Is a born Jew still a one if he/she converts to Christianity? Would they be welcome in this new Jewish only Israel? If many of the Palestinians converted to Judaism would they then be welcome? Is this move about religion or race/tribe of people?

What #14 meant when saying Israeli Arabs do not pay taxes is the following. As G*d's chosen people, we the far right wingers of Israel have been directed by G*d to lie and cheat and steal. So, since claiming that Israeli Arabs do not pay taxes supports my view of why Israeli Arabs should have no rights, I have the right to say it, even though it is untrue. And anyone that tries to expose my lie is an anti-semite.

There two individuals I love to see living in Israel :Shulamit Aloni and Uri Avneri. These two turned Israel haters suffer every minute and everyday to witness how Israel stands to its detractors. I love it. Read their writings and comments not once did either hater tried to have a dialogue or try to interact with the ones they disagree with. So Ms Aloni get fried in your own oil, stay with us and suffer as you surely are. Israel despite your ilk and the ones like Uri Avneri the other dynosaure, will prevail. Have a sad day Ms Aloni

Yo! Scotty from Dallas! Why should America and the west suck up to the non-Democratic Arabs? Are you that hooked on the thick, black hydrocarbon drug that you keep selling your principles to hop into bed with anybody who'll provide you a fix? Are you lower on the morality scale than the EU? Is what motivates you so much the buck and so little religion or moral/ethical people? Sure, we have problems with racists and the like (heck, you Yanks were two-faced liars about your own democracy for almost 200 years!), but are you so ready to rape your own ideology you'd abandon Israel in order to prostitute yourself some more for oil?

As a youth growing up in Brooklyn NY I had to pledge allegiance to the United States of America every school morning. There is nothing undemocratic about a pledge of allegiance. It is about time that Israel as in other countries should institute a pledge of allegiance. Those unwilling to pledge allegiance should be banned from citizenship and its benefits.

My issue with #17 is the wrongful use of the words "liberal democracy" within a state defined by religion. This is abnormal. If Israel wants to be a recognized democracy rather than a Jewocracy. Then 4 million occupied people have to have the vote immediately. And your legal apparatus has to recognize and define the word "Israeli". You are not a nation state until you country has defined borders. We have waited a long time for this. Picking and choosing international declarations mean nothing while 160 UN resolutions are ignored. If a British lord declared Israel null and void today, would you pay attention and pack your bags and leave? I doubt that. I prefer to remain in the Diaspora. (It's more democratic and preferable to making allegiance to a State that cannot define itself legally)

Apart that pledging allegiance every morning in school is really a waste of time and stupid and boring for all kids, the point of this article was not to pldge or not to pledge allegiance. The point was to whom or to what pledging allegiance has to be done by ALL citizens. But in one point I agree with you though, citizens have not only rights but also duties and responsibilities. The question remains : To whom/what they have to pledge allegiance and secondly, are they being forced to do so or are the citizens doing it by their own will

I would have liked Shulamit Aloni to write a similar paper in Iran, Syria or Saudi. She lives in La La Land while the rest of the Middle East is a Jungle. People who come to America and become citizens pledge their alligience to America. They have differences in religion,ethnicity etc. but still they do it. Some do not want to do it and they may never be citizens, but still they pay taxes. In Europe when one becomes citizen a similar declaration takes place. In New Zealand no immigrant can become a citizen. Shulmit Aloni reflect those who believe that Israel should self destruct. Shulamith, please read Hamas Covenant!!!!

The Balfour Declaration is incorporated in the Palestine Mandate. That Mandate was the basis of Israeli Statehood through the passage of UN General Assembly Res.181 in Nov. 1947. In the Mandate it says"it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine," If a non-Jew refuses to cite the pledge, what is their punishment? Why would an Israeli Muslim pledge allegiance to a Jewish State? What was the value of Israel, in their application for UN membership in 1949 ,saying they would scrupulously protect the rights of the non-Jewish minority? What is Israel's word worth to the rest of the world?

Why can't a Jewish state be as democratic as an Irish state, or a German state, or a Swedish state, etc.? The word "Jew" comes from Judah, or Judea, a tribe and nation. To be a Jew means being a member of a tribe with a tribal homeland. That does not inherently deny other citizens of basic civil or religious rights. Nobody stops Shulamit from converting to Christianity or Islam, or being an atheist. I don't understand the problem here.
