The "Holocaust industry" in the USA certainly exists and has consistently used Holocaust as a political lever with every US administration since WW2. It is responsible for devaluing the lessons of the Holocaust as a result and also for carrying out self-perpetuating activities in which 'the good of the survivors' is used to access funds which haven't always reached survivors. In Israel we haven't exactly covered ourselves in glory with the way we dealt with survivors and finances. BUT when a great film-maker embarks on the kind of project Stone is engaged with and describes it the way he has, then you cannot say the Holocaust industry deserves all the blame. That he trots out the now well publicised Meersheimer Walt contention that the Jews run US Mid-East foreign policy and adds the spicy suggestion that they run the US press too, is extremely worrying, if not because it's not substantiated. This is well beyond Stone's need to publicise an upcoming film by courting enough controversy to raise audience figures. Challenge the Holocaust industry - OK. Make ridiculous claims about a US wide Jewish press and power conspiracy - not OK. The question remains however, what is to be done about this? The answer isn't simple and Stone knows it.

Though he could have used a little more tact with his comments, and a little less generalization, his comments regarding Hitler and the Russians are factually correct. Hitler was propped up by industrialists in Germany and around the world, including the USA where Prescott Bush (Dubbya's grand-pappy) was instrumental in providing funds (through Brown Brothers Harriman) to Hitler's regime because they saw him as a bulwark against communism. As for Russia, it suffered more casualties than all the other countries (axis and allies) combined! So yeah, they did suffer the most, and they received no attention or gratitude from the West since. Had Hitler defeated the Soviets, he would have mopped up Britain and Europe would still be under the Third Reich. Lastly, Stone is right when he implies that the story surrounding Hitler's rise to power, and his support base, is largely ignored in favour of showing the suffering of the Holocaust victims. That doesn't diminish the suffering of the innocents of the Holocaust, but proper historical perspective is required.

Anyone who fails to recognize that the primary target, the most important target, of the Nazis was the Jews, simply doesn't know history. That other peoples, including the Germans themselves, suffered, and suffered badly, is of no question. They did. But, the Nazi mind and machine was driven by virulent anti-Semitism. They hated Jews. Everyone else who suffered was "collateral damage".

What would the extremist religious do without scaring followers into a controlled environment?
