31. 75% more people at coffee bars confirm my original statement
Talula ,   Israel   (07.20.10)
I just went to get lunch and the shopping mall is PACKED to breaking point. Now how can that be if 75% of the population are fasting? Like I said, they just wanted a day off to be with the kids.
32. weird but thst what's jews r doing today
ghostq   (07.20.10)
75% fast on 9th in Av. if that is not crying to father god for help than what is it? anyway I think you look at it the wrong way, people who feel insecure turn to faith, but people who knows they don't need all this rituals, but every one got his own freedom to practise as they please as long as they don't hurt each other. (y am I sounding like a preast today I have no idea).
33. Non-fasting just represents ignorance of Jewish traditions !
Yisrael ,   Jerusalem , ISRAEL   (07.20.10)
Those that do not participate in Jewish traditions just separate themselves from Jewish history and tradition. They are basically hedonists and worship themselves, with little or no capacity for self reflection and contemplation in a Jewish context. Given the opportunity, they will grab the first visa out of here. Bye !
34. שלמה
Yossef ,   חוץ לארץ   (07.20.10)
Arab fast 12 hours for Ramadan, isn't it? Tisha BAv fasta, as well as Kippur fas,t is 25 hours fast. It is hard, especially in summer. I am part of the 22% who fast on 9 באב and this allows me to talk as a Jew ;-) P.S. Why don't you convert to judaism? It could be a good solution, no? I'd love to go to my favorite synagogue with you :-)
35. #29 Yes I have a choice and so do you
Talula ,   Israel   (07.20.10)
My choice is to live here in a country I love - your choice is to live there and dictate to us - So ZIP IT and butt out!!!
36. What are you talking about, Talula, #28??
John ,   Europe   (07.20.10)
OF COURSE you can watch TV??? The rules for Tisha B'Av are the FAST rules, not Shabbat rules or Yom Tov rules? Rules of the fast: 1) Nothing on mouth - no food, no water. 2) No washing - you can wash your mouth by some opinions in case of great discomfort and you can wash your teeth, just do not swallow water 3) No rubbing oil/creams for pleasure - deodorants are allowed 4) No sex 5) No leather shoes 6) No shit (just kidding, only 5 upper laws apply) Therefore, for TbA, you CAN go to work and work - I am, for example, now at work - and you CAN cook, and you CAN buy things, watch TV etc...
37. #32 It isn't the right path
Josh   (07.20.10)
75% fasting. If 100% of the people cryied out to G-d via the golden calf, what was the big deal? "if that is not crying to father god for help than what is it? " If you read Torah you can answer the question and see why the 75% who are doing it because they were told to are infact validating the judgement against themsleves and proving they do not love G-d because they do not read nor care to follow His instructions. If they had they would not be crying to begin with. If a father said come out of the rain child of mine and I will give you shelter and a hot meal and the rebellious child stood in the rain and refused, what does the father care if the child causes his own hunger? The child must learn not to test the father's rage. There is a path and only one path and that path is Torah as Moses and G-d intended it. Come out of the rain. Choosing death, fasting like some other middle east religion on a holiday Moses never gave (raises pagan origin suspicions) and whinning about it is just down right annoying.
38. #36 You forgot no laughing as well
Talula ,   Israel   (07.20.10)
I don't follow Tish B'Av and I was denied a laugh last night because the comedy channel was also in mourning and stopped broadcasting. OK, let's move on and discuss the no sex issue – I find much amusement in this one. So, you can’t have sex with your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/mistress because two temples were destroyed over 2,000 years ago? Say it a few times, find the reasoning behind it - then tell me it’s normal. I’ll be waiting...
39. With people like Talula
Jo ,   London   (07.20.10)
"A breakdown of the results shows that haredim, religious, and traditionalists mainly dislike Arabs, whereas seculars mainly dislike haredim" One would have thought with people like Talula, the religious would mainly HATE the secular. Now we can see which group promotes unity.
40. to #37 Josh they didn't cried via golden culf
ghostq   (07.20.10)
the golden culf was to thank the pagan god for the lucky eascape, they didn't had faith in moses. you said enough with the child analogy? r you ok, moses got no connection to the temple, or 9th in AV. you have no idea what is Torah, I bet you never opened the books(plural) in yourlife. and it is summer, what rain? there is heat wave 30C. very very hot. oh heat must be the heat,
41. to #38 Talula every one got grieving customs,
ghostq   (07.20.10)
I doubt that in (got forbid) personal grive you run to have sex afterward, mourning is personal and even you know when someone mourne you don't think on sex, unless you r sex adict.
42. The reason is commemoration, of course!
John ,   Europe   (07.20.10)
Look, let's say - and I pray G-d that He doesn't get any cute ideas! - that you have a death in your family. What will you have? You are in pain, your grief wants out. You will cry, of course. You will not want anything around you to make you laugh and cheer you up - since you want to pass through the process of mourning. So you have now 4 of the things that are ruled FOR TbA - no sex (pleasure, if you don't have pleasure with your gf/wf... I suggest you divorce. :) ), no creams/tonics (pleasure), no leather shoes (cause they WERE the nicest shoes and most comfortable), no bathing... Now, the only thing remaining is food/drink. This is a derivate from Torah, in the eve of Yom Kippour, when G-d commands that you shall not eat/drink. The trick is - try to do it for 12 hours and you will see how you feel. Your pain will AMPLIFY, your body will feel discomfort. What I wrote you is an INSTITUTED MOURNING, like you have in other civilizations. Some civilizations have ritual self-inflicting cuts (specially prohibited in Torah!). Some have open chest and people going around it (prohibited :) ). As every society, civilization, wanted to have a special markings, just for occasion and just for the members of the occasion, so has Judaism. And fast - this is the form of instituted mourning. So, members of Judaism mourn the Temple, "the most loved place ever", in from of instituted mourning. You ask me should you do it? THIS IS YOUR CHOICE, but if asked for my advice - yes. This helps preserve Judaism, as instituted religion and Jews as it members alive. And is it normal? What, instituted religion and it's laws? Well, yes... :) I live in Christian country. On Easter, everything is filled with these shitty rabbits and angels that don't even get a percentage of revenue for showing their faces everywhere :), but it is their instituted religion's norms and laws. Just do not judge it - judges are not happy people. :)
43. #16 Hate does indeed bring hate.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (07.20.10)
And I find the same kind of voices from the Haredi public as Avi's on occasion, just from the other direction - talking about the evils of seculars and secularism, or just those who heard Sagi and others like them, and thus having the conclusion that there's no point in engaging the secular public, that they (the seculars) hate all Haredim so why bother. I don't hold a very high regard for Me'a She'arim's Eda Haredit for the former part of the above - at least not the official leadership and their lackluster approach to the truly deranged sects like Neturei Karta - ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. I'm fasting, as you likely surmised. That you're not is your choice, hardly something I or any religious Jew can force upon you.
44. Ignorant
sam ,   israel   (07.20.10)
Talula of Israel you are extremely ignorant and to even write out your feelings is just plain stupidity. The first thing to do is some research and than you can tell everyone what you think. Today Tish B Av is the saddest day in the Jewish calendar and yes you are not allowed to work until noon time because it is such a sad day. You have chosen or born in the land of Israel and this is a Jewish country. Believe it or not the state has more say than the actual Jewish religion in this country but go to some Arab countries and you would go to jail if you did not celebrate a holiday like Tish b Av. So go on cry about the comedy channel but as a Jewish man i give them two thumbs up for not airing it because someone in the studio had common sense that it is the saddest day in Jewish history and we are not talking about any synagogue or Jewish grave site destroyed but we are talking about g-d's home which was built twice and destroyed twice and as religious Jews we intend to do everything possible to cry our hearts out to ask g-d to build the third temple so we can go on to the next world - the world to come which is going to be a world full of g-dly revelations and a peaceful world unless you want to stay in this horrible world where you have your neighbors throwing missiles and shooting at you or you can go to america or england where people will scream at you for being Jewish so the choice is yours you can be ignorant and live a meaningless life or you can do a little research and add some knowledge to your Jewish identity.
45. #27 Like your hatred of all Orthodox Jews, you mean.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (07.20.10)
Josh, you spend so much time trying to prove to us all how wrong we are - us who actually have a grounding of documentation and tradition. And you pound away at us and our beliefs with your partial and literalist reading of the Torah, use false claims at times, outright insults and lies on the other... Perhaps our lack of respect for you is that, while you converted, it isn't to anything we remotely recognize as Jewish. Paint an elephant with stripes and call it a zebra, but a zebra it isn't - in the same manner, your minority path of One True Arrogant Literal Judaism is no zebra, I'm afraid. Sounds more like a sub-sect of Protestant Christianity, really, minus the Jesus.
46. 5 M. Hartley: History repeats. Those who forget the past are
Rivkah   (07.21.10)
doomed to repeat it. The Jews are determined never to be in a holocaust again without defenses. The Armenians are the same way. They never forget the genocide under the Turks and are always prepared for another attempt to annihilate them. They ain't going down or out without a hell of a fight and neither are the Jews. How sad you lost your husband and you are 72 and miss him. Sad? Yes. If he made you miserable instead of making you happy, you would have sought the Lord for solace instead of becoming an atheist.
47. more arabs then jews
DAVID ASLESON ,   MINNEAPOIS MINNESOTA   (07.21.10)
why would you when there is more arabs then jews in your country
48. #41 IT HAPPENED TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talula ,   Israel   (07.21.10)
GET OVER IT ALREADY!!!!!!!
49. M Hartley @ # 5
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.21.10)
When something sad happens in a person's life , he/she should always think that "the show must go on" , Sometimes even turn this sad page . Your late husband was right , you have'nt to spend all you years crying , it makes it only worse . You should continue as in your last sentence , remembering fine moments . Regarding Auschwitz , i prefer to see there young Israelis , with the Israeli flag , proving that we survived in a great way , that they could not annihilate us . I will not thank a "god" that i survived , "he" was certainly NOT involved in my rescue . But we should remember those disasters , be it only for the future generations .
50. To #46
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.21.10)
Where and when did I say that anyone should forget? There's a big difference between remembering and mourning. I'm much more inclined to go along with this Jewish saying: "They tried to kill us. We survived. Let's eat." Also, where do you get the idea that I'm an Atheist? Not subscribing to religion doesn't make one an Atheist. You can wallow in your misery and whine to your Lord all you want to, but if my husband had made me miserable, he wouldn't have been my husband very long. I don't do miserable real well. Besides, God gave me the gift of laughter and I intend to use it.
51. To #49 Charles
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.21.10)
I agree with remembering and I can understand your feelings about God. I happen to believe in God, because I have to have somebody to rant at, when things don't make sense and make promises to, when I hear "tornado warnings," even though I run like hell away from these trees, when I do hear it. At least, you don't go around beating yourself over the head, assuming that all the disasters are your fault for not living right, praying enough, or whatever. Most of all, and indications to the contrary notwithstanding, I hope God has a sense of humor or I'll be seriously sunk :-)
