1. "deep disappointment"
Harry ,   Jerusalem   (07.13.10)
I am even more disappointed that you fail to truly understand what really a JEW is. The Torah defines who & how a Jew lives. Don't make this a Man interpretation issue. If you truly believe that the Torah is from God, there would not be any issues like this. People have become to sensitive, feeling, oops I did it again, the "FEEL" syndrome. Religion is not for us to interpret the way we feel, in order to claim, "We have 10,000 members in our Temple. No one is dividing people. People have divided themselves by altering Judaism to suit them. It just doesn't work that way. When I was still in the USA, I would tell people that I would respect total secular people over those who have tried to divide us with different forms of beliefs. The secular knows what Judaism is, but outright rejects it, while there are those who distort and want people to believe that their water downed way is also Judaism. Mr. Sharansky, deeply disappointed.
2. not second class - just not proper jews

3. Jews abroad are the most loyal supporters of Israel??
Susan ,   Israel   (07.13.10)
He clearly didn't read the article in Ynet recently about Jews abroad : There you go Mr. S, a reminder: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3917694,00.html
4. The liberal Jews of North America, come to Israel and
Titzah Shamir ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.13.10)
be part of the political cause in which you believe, but you can't eat the cake and have it too. You can't expect the people in Israel to act based on your interests and views while you continue to sip Starbucks coffee while expecting us, in Israel, to live based on your values.
5. Second class? You mean ousted.
Josh   (07.13.10)
They are trying to drive people away from Torah and our G-d. In an essence to force them into choose death or to accpet their teachings which for all intensive purposes is non-torah and choose death also. I will leave it up to the Hebrews to pick up the collections of false books and additions and figure it out for themselves. Its not hard. Just takes honesty.
6. "2nd class" Jews
Debbie ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.13.10)
Non-halachic converts are not 2nd class Jews. They are not Jews at all. And the people who stand to lose the most if this legislation is NOT passed are the halachic (read REAL) converts who are a legitimate part of the Jewish people. Will Sharansky et al hurt the true convert in order to appease the goy pretender? The Torah prescribes safeguards for the true convert, not the wanna-be-but-not-bad-enough. I know, Been there, done that.
7. "Now I see the faith of Carthag..."
John ,   Europe   (07.13.10)
Famous words of Hannibal Barkas, the Conquerer... He penetrated deep in Italy, destroying legion after legion of Roman soldiers, making Roman Empire shiver. But, after such long and crushing battles, he needed reinforcements. He sent envoys to Cartage to ensure resupply, but - not on his knowledge - due to INTERNAL HATRED and struggles the reinforcements were only shallow and useless. The only person who took the troops and marched to his aid was HASDRUBAL BARCAS, his brother. By that time results, of course, reached Hannibal and he waited for his brother's troops. But Hasdrubal was engaged in Battle of Metaurus, defeated and killed. His head was severed and thrown into Hannibal's camp. Seeing that, Hannibal said the famous quote in the title of this post. ---- For centuries, Judaism consisted of people who are against mainstream and for mainstream. The clashes of these people made Jews formidable nation as it is today - scientists, teachers, artists, financiers, rabbis etc. No one in the right mind - and here I point to the names of many famous "hilonim" on one and famous rabbis, like Kook or Maimonides on other side - dared or even considered to nullify the other side, making his side "only and prevalent". The silent consensus was - if Massiah comes, he will reveal us the truth, but I will stand on my position and you will stand on yours, with respect to each other. This law only weakens Jews, only weakens Israel's ties with galut and in the end, it will force Israel to do the most bitter: relinquish its territories. So history repeats again, or at least - it shows the tendency to come to a 67 AD and 135 AD. I just hope that it will only be a piece of territories, and not the whole land.
8. Sorry John #7
Harry ,   Jerusalem   (07.13.10)
No can do. Your way of thinking is off the mark, stating "making his side "only and prevalent". There is only one side. That is the point you all are missing. ONE GOD- ONE TORAH. The Torah forbids eating Pork. If a famous Hiloni would claim it is permitted, the Rambam would not even address such heresy. Even if the Rambam himself would permit eating Pork, we would not listen to him. You want to break a 3330 year link, of authentic Judaism by introducing a water down way of life. Sorry John, we have survived so far and God willing we will continue to live according to God's Will. This Law will only strengthen Judaism. By the way, do you want to buy an authentic Mona Lisa for 50 Bucks. A little water damaged. Don't refuse, you may make me feel bad.
9. Take off the 17th Century Polish clothes
Avigdor ,   USA   (07.13.10)
My apologies, but it is difficult to listen to the stick to the "old & true" ways while you wear old European Polish clothes. Get rid of the knickers and the Matrix coats before you tell others what the right way to be is. As to who is a "true" Jew, well I know what the world thinks and I know what many of you think, but that's really up to Gd--go figure.
10. Because Orthodox Conversions Are NEVER Annulled, Are They.
Sarah ,   Los Angeles   (07.13.10)
So you want everyone to undergo an Orthodox conversion. Well that's just fine, isn't it - until some ridiculous infighting between Rabbis causes FORTY THOUSAND Orthodox conversions to be annulled. What is the point. Reform or Conservative - the convert isn't a Jew. Convert Orthodox, and your conversion can be ripped out from under you anyway. Idiotic. In other words, why dont you just ban conversions altogether, since there is no security even in an Orthodox conversion.
11. "Oral "Traditions Called "Torah" is problem
Darrell K. Whitfield ,   Michigan City IN USA   (07.13.10)
The Rabbi are not for freedom of conscience but want to control others with their wording claiming the the oral traditions come from Moshe directly, when anyone with an unbiased open mind looking at the evidence knows that these traditions began after the Diasporia by the Rabbis giving their opinions. Nothing wrong with the traditions unless they suvert and change the definition of what is in the written Torah in the five books of Moshe. When this happens then Akiba and Hillel 2 along with many others must in good conscience be disregarded. As long as people keep some form of the written Torah interpreted by thier individual conscience they are Jews or Yahu'dim praisers of Yah.
12. People miss the point here
Leonard ,   Tuscalusa, MS   (07.13.10)
If you want to join a club, you must promise to abide by the rules, a promise means that when you make the promise you have all intentions of keeping the promise! A promise with your fingers crossed behind your back is a lie! The question is NOT who is a JEW, the question is who is a RABBI ! A Rabbi who does not believe that the Torah is divine and I do not mean divinely inspired, a Rabbi who does not believe that Moshe Emet VTorato Emet, a Rabbi who eats tarfut or is Mechalel Shabbat, or does not observe taharat HaMishpacha is not only NOT a RABBI He/she is not even an observant Jew. A Rabbi who does not teach and demand obedience to the Torah has no authority to induct others into Judaism. A Rabbi who does not explain the difficulties of Judaism to a potential convert who lets them pick and choose what mitzvot they will observe is a fraud and should be sued for malpractice This is what it is all about and one step further, not even every Orthodox Rabbi is an expert in the laws of conversion and many have no right to be involved in them. Instead of having animosity towards those who show these so called converts that they have been had, that they were fooled, that they are the victims of a fraud, they should initiate class action suits against these fraudulent clergy people for fraud, mental anguish etc etc etc
13. #11 not even
Eliyahu Konn ,   Yrushalayim   (07.14.10)
No you don't. Even at Har Sinai there was Torah "instruction" given to born Jew and non-Jew who would be a Jew to convert. The Beit Din system was set up then and the chukim and mishpat were decided by them, not every individual's conscience. Everyone following their own heart is condemned in Torah as Torah Jew's do their best to recite with meaning everyday. "ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם ואחרי עיניכם," You are selective in your observance which means you can't be a Jew or even a geir. You don't know the first thing about being Jewish when you don't treat The Name with כבוד.
14. What is Reform and Ortodox Halacha?
Gavriel Ephraim ,   Budapest, Hungary   (07.14.10)
Reform has its own Halacha based on respect for large parts of old rabbinic teachings but also on self-liberation from those parts of Ortodox Halacha which are impossible to follow and agree with if you are a liberal thinking human being. Why should we respect racist and sexist practices of this so called "obligatory" Halacha? Our way of Judaism is a joyful experiment and not a slavery! We let Ortodox Jews live as they want but they should have the same respect for our own Jewish choice even if they disagree. Why does this parasite intolerant minority (the ultra-ortodox) want to dominate other Jews and always come with the same arrogant comments? Our converts are 100% Jews according to OUR Halacha. We don't care of YOUR recognition but we care of equal rights for ALL Jewish streams in the Land of our ancestors which is the Land of all the Jews, including the converts of ALL Jewish streams. Israel is NOT an Ortodox private camp, it belongs to the whole of Klal Israel!
15. #12 Leonard
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.14.10)
You have a very narrow and fundamentalist perspective on Judaism. You want to reduce the religion to a ritualistic understanding of Judaism. Its all about you and your rabbis. Where is the God of the universe who created man in His image? No doubt if Moshe Rabbeinu was here today he would not agree with you.
16. the truth

17. #15 Yehudi
Aryeh ,   Bat Ayin   (07.14.10)
God is right in there, the very God that created Goyim too, did He ever command Goyim to convert to Judaism? God tolerates non Jews as well and loves them as they are. Are you inferring that Non-Jews are inferior? God gave non Jews 7 Mitzvot, and by and large most have a hard enough time keeping them, why would they want to accept 613 Mitzvot? There are some honest non Jews who do make the commitment and become very good Jews, sadly enough even better than many born Jews, but that is a small number. Judaism is not a missionary religion and one does not need to be a Jew to have "salvation" or to have a share in the world to come
18. Look back in Jewish history
tzipih ,   israel   (07.14.10)
...Look back in 'Jewish' History and this Bill would have to 'Halackhikly speaking be annulade, because it simply goes against many if not the mayority of Jewish heritage, the 'New' rules or walls protecting Jewish religious traditions are simply killing the Jewish culture and making Judaism into a completely other religion, and a not so succefull one if you analized the concequencies of this new sort of haredi conspirecy. 50 yeas a go most of the american Jewry where not haredim at all, their children are now running the Rabbinute and extremist and some corrupted selfhating Jews or maybe not so much of Jews endeed. A Jew it's a Man /Woman of knowledge and ethics and values that transform reality into a better way of existance for it self and for other , generaly speaking. Now Jews know very well that if this its all about bringing the Mechiach and building a Temple, well then it has to be clear that the Father has to be decended from the line of King Dovid and so forward, and for the holiness of the Haridim, why dont they clean up their communities from all kind of transgression before thinking so badly about other people/jews. There are after all 70 different ways to approache Judaism not only one way, so what do they want, just Power and start a Jewish Vatican in Jerusalem. Please G'd No!!! It's enough of dubble morality and besides this Issue it's just killing religious life, Im almost totally sure and convince by now that most of the people that have issues with Jews by making categories of them Are really not jewish at all. Jews recognice other jews today, you dont know if it is an arab dress as a jewish rabbi/woman or a simply a Nazi. So how are we going to have this. What about everybody including some people in the Rabbinute making Tshuvah, I think they need it more than their ignoranimus brothers and sisters that surly have a lot to give and learn.
19. 17 Where is your basis for goyim keeping ONLY 7 Mitzwot?
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.15.10)
That contradicts BOTH Torah and Talmud. You're correct that Torah doesn't require conversion... but that's because acceptance of the geir (conversion) who commits to follow Torah is a mitzwot that Israel is commanded to obey, not for the geir to obey!!! Conversion is not within the control of the geir (nor should it be) and Torah never requires anything beyond doing one's utmost to keep Torah according to halakhah. The geir can do that whether or not Israel obeys the mitzwot to accept the geir. In the first century, interaction with gentiles beyond business (or as demanded by the Roman occupiers) was prohibited by the rabbis. Thus, goyim who wanted to learn Torah weren't permitted to interact with Torah teachers. To provide a remedy for goyim desiring to learn Torah, the 7 Noakhide Laws are first documented as instituted in the first century C.E. by the Netzarim (Ency. Jud., "Noachide Laws," 12:1190ff)--as a temporary "Torah trainee" status enabling them to learn Torah ENROUTE TO FULL TORAH OBSERVANCE AND CONVERSION; NEVER an acceptable permanent state. Talmud discusses whether the limit of the geir status should be 12 or 24 months. Talmud further describes geirim at numerous levels of observance as they progressed toward the conversion threshold of full observance. NOWHERE does Talmud or Torah even remotely suggest contradicting the multitude of Scriptures that explicitly and unambiguously condemn ALL goyim (which does not include the geir(ah) doing his or her utmost to learn and keep ALL of the mitzwot Torah according to Halakhah) on Yom ha-Din. "Benei Noakh" refers--in Talmud, Scripture and all ancient Judaic literature--to ALL sons of Noakh; all goyim, including Israel; NEVER to any "special" category of "in-between" "eternally saved" goyim. The "third option" of "Noakhides" is a fabrication of modern rabbis contradicting historical Halakhah. Geirim (those who do their utmost to learn and keep all of Torah non-selectively and according to Halakhah), whether Israel obeys the mitzwah to accept the geir(ah) or not, are Torah reverers, not goyim. But there are only two sides: Torah and goyim. This leaves the question: what about "Jews" by racist criterion who abandon the Torah and Halakhah recognizable to Mosheh Rabeinu, the Neviyim, Ribi Hileil, Ribi Yehoshua (NOT Yesh"u!) and Rambam (after that, the trail begins running a lot colder)? Cite your basis for "saved Benei Noakh of 7 laws" in Scripture. You'll find the "Noakhides' portion in Olam ha-Ba" is obscenely frail and transparently fabricated, leaving a lot of poor goyim misled into putting their faith in fabrications of rabbis instead of Torah. Further, if you'll study history, you'll find that the canard that Judaism isn't a missionary religion is a product of Roman suppression that contradicts the Torah the Mosheh Rabeinu and the Neviyim knew up until the final days of the Beit ha-Miqdash. In this subject, you (and a LOT of others) are echoing Roman goyim doctrine forced on Jews on pain of death (and only later rationalized and internalized), not original Torah doctrine. Back to the Torah and Halakhah of Mosheh Rabeinu! It's the only Way out of your (collective) self-conflicting morass. Or you can yet again point to the hated straw man bogeyman, ignoring what you don't want to deal with, and plunk your heads back in the sand. 20. How sad, indeed.
Yehuda ,   Cincinnati USA   (07.15.10)
21. False conversions
Jew ,   Israel   (07.17.10)
I know several people who converted Conservative outside of Israel and observe NOTHING of Judaism. No kashrut, no Shabbat, no modest clothing, no Jewish dayschool, etc etc. There is really no difference from their lifestyle then and now. I don't consider them Jews at all. Judaism is Torah, period.
22. too false convertions
sussi ,   israel   (07.19.10)
before doing tshuvah I was concervative, and Im sorry to tell you that many concervative people do keep kosher go to shul keeps mitzvos and observe other part of judaism with some differencies from the haredim but still, they support religious communities with money, indirectly of course, by supporting Israel, and the do know waht it means to be a Jew and deal with antisemitism and other issues that are very actual today around the globe. So for sure there are some convertions that are false, but so is the case of orthodox convetions, when they pass missionaries as jews in Israel today, and what about religious people that lieve the haridim life style are they not Jews anymore? and what about all the rest of ecceptions, it's the Rabbis and the Rabbinute really sure they are helping all Jews or only some Jews friends and so on. It is not fear to speak so irresponsible about other Jews.
