1. Lovely story. She is welcome
Sarah ,   Tel aviv   (07.11.10)
2. I really appreciate what she did...
Forfaiski   (07.11.10)
but honestly, "This is a humanitarian move necessary for anyone who saves a Jewish life", "She risked her life in order to save Jews and we are obligated to take care of her"? That sounds so very biased. Is it because the baby was Jewish that the fact it was saved is so important? If it had been an Israeli Arab baby, would the ministry of the Interior have reacted in the same way? Just asking. The woman's a hero, now that's no question. But I find the grounds on which she is granted citizenship to be very questionable.

5. #2 The baby's parents were Murdered by Islamic Fascists
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (07.11.10)
The family was specifically targeted by Islamics for the sole reason they were Jewish. Horrific atrocities were perpetrated against the mother and father. The baby the mother was pregnant with was also ruthlessly murdered. Your complaint is revolting and in extremely bad taste.
6. Citizenship
Shai ,   Porto Alegre, Brazil   (07.11.10)
I would grant her permanent residence and full resident rights in Israel, but not automatic citizenship. If she decided to live here, only after 5 years and would lose her citizenship after leaving the country for more than one year during her first 10 years. She was not born here or from Jewish Origin, so we could perfectly take care of her the usual way.
7. Not a complaint!
Forfaiski   (07.12.10)
Please, I'm a human being. I also stated that I consider her to be a hero, by the way, and if there's one thing I find revolting, it's the death of the baby's family. My point is merely that it's not right that she's becoming a citizen because she saved a Jewish baby, she should become a citizen because she saved an Israeli baby. A small but important difference. So I honestly don't see why my comment is "in extremely bad taste", and my feelings are hurt (really. You can't just hide behind a computer screen and start attacking people like this.) (And just in case some people don't know the difference, Israeli Arabs aren't the "Islamic Fascists" who perpetrated the terror attack.)

We will never stop grieving. We will never forget that thousands of Palestinian Authority Muslims celebrated the murders of our 3,000 fellow Americans and never forget that thousands of PA Muslims celebrate the murders of Israeli Jews whenever a Muslim killer blows up amongst Israelis. israelinsider.com Thousands of Palestinians again celebrate attacks, videotape suppressed By Ellis Shuman and israelinsider staff September 16, 2001 On Friday and Saturday, thousands of Palestinians again paraded through cities in the West Bank and Gaza, celebrating the attacks on the United States. "Jubilant Palestinians took to the streets of refugee camps of Lebanon and the West Bank, waving Palestinian flags and distributing sweets to celebrate the attacks. "Palestinian policemen celebrating and shooting into the air, in addition to civilians dancing," ...Arab students at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem held a party Tuesday night celebrating the attacks and giving out candy to participants. http://www.israelinsider.com/channels/diplomacy/articles/dip_0087.htm
10. #7 The baby's grandparents are Israelis!
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (07.12.10)
This innocent grandchild of Israelis lived through great horror and has an extremely strong attachment to this wonderful, brave Indian lady who saved his life.
11. Forfalsky you`ve got legitimate point but . . .
Justin Case ,   Brazil   (07.12.10)
I just think most israeli officials would act in the same way regardless of the ethnical profile of any israeli baby The simple fact that he stressed the JEWISH character of the saved life (notice: regardless of being israeli) does not invalidate his stance for it`s about granting ISRAELI citizenship, one created to the jewish people; the same would apply to saving any ISRAELI life. On the other hand I see no special reason to stress a non israeli ARAB character of a saved life in order of granting israeli citizenship. I would only complain if he pointed the JEWISH ISRAELI saved life, that would have been very discriminatory, but notice this did`nt happen, neither passed through none of our minds. Let`s not be shy in being jewish, this is a very christian stance, IMHO !
12. Citizenship for riteous gentiles
Josh S ,   USA   (07.12.10)
Now that Sandra Samuel has been taken care of, we should make her citizenship process formal. Anyone who risks his/her own life to save a Jew targeted by racists should be made eligible for aliya under the law of return. It's frightening to me that someone like this nanny might be turned away simply because there was no publicity to make the interior minister aware of what she did.
13. That is so sweet to hear. Such a great lady, Sandra is.
Rivkah   (07.12.10)
But since saving a Jew's life is rewarded with Israeli citizenship, how about me getting that reward for all my efforts to prevent the euthanasia of Ariel Sharon?
14. # 7
Birdi ,   Israel   (07.12.10)
You are mistaken as the nanny is not becoming a citizen, she has been granted temporary residential status, which does not last forever. She cannot vote & cannot draw national insurance. Not all Israeli Arabs are super clean citizens. Some have helped perpetrate terrorsit attacks.
15. #4 You don't need to post the obvious
Michael Hess ,   Charlotte, NC   (07.12.10)
It is well established by now that you oppose rescuing Jewish babies and Jews in general. Your family tradition doesn't allow it. There is no need to post the obvious.
16. to #7 your tb is in bad taste because
ghostq   (07.12.10)
your personal issue isn't the case here, and since none care when Arabs kill other Arabs, because lets face it none else will commite terror attack on arabs, that you can live in theoretic imaginary world, but in reality none will do that wonder y? anyway if Arabs kill other Arabs that is an inner arab issue every one who try to meddle there will get the blame, so you need to put the right perspective on things, because I don't think I ever heard on Arabs saving jews lives, on the contrary Arabs r the people who risk jews lives.
17. She mentions she has two kids, where are they now?
J Demarrais   (07.12.10)
Also, does she have a husband? family?
18. If it were an arab-israeli baby, yes she would
Yael ,   tel aviv   (07.12.10)
Had an Arab-Israeli family been in the same horrible situation in Mumbai and this woman risked her life to save their precious little child, yes, the govt would take the same moves. A couple years ago there was a horrible bus accident in the Sinai and many Arab-Israelis were injured and killed in it and there was such a rush in the country to donate blood for the victims that they had to turn people away because they already collected more than could be used. We look after our own.

Kudos Charles, & thanks alot for the link to the video.
20. Great decision !
DT ,   TA Israel   (07.12.10)
A wonderful well deserved end and VERY worthy of being an Israeli
21. citizenship
Chaim ,   PT   (07.12.10)
Channel 2 news got it wrong: they said she had been granted citizenhsip.
22. Sandra
Jew ,   Israel   (07.12.10)
She is a widow with two older children. She is truly a righteous gentile and should be helped in any way possible.
23. # 11, #14, #16 and #18
Forfaiski   (07.12.10)
#11 your opinion is valid, it's just that I hoped that after 62 years, Israel would have reached a point where it'd be more about being "Israeli" and not about being "Jewish", where religion and state wouldn't be so mixed up. But thank you for your explanations! #14 you're right, my mistake (about her status - because no state has super clean citizens). #16, you never heard of Arabs saving Jewish lives? Two links for you (which I found after a very short Google search, you could have done that yourself): http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/social_issues/jan-june10/righteous_04-05.html and http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/06/AR2006100601417_pf.html Don't judge Arabs like that, it's very insulting, I know many who only want peace and, guess what, have nothing to do with terrorism. Oh and no one commits terror attacks on Arabs? In what world do you live? Arabs and Muslims have suffered a great deal, just yesterday there was something on the news about the 8,000 killed in Eastern Europe about fifteen years ago. #18 Yael, thank you very much, that's basically what I wanted to know! I didn't mean to make people angry, I just found it weird that it was stressed that it was a Jewish life and not an Israeli life.
24. Fortaiski , do0n't play attention to this ignorant # 16
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.12.10)
I did'nt even need to google it , Muslims in North Africa have SAVED Jews during WWII .
