My story was very similar to this one, but 11 years ago. I am originally from USSR, but my mom was born in Germany few years after the war. Apparently, according to the rabanut investigator my mom's birth certificate is fake... because... she's never seen one looking like this before!!! It was issued by NKVD (Ministry on Internal affairs or "secret police"), but guess what, one of us faked it!! Years ago no one really checked to prove if someone was Jewish or not since not many people were interested in conversion or aliyah. Things have changed greatly, but I still think that things have to be checked out because of so many false papers, etc.
