Dennis Greenstein ,   Marlton NJ USA   (07.05.10)
I wonder if the high level delegation will also check up on Gilad Shalit who, as his father pointed out today, is the only one in Gaza suffering deprivation of his Hunan rights. Interesting that this duo of assay and zapatero are meeting: One who's country either killed or expelled all of it's Jews, and the other who wants to murder all the Jews living along side of him. Not much had changed since 1492. May they both " gai in draird"

When Olmert was stupid enough to put Turkey in charge of mediating with Syria they were not interested in Israel they were demanding in diplomatic language Israel give the Golan, Kineret wanters and anything else Assad demanded. Before Obama the US was mostly on Israels side with the Syria issue and Assad doesn't wamt anybody involved in this thats going to back him all the way. Olmert was an idiot for ever accepting Turkey as a mediator and we must never again allow Turkey any other muslim nation or European country to have any say in the matter. As long as Obama is president we must avoid bringing up the Syria issue because Obama is an arab yes man. What the arabs want Obama will try and get especially if they use the words peace process. The Golan referendum bill must be passed requring a referendum unless an 80 out of 120 MKS vote in favor of giving it upto give up the rather than the current 61 seats. With democratic laws passed by an independent state not even the US can demand we give it all up for Assads signature & Nobel Prize for the PM to share with Assad. Time to stand up for our own interests instead of arabs. We have the land the arabs want so why do we let them dictate terms as they are coming from the position of weakness.

6. Turkey can never again be a false mediator
john   (07.05.10)
It's not only very difficult for Turkey to play a role in negotiations, it is IMPOSSIBLE
7. If Assad really wants peace...
Ariel ,   Canada   (07.05.10)
He doesn't need the Islamic republic of Turkey to act as a go between, he could just pick up the phone and say hey Bibi let's talk face to face and do this once and for all. Period. The Turkish Gov't of Islamists and Terrorist Supporting Buffoons are a bunch of whiners and need to be spanked into oblivion. Turks need to take a careful look at the direction the Islamists are taking them! As does Syria

9. Why is the pressure always on Israel!?!
Lee ,   Manchester UK   (07.06.10)
we have gone completely insane we are sending our boys off to Afghanistan in the name of the 'war on terror' - where this' war on terror' is being conducted a very comfortable 10,000 whatever miles away from our very doorsteps in UK/Europe, yet on the other hand here we have Turkey a now rising islamist terror supporting state bowing to the Iranians calling the shots on 'OUR' behalf here, whipping the always enthusiastic xenophobic Spanish anti-Semites to add their twist to the whole story thus sensationalising ONCE AGAIN the Jews usual role as the criminal, when all Israel doing is securing it's TERROR INFESTED DOORSTEP AS TERROR IS ALL AROUND ISRAEL ... just as the NATO/US/EU/UN forces are doing in Afghanistan and previously Iraq ... am i going mad here or am i seeing a blatant DOUBLE STANDARD!? Why does the world hate Israel and the Jews so much.
10. Russians used British passports- world yawns
Stephen in New York ,   New York   (07.06.10)
Russians used British passports- world yawns. With the recent breakup of long term, deep cover Russian spy teams in the US it came out that many of the passports used were fake British. Notice that nobody has any interest in this aspect, unlike the interest in fake passports used in the recent presumably Israeli operation in the Gulf. Now that outraged everybody.
11. lol well, Mr Assad, tell that to Erdogan

Standing Tall ,   USA   (07.06.10)
In answer to your very correct question, antisemitism never dies. It just finds a convenient, more acceptable way of expressing it. Simply put, hatred of Israel and everything it does to defend itself is a great example. The people who are so unreasonable and want to see the demise of Israel can state they don't hate Jews, just the "government of Israel". Yeah right, I wish I had a bridge to sell them. Thank you for your ability to see the obvious hatred of Israel and Jews in the world today.
13. #8 - no they don't
Dina   (07.06.10)
They actualy love us. For the simple reason that Israel is the one country in the world that does exactly what everyone tells them to do. - and still gets beaten for it. The one country in the world that does exactly what the other countries would do and does. - But can be slammed for it. The one country in the world that accepts the other countries hypocracy and comes back for more! Israel is the one country in the world with the most complicated problems, and you the rest of the world can sit their armchairs and pass judgement about matters that you know nothing about. Without Israel the rest of the world would have to deal with their own problems and taht would be a catastrophy.
14. Human nature
Dina   (07.06.10)
Bravo!!!! Your comment is nothing but the truth. I believe that it is human nature to hang onto something of the past and sadly antisemitism seems to be it. Instead of embrassing the one democracy in the Middle East, a country that has brought so much to the modern world the lack of understanding and willingness to comprehend does exactly the oppisite. I ask you how mad is this http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/30/activists-arms-factory-acquitted ??
15. Ihave some res[pect for Assad but none for Erdogan
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (07.06.10)
1. We know what Assad is after: The land (Golan) that was taken from them in 1967 back. It understandable. Israel needs to be safe which is also understandable. Once Israel's safety is properly addressed a solution will be formulated with Syria which wil be beneficial for both not different then the Israeli Egyptian peace when Israel gave oil rich Sinai to Egypt in exchange of security. Today I do not like the Syrian hostilities (in the form of supporting Hezbollah and Iran) but I respect them as an enemy that can turn into a friend one day. 2. The statement that Assad made about Turkey also is very important and should be analyzed properly. First of all the popularity of Turkish PM Recep bey is not appreciated in most of the Arab leadership. They see this as an intrusion by a nation that once ruled them for several centuries / which they rid with the help of the British. Arabs don't wish tobe dominated by Turks again. 3. Syria as well as some other Arab countries' leaders would like to see a secular democracy in Turkey that they could use it as a model to reform their own Muslim communities and step up to the current century, become a contributor to science, arts, medicine etc. They are concerned that Erdogan is doing he opposite carrying Turkey back to the middle ages. CONCLUSION: Syria and other moderate Arab nations would lie to see a modern population mostly Muslim but secular western democracy as a role model for their enlightenment and progress. They do not desire a Turkey dominating or leading the Arab world. This is what I understand from Assad's words.

17. The world hates Zionism, not the Jews
Paulmaximus ,   Afghanistan   (07.06.10)
To #8 and #9, the world does not hate Jews, the followers of one of the world's minor religions. The Jewish religion later was developed into two of the world's great religions, first Christianity and later into Islam. What the 'World' hates is the Zionist philosophy developed along with National Socialism by a German 19th century idea of national and ethnic superiority. Both were/are fundamental flawed and led to widespread war; both are guilty of being 'enemies of all mankind'. While the Jewish faith was developed in Palestine, most people who now practise that religion are descended from people in north Africa and the east Mediterranean following the great Jewish conversions of the Roman era when the religion was more widely practised then now. For example in 15AD there were twice as many Jews in Egyptian compared with Israel. The pressure on Israel is primarily due to the recognition that the 1848 establishment of the countery against the majority of the population of Palestine was fundamently immoral, a decision in part due to the hatreds of the Cold War.
18. Dealing with murderers will not solve the Israeli-Arab ...
Ron B. ,   Lod   (07.06.10)
Dealing with murderers will not solve the Israeli-Arab conflict. Arab murderers should not be put on the same footing as normal citizens. The EU should know that there are never good excuses for murder : ignoring the murder is the equivalent of complicity. The fact that murderers are “democratically” elected doesn’t change the fact that they are murderers. It is the duty of every State, not only Israel, to defend its citizens – its absolute duty. Only a clear, fair and objective approach of the painful Israelo-Arab problem will have a chance to solve it as explained at : http://xrl.us/bi5c8
19. Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza?
Ron B. ,   Lod   (07.06.10)
Courtesy of the Palestinian Ma’an news agency, is a report on Gaza’s new Olympic-sized swimming pool . (Most Israeli towns don’t have Olympic-size swimming pools. One wonders how an area that claims to be starved of water and building materials and depends on humanitarian aid builds an Olympic size swimming pool and creates a luxury lifestyle for some while others are forced to live in abject poverty as political pawn refugees?) 20. Assad wants to say: Turkey must remain friendly with "Israel
Salma ,   Palestine   (07.06.10)
For the Mideast instability of course !! Assad can be an honest broker between the two parties:)
21. Humnitarian catastrophe in Gaza
jeff ,   IRELAND   (07.06.10)
80% of Gazans live on food aid. Pictures of markets "packed" with goods are misleading-these are stalls with items smuggled through tunnels. The IDF would have us believe Gaza is Monte Carlo or Cannes. The truth is most of Gaza is rubble, and the IDF won't allow building materials in. As for Olympic swimming pools and Roots restaurant, the fomrer was built on donations and has been 30 years in the making. Itt is the only pool in the Palestinian territories. The latter, most ofr the footage of its opening was shot in 2005, before the blockade. The fact is Roots restaurant is beyond the reach of most ordinary Palestinians. It is common to find oasis like the restaurant in many 3rd world places blighted by war and strife that cater to politicians and media-money talk, while the majorety suffer. In the case of Gaza, this suffering is a direct result of Israeli actions.
22. #19 Ron,This is what we call the will to live

23. Peace with Syria
JUDAH THE LION   (07.06.10)
The cunning Assad wants back the Golan to send rockets and to threaten Israel.Good move Mr Assad, you will not get the Golan.Make peace with Israel without the Golan or get lost
24. #21 jeff
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (07.06.10)
The average income in Gaza is higher than in Egypt - and they don't even have to work for it. So don't tell us about "humanitarian catastrophes" that don't exist. And if the "Palestinians" spend all their money for weapons and not for food, who cares?
25. TURKEY to be mediator
TAHRIR QUDS ALYAHUDI   (07.06.10)
No chance Turkey will be fair.Erdogan will be the Syrian side and will sell Israel for a piece of Turkish delight without coffee.DONT TRUST TURKEY

ASSAD CAN BE AN HONEST BROKER BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES Salma are you feeling alright today? Assad an honest broker pigs would fly before Assad acts like an honest broker. This incident between Turky & Israel affects no other countries but them and has no impact on the rest of the region. Assads problem is as long as Israel & Turkey don't like each other then Israel will not invite Turkey to be any kind of mediator over his attempt to get his hands on the Golan & share of Kineret waters. Whilst Obama is pro arab & anti Israel he is concentrating on the palestinian front which also suits the US jewish voters. It suited the US to let Turkey mediate because it allowed them to stay out the picture and concentrate on other matters and right now they are out of it. Turkey was supporting every single demand Assad made and was a mediator in title only. If Israel and Turkey are not on good terms and Obama is concentrating on the palestinians Assad has no allies in his attempt to get the Golan.
