32. S. Judah , a question
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.01.10)
Is Rabbi Yossef Sephardi ? Ladino speaking ? Or Mizrachi'i ? A difference a think . Regarding his saying . I think that everyone should retire at a certain age because nobody is able to give correct advice at his age . We heard already how he , some years ago , shouted at a journalist .

34. 32 A good question -
S Judah ,   jerusalem   (07.01.10)
As I understand it stricty speaking Ashkenaz is the medieval Hebrew name for Germany and Sephard is that for Spain. The terms seem to be used as a general description for groups of Jews. I have noticed that true Sephardim (ie those with a clear Spanish lineage) take offence to mizrahim who are the majority of Sephardim being so called. The Temanim on the other hand take offence to being called Sephardim. And if you want my view some of the Spanish mob have a rather elitist and condesending view as regards the rest of us. As for Rabbi's retiring - I don't think Rav Ovadia has an official job. But in the Rabinical community age generally has great clout. Rav Eliyashiv hit a 100 this year, at 90 Rav Ovadia is still young and I believe he has an Iraqi background - mizrahi.
35. S Judah , 34 , Thanks
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.01.10)
I think that the Sephardi people in Israel , who are mostly of European origin [ Bulgaria , Turkey , Grece ] had already a western education when they came to our country . This is maybe why ,they can have , as some Ashkenazi , an elitist view of themselve . I think we should not call the Mizrachi'im Sephardim , it's not correct , they are [ for most of them ] not . I'm not Mizrachi nor Sephardi , but from Polish origin , Ashkenazi . And this even if some 20 generations ago my ancestors came from Turkey [ coming from Spain ???]

"How about every Rabbi, every traditional and religious jew and every Sephardi at the very least. That makes up the majority of Am Yisrael." You're obviously completely out of touch with reality.
37. Unprecedented Ruling
Tessa ,   Independence, MO USA   (07.02.10)
It seems that progress is being made. Some will think it is wonderful and others will wonder what is to become of this world! As a Christian I don't feel it is my place to comment about another's religion.I do have a comment about the "talkbacks". Why is there so much obvious hatred. Isn't it truly showing our own character? It is just a way to be hateful without being held accountable. I see this all over the internet. Isn't it time we begin to treat each other with respect on the internet and in our own lives. I realize at times true evil passes our way and we must fight it. Alexander Solzhenitsyn said "The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between political parties either - but right through every human heart.",
38. 37 Ignorance of Judaism, hatred of Judaism in the TB's
Jae ,   Lynn US   (07.02.10)
The only way to conquer hate within our own people (some TB's), is the life we live, the example we set. Example is always the best leader. Good job Rabbi Yosef, as an ashkenasi, I wish the ashkenasi rabbis differed to the tamanim, mizrahim who seem to have more common sense, less fear and less OCD. But I can idenitfy. when ashkenasim are tortured by the church/europe for nearly 2000 yrs it can get to your head and make you think youre a sinner x10000 and God wants this,, thus for some, the need to fixate on minutae and be "perfect". It can be debillitating needless to say. King David was the great example, very human, very strong, very humble. May we all emulate the creator of Psalms who ruled Jerusalem 3000 years ago.
39. what other motive?
Chani ,   Israel   (07.02.10)
Scoffers of ancient halacha ask yourself this: if sensitivity to a helpless newborn was not the motive behind the law, then what could it be? BTW, all you lactation "professionals",my 6-month old daughter was nursing exclusively when I became pregnant again. The debilitating morning sickness and heavy fatigue made breast-feeding tortuous for me, so I weaned her before she was seven months old.
