1. Seperate state and religion
Avi ,   Israel   (07.06.10)
This case clearly outlines the need to seperate state from religion. In a so called democratic country people are denied a choice. There should be and one day will be an alterantive. I would advise the couple in question to bypass the rabbinute go to Cyprus , get married there. thenn have a reception in Israel. Enough of the Jewish teliban and their corruption.
2. Agreed
Simon ,   Jerusalem   (07.06.10)
this is not good. is there not a way that Tzohar can help people? I'm sure if she had money or protectzia things might be different, which is a shame.
3. Marry outside Israel!
John ,   Europe   (07.06.10)
What's the problem? Cyprus is nice. Or come to Europe and marry there. You even have a honeymoon in one package. Then you come back, validate marriage and throw a party for all friends. And laugh in the face of the selfish and self-centered rabbis who lately more and more are insisting on "pure Jewish blood".
4. Who's a Jew?
john ,   Ramla Israel   (07.06.10)
I'm disgusted. This kind of behavior by the the Rabbinical Court/Investigators, causes me much shame and disgust. It make me ashamed to be Jewish. Not that this has anything to do with world politics, but it's no wonder there are so many anti-semetics and so much hate towards the Jewish Nation, if this is the way we treat our own bretheren. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING - as if we don't have enough enemies in the world, we are our own worst enemies.
5. Sounds like there may be more to the story than we're told
observer   (07.06.10)
It certainly sounds an open and shut case - so why should the bureaucrats make extra work for themselves, it's not as if they work on commission for the number of applicants they refuse. Something must have made them suspicious. As for the suggestion to convert, it would not be a standard conversion with all the waiting, but a formality because of some question or other. Perhaps the same Rav who married the parents would assist in that.
6. & who is to blame?
Yehuda ,   Ashdod, ISRAEL   (07.06.10)
Why don't you pour your scorn and fury on those who are to blame for this abominable situation? Those who imported tens of thousands of goyim in order to dilute authentic Judaism in Israel, those who provide conversion papers for a small (or large) fee, thereby making all converts suspect, those who deny any connection to the Torah yet feel they have the right to legislate who is a Jew. Stop complaining about those who are at least making the attempt to confirm the Jewish lineage of people marrying in. Start pointing fingers at those who are truly to blame!
7. Rivkah- keep up the good work. This is so sad
(07.06.10)
next Jews will prefer to be classed as non Jews so as not to be harassed. This is really bad and must be questioned. The monopoly the rabbinate has must be taken away to the courts, they , are abusing it.
8. A RELIGION?
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.06.10)
We are a people, B'nai Yisroel. Nowhere in our sources is reference made to us as a religion.
9. why this happens
Mallory Lutz ,   Ra'anana Israel   (07.06.10)
This happens because in words of many of the modern orthodox Jews I work, in Israel, "the word of the Rabbi is law and not to be questioned". In fact they go so far as to say that Orthodox Jews do not need to be responsible for their actions if the action is required by their Rabbi. I appreciate you bringing this information to the attention of the general public but until the Orthodox community chooses to do something about the Rabbinut nothing will change and more and more couples will wed outside of Israel. Many travel agencies offer 1-2 day marriage specials-fly out and get married, fly back and live!
10. prove it...
D ,   London   (07.06.10)
" Let the Jew who can prove that he’s Jewish step forward. In fact, other than someone who has a certificate of conversion, there is no Jew in the world who can prove he’s Jewish." You seem to have just proven the investigator's point.
11. IF this story is true as written and I do
Israeli 2   (07.06.10)
not doubt that it may be, the Rabbis in question have no knowledge of Judaism. It is written in the Zohar that today no one knows who is a Jew and who is not. Only presence of Neshama determines who is a Jew and who is not. Parentage, heritage all this is baloney. It then follows that all conversions are nul and void.
12. If you walk like a duck and quack like a duck - then you are
Ben   (07.06.10)
a duck. But if you do not keep shabat and eat pork - are you jewish???? Better have prove. The people who keep mitzvot do not need prove.
13. to #12 (Ben)
Rickie ,   Brazil   (07.06.10)
Some goyim keep mitzvot. Are they jews, too?
14. This happen to me too
rachel ,   Tel Aviv   (07.06.10)
this happen to me too, but much worst, I couldent get marry for almost 9 years and I lost my twins because of the stress, my husband left me for an other , but an american/convert from ohio, and I lost almost if not everything I ever had have, now Im too old to have children and I live with a man but i cant still not marry even thou the rabinute says Im jewish but I dont have enough pappers to get marry in Israel, and i'm not going to get out of israel to get marry in an island like many israelis do today, I regret not doing that I guess.
15. I have a similar story
Shoshana ,   Jerusalem   (07.06.10)
My story was very similar to this one, but 11 years ago. I am originally from USSR, but my mom was born in Germany few years after the war. Apparently, according to the rabanut investigator my mom's birth certificate is fake... because... she's never seen one looking like this before!!! It was issued by NKVD (Ministry on Internal affairs or "secret police"), but guess what, one of us faked it!! It went on for few months with this woman (so called investigator), calling my mother, pretending to be my friend and asking all sorts of personal questions, like "what are you calling your daughter at home?" etc. It was retarded, until one day she called one of her rabanut people who said "leave her alone, it's a real and rare birth certificate"... I guess I was just lucky.
16. to #13
Ben ,   US   (07.06.10)
And which mitzvot do tey keep? Bagels and lox?
17. Same thing happened to me.
Jacob Erickson ,   Holon, Israel   (07.06.10)
Luckily I started preparing a long time in advance before my wedding. My father isn't Jewish so my parents didn't have a Jewish wedding, it took 5 and a half months of going to the rabbinical council and in the end some huge family research project that in the end found out that the rabbi doing the research's ancestors and mine are related from back in the Ukraine.
18. #5 Observer, #10 D
Solomon ,   Bklyn   (07.06.10)
You just don't get it, do you? Neither of you. Especially Observer who hides his/her head in the sand at every opportunity in many, many posts. Yes, we know; "your way is the only way".
19. antisemitism
marc ,   saar   (07.06.10)
The truth is that some antisemitic types came to Israel with a simple mission: to destroy the jewish stamina. It happened that some of them succeeded in becoming rabbi as this investigator, and try to prevent genuine jews to have children together.
20. #6 - & who is to blame?
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (07.06.10)
Ben Gurion, for giving these lunatics authority over "religious" matters in the first place.
21. Jewish?
Rina ,   Jerusalem   (07.07.10)
Years ago no one really checked to prove if someone was Jewish or not since not many people were interested in conversion or aliyah. Things have changed greatly, but I still think that things have to be checked out because of so many false papers, etc.
22. prove it or just convert!
smith   (07.07.10)
problem: more than half of jewish poeple can not do a conversion, they will give up... Good luck for this women.
23. YAHSHUALAYIN
cristian ,   arg   (07.07.10)
the kingdom of the lord is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field but while men slept his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way but when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit then appeared the tares also so the servants of the householder came and said unto him sir didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? he said unto them an enemy hath done this the servants said unto him wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? but he said nay lest while ye gather up the tares ye root up also the wheat with them let both grow together until the harvest and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers gether ye together first the tares and bind them in the bundles to burn them but gather the wheat into my barn, the kingdom of the lord is like to a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field which indeed is the least of all seeds but when it is grown it is the greatest among herbs and becometh a tree so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof, the kingdom of the lord is like unto leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened all these things spake mashiaj unto the multitude in parables and without a parable spake he not unto them that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet saying I will open my mouth in parables I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world,he that soweth the good seed is the son of man the field is the world the good seed are the children of the kingdom but the tares are the children of the wicked one the enemy that sowed them is the devil the harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are the angels as therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire so shall it be in the end of this world, the son of man shall send forth his angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and them which do iniquity and shall cast them into a furnace of fire there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their father who hath ears to hear let him hear
24. when the good rabbi
LARRY ,   USA   (07.07.10)
gets his lazy children off there chicken shit asses and they serve in the IDF to protect his status to wave his finger to the left or right {remember those days rabbi} he should get with the program and allow real israeli citizens to breed and florish in a jewish nation not exterminate this process . makes me sick to think these peaople who do not consider themselves israeli to have this power .get your ass out and settle in egypt have a nice life and in 6 months you will be begging for your homeland
25. These "rabbis" are goyim in disguise
Harmon Bond ,   New York   (07.07.10)
Professional con men who thrive on the misery of others. The are misanthropes and misogynists. Nothing about their behavior or motives is Jewish. They create new halachot to suit their criminal enterprise, ignoring the beauty of the religion our ancestors bequeathed to us. They extort taxpayer money from the government and pay little or no taxes themselves. They use their so-called religiouos enterprise to launder money. They and their followers are crafty goyim in quaint costumes who have duped the bulk of the Israeli public - even the seculars - into believeing they are authentic.
26. not exactly a woman with an open mind
david ,   new york   (07.07.10)
hmmm ... rivkah lubitch from the "center for women's justice" - how do you think she's going to write? do you think this is a woman with an open mind, or perhaps instead an activist femenist?? in any case, we need the rabinate to make sure that jews marry jews in the state of israel. sorry ms. lubitch, a photocopied passport from the former soviet union is not exactly trustworthy enough. question: would any country allow someone to gain citizenship based on a photocopy from the soviet union? what if the security screener at elal got hired based upon a photostat of a passport from the soviet union. would you fly on the plane? you see, photocopies of passports from the soviet union are good enough for something you don't care about. but not for something you DO care about. thank god there are rabbis who make it their business to care about jewish identity, since ultimately it is more important than even who is behind the xray at elal.
27. The Jewish Agency & Sharansky to the Rescue
Michael ,   New York, NY   (07.07.10)
They know how to instill Jewish identity. What they and he have forgotten is how to resist tyranny. The only way this is going to get solved is to let these leftovers from the middle ages have their own theocracy. Maybe they can have jobs, an army and taxes in it too.
28. #6
,     (07.07.10)
and you would have that number wouldn't you! then where, what, who, when our documents are not accepted, show us 'your' documents! G-DDENYU
29. I don't see y humans need to prove their religion before
ghostq   (07.07.10)
their kind, the only thing that important is their respect toward god and to othe human beings, if you r so caught in ceremonial than you miss the poit of being jewish, it's not the ritual that count or the verses you memorize, some people got better memory than others, it's what lay in one heart, the only way to be close to god is not through other human being but his own personal vitue toward the lord, any other idolizing is like Rabis rituals r NOT jewish and they WONT bring you close to god, but more they will give some humans the toxic embtion to control other minds. in my opinion the need of proof is not towards men but to god only.
