1. Possible Reason
emanon ,   USA   (06.30.10)
I don;t subscribe to the reason, but it is possible the poor woman is being sacrificed in the name of peace. Rather than risk being attacked by rabid taliban backed jihadists, determined to put their brand of immorality on the world, the West is saying nothing. If this indeed the case, her death is all the more a loss. It means the islamic world has won an important victory: the precedent to impose a barbaric interpretation of sharia sanctioned brutality without the world lifting a finger to stop them. Sharia law is but one of the corner stones in their desire to impose their belief on the world.
2. If organizations are silent, here's something
Schreiber   (06.30.10)
that ONE person with a camera could do: GET HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS TOP PEOPLE ON RECORD. Interview people prominent in anti-Israel organizations and carry out an regular interview about miscellaneous topics. Then question them about their views on the oppression of women and children in Islamic countries. Next ask them what have they done or are they ready to do about it. Finally ask them to explain their obsession with Israel and absolute neglect and indifference to REAL oppression and suffering in the world. GET THEM ON RECORD. Then compile their answers to those three particular questions and turn them in to a film for YouTube and an expanded version into a documentary. Future generations need to know how Human Rights activists have betrayed REAL VICTIMS in their quest to destroy the Jewish state. GET THEIR NAMES ON RECORD.
3. Matty, Peter, Nour, Salma, any comment on this?

no? that's what i thought.
4. :: When the world is thirsty for oil, human rights is out
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (06.30.10)
5. Because the west is Hypocrite
Johnny ,   Nazareth   (06.30.10)
Because the UN has majority of Islamic countries and supporters of islamic countries, because Libya with Zimbabwe are in charge of the UN human rights council, because Amnesty international and the human rights org. are a joke condemning Israel and ignoring all the atrocities, killing, massacres, honor killing, raping and the squished woman rights in islamic countries and third world countries. UN is a joke and Ban ki moon is a puppet in the hand of muslims. Not UN anymore but UNFIC = United Nations For Islamic Countries. Shame on these hypocrites, they will be the first people to pay for their errors.

8. God's decree
Wendell ,   UK   (06.30.10)
All well and good Yoaz, but lets not forget where the original decree of stoning adulterers came from. The bible.
9. who's business is it anyway?
tiki ,   belgium   (06.30.10)
Mr. Mendel..."You are 'mingling in the 'internal policies of Iran and the WORLD cannot allow that, can it? It isn't Israel, I mean, that's a different cup of tea, there the WORLD has 'rights and obligations towards those 'poor, suffering and innocent Pals. I mean, a few more Iranien women stoned ....who cares, a few more gays hanged.......who cares, a few more protesters shot....who cares. But ONE 'Palestinian hurt by those evil ISRAELI's, now that's 'catastrophic, that must be debated at the UN/EU/US/Arab leage, that's a reason for a new Intifada, a reason to stop the 'PEACE PROCES! It would be funny if it wasn't so 'idiotic, tragic and sad.
10. where is world?
moron ,   galut   (06.30.10)
dumb question--rights activists for animals, opalestine or women are interested in destroying western civilization so iran is exemt and it's not about women's rights--we learned that with pres clinton
11. Because the West makes a difference between Israel & Ira
berlonski ,   berlin   (06.30.10)
(Still) the west sees Israel as a part of itself, as a democracy and a country where human rights have a value in the eyes of the state. Which is clearly not the case with Iran. So the west naturally is more interested and takes more serious in what Israel is doing than Iran. But the author is crying: Why don't you treat us the same like these Mullahs? Does he really want Israel to be put on the same level like this dictatorship? No, it's just another version of the tune: Everybody is against us anyway, so we dont have to ask ourselves critical questions.
12. #8
ZS ,   US   (06.30.10)
Although stoning was allowed during Old Testament Biblical times (historical/cultural context must be taken into account) - that law was ended with the birth of Christ and the new law of "Love your neighbors as yourself" was instituted. Followers of Christ are exhorted to examine another similar story found in the Bible in John 8 regarding the impending stoning of a woman caught in adultery. The upcoming stoning of a woman caught in adultery in Iran is an utter abomination and disregard for the sanctity of life, and those that carry it out are deceived by hatred.
13. #11 it's not "why they don't" but "why they do" treat unfair
ygalg ,   isreal   (06.30.10)
can you explain this? "Iran became an official member of the 'UN’s Women’s Rights Commission'"
14. stoning in iran
lenise ,   israel   (06.30.10)
#8 & #12 It would be advisable for people who comment on stoning in the Tanach to do some investigation and find out exactly how it was applied by Jewish Law. Firstly an adulteress must be caught in the act, there must be two independent witnesses, who had nothing to do with one another or the woman. Then, the matter was taken to the Sanhedrin. It is a known fact that death sentences were never applied hastily. During the Second Temple Period the death sentences were applied as a last resort, and every effort was usually made to prevent it from happening as human life is very precious. In fact very seldom was it applied, and if once in ten years a death sentence was handed down it was called "a bloody court". Too often the Torah law is misunderstood, eg eye for an eye tooth for a tooth, which does not mean if you lose your eye due to my action you have a right to remove mine. It means that if accidentally your eye is damaged and you are unable to work etc due to my actions I must pay you compensation commensurate with the possible income which you have lost ie the value of your eye. An understanding of the Oral Torah would help in appreciating how the Torah law has been misrepresented in the Western, especially, Christian world which sees the Tanach as the book of harsh decrees and the NT a book of love.
15. The real reason
Dino2 ,   Zurich, Switzerland   (06.30.10)
No Israelis can be blamed for it. YET.
16.  to #8 The Bible said "stone adulterers"
Rob ,   Israel   (06.30.10)
Words written 2500 years ago - more than 1000 years before Islam began. What would all you "human rightists" have to say if in modern Israel adulterers were stoned to death.? I'm sure you would all be out there protesting the "cruelty of the Zionists"
17. #13 The UN is not the West
berlonski ,   berlin   (06.30.10)
... the majority of the UN countries are not (real) democracies ... so why taking serious what this so called human rights council says ... Mixing everything in one pot - the world, the UN, the West - is just another sign of the Israeli disease of "we are so special, we are so alone - and the others in the end are all the same" ... how childish ... If your forefathers had been that pathetic and childish, Israel wouldn't exist today. What are you doing to yourself?
18. To: No. 16
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.30.10)
Actually, dear, the Jews have evolved. We are no longer slave-owners, and we no longer tolerate polygamy. Stoning as a method of capital punishment is therefore clearly out of the question. Islam, on the other hand, has not evolved. It has devolved. You need look no further than the countries which apply Sharia law to figure that out. Frankly, I think I would rather be a stray dog in an Islamofascist country than a woman. I would get far more respect and much better treatment. I fear that there is nothing that can keep this poor woman from her fate. Any protest from the West will only make the cruel mullahs in Iran more determined to carry out this unspeakable sentence. I am certain that even offers from other countries to accept her as a refugee will be ignored. The Iranian regime is bloodthirsty -- there is no other word -- and impossibly cruel; they are determined to see the sentence carried out in the manner prescribed. I wish this woman G-dspeed. I do not think that anyone can help her now.
19. To all those who quote the Bible
Sagi   (06.30.10)
and say that stoning etc. was practiced in ancient Israel. You are absolutly right, it was written and it was practiced. But, and this is a big but, a very big one. Close on 2000 years ago Israel and its judicial system was the first nation in this world to condemn and expunge these laws from practice. This was a long long time before other civilized nations terminated the death sentence. It worked like this. The Sanhedrin permitted itself to pass the death sentence only in one out of 70 cases, and even then it was immediately commuted. We became civilized eons before others, while today some remain barbarians. Human life, whether our malefactors and antagonists like it or not, is sacred to us.
20. I propose a much "harsher" sentence
Sagi   (06.30.10)
Strip her of her citizenship and deport her to the "Zionist Entity" where she will no doubt "suffer" much greater pain than being stoned. I am sure that every citizen in "the cruel Zionist Entity" will agree to this. She at least will continue to breathe, albeit living with a bunch of "bloodthirsty, child killing Zionists".
21. Hypocritical Iranian Society
Tom W. ,   Windsor, Canada   (06.30.10)
This is a society that is based on the hypocrisy of legal short-term marriage contracts, see: http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/mideast/tmpmrig.htm This dirty game allows poverty driven Iranian women to legally enter into short-term marriage contracts in an underground industry of prostitution. And the terrible and sicken irony is that the clerics that run this backward Islamic theocratic state are some of the most notorious users of these temporary marriage certificates! Those clerics who are calling for the stoning of this woman, how many temporary marriage licenses have they racked up in just one year! How can any person be deluded to such a degree that he/she feels he/she can fool God's judgment in the end! Marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment, it's not an institution to be used for a sexual quickie in order to justify you didn't commit adultery! If Iranian society allows for a piece of paper to be signed by 2 unmarried individuals for the expressed purpose of sex, it belittles the legal institution of marriage to such a degree that adultery could be committed by persons with or without a piece of paper! In such a society, adultery should only be declared if either or both individuals were mentally lustful rather than in love with each other! If Sakineh Ashitani was truly in love with her sexual partner than why is that a crime punishable by death?
22. Matty, there is a first time for everything
Golani ,   Vineland, USA   (06.30.10)
Matty, I am in shock, but this is the first time that I have seen anything that you have written that made sense and was not downright hatred towards the Jewish people or the Jewish Nation. Kol ha kavod lach, This may be the last time that this could be said.
23. # 18 Sarah B
Golani ,   Vineland, USA   (06.30.10)
Sarah, don't worry, you and I generally speak the same language. I just wanted to add, that is is said that stoning in the biblical days was law, but it was designed as a warning to keep people honest. The laws were such that stoning was never really carried out.
24. This is what should happen
Sagi   (07.01.10)
if this sentence is carried out. Each and every civilized nation of this world should immediately cut off all diplomatic and commercial ties with Iran. This means the closing of all missions and offices and enterprises owned or operated, wholly or partially by the Iranian government. A total embargo on all goods and services given to Iran or given by Iran. No compromises, all the way. Shut down all air and sea traffic and close all ports to Iranian ships. It won't happen, but it should.
