preach from the torah, perhaps motivational speeches based on the torah is more suited for them. and i am jewish, kohanim, i have ahavot israel in my heart always, and i respect traditions. rabbis are teachers, not gods. our religion has become a cult. these chief rabbis act like jesus, do they claim to be the son of god as well? if they told their follows to jump off a bridge, their followers would surely do it without asking questions. these rabbis are acting like dictators, whatever they say is the law. i dont know who is more crazy these rabbis or their followers?
9. to #3 I guess at school they teach on the birds
ghostq   (06.30.10)
and the bees, you don't have to have sex in order to get pregnant sheesh the world progressed since the 80's, you should 2.
10. Response to 2
Ofri   (06.30.10)
you are superficial don't bog yourself down with the text look at the humanity and love for human life behind the edict there was no materna or similac 3000 yrs ago. This edict was solely set down to protect the life of a newborn infant -furthermore Rav Ovadia has proved that with changing times and technology halacha can be nudged to conform with change what other religion or way of life shows compassion to this degree I feel sorry for those that show contempt for Judaism and Rav Ovadia without a basic understanding
11. He allows? Phew! well, that's OK then.
Talula ,   Israel   (06.30.10)
Stupid people following a stupid Rabbi. It's time they disconnected themselves and start taking responsibility for their own lives instead of letting this power-crazed Idiot dictate to what they can and cannot do. People have to do what they feel is right, not because some Rabbi thinks it's wrong.
12. #4 Thanks Laurence, but please help me with the following
JayZ ,   Jerusalem   (06.30.10)
Based on Halacha, premarital is allowed then? second, a woman who got artificially inseminated by a donor, whats the status of her son? Isn't he considered an illegal son, a.k.a (sorry for the term: ben z**)
13. spiritual leader Rabbi yousef
yousef ,   Palestine   (06.30.10)
wowo excellent halachaic ruling , where this halacha come from ? Is it from Ovadia yousef or from God , i wonder if he still listens to the Arabic songs of Fareed Al_Atrash or not.
14. Unwarranted attacks on Respectable Rabbi
Israeli grandma   (06.30.10)
R Yosef is giving the true Jewish approach to his decisions. Cheap attacks on religious believers who like to live within the customs of our faith are not relevant to this article. Also, anti-religious please note: Judiasm does not have "honour" issues restricting our womens' freedom and putting them in fear of their lives.
15. To #5 and #7
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.30.10)
How dare you speak such slander about the Posek Hador, the leading halachic authority of our time. Rav Ovadia is a great man with an enormous intellect. Both of you people are nothing compared to him!
16. #9 the world and I sure have progressed ever since, but
JayZ ,   Jerusalem   (06.30.10)
i think you yourself haven't. I'm asking from a religious jewish perspective, for knowledge. As for the birds and the bees, i think you are old enough now to know disengage your mind from. Should you need any real classes in sexuality, i'll be glad to help.
17. I find it ironic that guys like
John   (06.30.10)
Avi and Talula and some others on here who are radically anti-religious and know nothing about halachah, would criticize a gaon and genius of a Rabbi, like Rabbi Ovadia Yosef shlit"a for his brilliant ruling. LOL! Regarding your silly comments, King Solomon says it well in Proverbs (10:19) A fool display his foolishness by the words he speaks.
18. #12 JayZ
John   (06.30.10)
He might be considered an illegal child but he's not a mamzar who may never marry a Jew.
19. Greatest Rabbi Since Akiva ben Yoseph-Proof Below
Seth ,   Washington, DC   (06.30.10)
Associated Press - January 11, 1998 - Web posted at: 2:16 p.m. EST (1916 GMT) JERUSALEM (AP) -- A leading ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Israel has ruled that it is permitted to pick your nose on the Jewish Sabbath, his aide said Sunday. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef delivered the ruling Saturday night in a sermon relayed by satellite to his followers in Israel and abroad. The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot had reported that Yosef had said nose-picking is forbidden because tiny hairs inside the nostrils might also be pulled out. But a viewing of a videotape of the event confirmed that Yosef had in fact ruled it was permitted. Yosef is among a select group of rabbis who respond to questions from Jews -- serious or otherwise -- on the minutiae of applying Jewish law to daily life. The Iraqi-born Yosef, a former chief rabbi in Egypt and Israel and a leading authority on Jewish law, is spiritual leader of the religious political party Shas, which has 10 seats in Israel's Parliament.

JDE ,   Boston, USA   (06.30.10)
Don't worry, people, you can console yourselves with the knowledge that soon, we'll be in Gehinnon, and you'll be in Gan Eden pointing and laughing. That should calm you down.
22. reply to #2
observer   (06.30.10)
Who care what La Leche say? This ruling derives from thousands of years of observations. Or as scientists would call them: anecdotal evidence. BTW how many kids have you had? In haredi circles about 10 is the norm. That makes for an awful lot of practical experience in a very short time.
23. to #21 hahaha you sound like "the waterboy"'s mother
ghostq   (06.30.10)
fussball is the devil... oh Adam Sandlar would love that :P
24. HaRav
mark ,   israel   (06.30.10)
Anybody acquainted with HaRav Yosef's piskei halacha will find them Torah based, logical, enlightened and compassionate. It is with genuine regret that I say that many of the TB's are lacking in all those qualities and say infinitely more about their authors than about this Godel haDor
25. Lactation
Susan ,   Raanana, Israel   (06.30.10)
As a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, let me set the issue straight. In many countries it is still the norm to breast feed two or more years. I am sure in Biblical times, it was also common. In Israel today, it is recommended to fully breast feed for aprox the first half of the baby's life and then add solid foods. A baby is not exclusively breast fed till age 2. Even if the mother were to become pregnant (rare if she was fully nursing,) she would still be able to nurse and would still have milk. It is called tandem nursing. Even before formulas were invented, women used the service of wet nurses - so all of this is nonsense.
26. lactation
Mark ,   israel   (06.30.10)
Susan # 25. How does one calculate the first half of a baby's life other than Heaven forbid, post mortem.? As a grandfather of long standing I have lived through as many 'fashions' regarding lactation as I have grandchildren, may they all prosper in good health, all of them scientifically 'proven correct' with lashings of Fanaigle's Constant to jockey them along. So, Susan whence the authority with which you speak, with a singular lack of humility I might add, and why should I accept what you say as gospel, your certificate in mammalian lactation, notwithstanding
27. # 3 Guy Zich
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.30.10)
yes Artificial insemination is permitted because you can't commit adultery with a needle, premarital sex is forbidden,if the child is a girl the only restriction she may face is not to marry a cohen, but if the child is a boy he may have a great future, even become a God, like the other Jewish litlle boy whose father is unnown.
28. To #5, #7 and #11
Besalel ,   Great Neck, NY   (07.01.10)
Thank you for displaying your hatred for our Sefaradi customs and leaders with such great clarity. Next time, when Shas get 15 seats in the Knesset and every Sefaradi, religious, non religious and everything in between votes Shas you can feel safe knowing that it is people like YOU that drive us to vote Shas.
29. #26
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (07.01.10)
"why should I accept what you say as gospel, your certificate in mammalian lactation, notwithstanding " Because her knowledge comes from education and experience, not from a doddering old man who refuses to consider any opinion that that doesn't come out of a 500 year-old book.
30. 5 & 7 - two fools beyond the pale.
S Judah ,   Jerusalem   (07.01.10)
If you are ignorant of Judisim, your religion , tradition and culture place you at least keep it quiet. Don't boast about it in public. As for who cares about Rav Ovadia's opinion. How about every Rabbi, every traditional and religious jew and every Sephardi at the very least. That makes up the majority of Am Yisrael. The better question to ask is who cares for your opinion, ah ! you and you. Micky and Mini Mouse.
