I've been a supporter through the American Friends of Technion for the last few years and hope to visit the campus on my next trip. Considering how much they delivery for the country, it's sad the government fails to provide the support they deserve; there's only so much of the shortfall we "friends" can make up. There are, of course, other Israeli institutions that do fine work in the sciences - Hebrew U, Tel Aviv U and BGU,for example - but they're disgraced by their Humanities and Social Sciences departments.

but personally, as the mother of an MIT grad, I am pleased they took first place. Of note, Caltech (California Institute of Technology) took 4th place, the alma mater of my other son. MIT is a great school, but from a mom who knows both schools intimately, Caltech rules. As a side bar, Caltech has been number one in US rankings, a first ever (not even MIT achieved this feat, beating out the trio of Harvard, Yale & Princeton) for an 'engineering powerhouse'-according to US News & World Reports. Aspiring techies-if you can get into Caltech, go there!!

Of course we can't compare to the academic achievements of Spain or the Basque territories! Oh wait, you don't have any of those universities in any remotely high spot! The fact is that, many do not or refuse to realize that you have to look at University rankings in a very segmented fashion. Basically you have to look at each department or general area rather than the whole. It is not logical for example that the Technion or Caltech be compared to the London School of Economics. The former two focus on science and engineering while the latter is focused on political science and economics. Its not even comparing Apples and Oranges its comparing computer technology to law books. You cannot do it. Hence this comparison in the technology ranking is absolutely outstanding! It is also important that it shows that Israel can compete on this technological level equal to Technical Universities such as TU Munich, TU Denmark, TU Delft, RWTH Aachen, the Ecole's, ETH, and so on. Also what is important to consider that Israel with far less wealth and stability compared to a country such as... Spain, is able to produce such a high level of science above the aforementioned country is something to be astounded by this accomplishment. Maybe Spain could take a few lessons from Israel on how to build a good University system.

My first point refers to the title of the "news" which is quite missleading- technion 38 among top universities. Then the title of the article clarifies the point by adding technology. Now, since when Spain may be considered as scientifical gauge to measure university systems. Frankly, I have not mentioned Spain, and it would be rather sad if Israel would start to compare itself with Spain in Science. Honestly speaking, Technion is not such a big thing, for example Imperial college is of a simmilar structure, but still is one of the leading world universities, as is caltech and MIT which I have mentioned as the last three are all technological institution. I have not mentioned the LSE. Maybe the title should have said: The HUJI ( hebrew university of Jerusalem) has made it AGAIN to the firts 100, or say Weitzman institute, has also made it this time, and not to schwitz about technion, which is not anywhere close. Laila Tov. Finally, give Spain a couple of decades of good funding and it will beat Israel not only in football , basket and tennis, but in science as well.

Consider that after you kicked your Jews out some 500 years ago you sustained yourselves only by theft and conquest. Yes, quite a heritage. But let's bring it up to date: The latest OECD Factbook shows Israel at #1 in R&D as a percentage of GDP (4.86%). Spain is way down at 1.35%. Or consider triadic patent families earned by Israel (494) compared to Spain (236). Considering your population is six times that of Israel, you should be more humble.

Have you seen me boast? I am probably more Jewish than u are and not even because of that I boast... at any rate, most of patents are "luft gesheft" U should rather look at UN development index. As to "theft and conquest" please, be careful where you want to drive this discussion to, for this is not very safe direction in Israel's case.

A Basque would not make the point you are suggesting. Really, you can't be serious in attempting to draw a comparison between Israel and Spain. Everything Spain is and has was a result in of theft and genocide. After the gold shipments stopped, Spain returned to it former status as a sick backwater in Europe. Care to evaluate Franco or the ratline support of fleeing Nazis? Stick to your status as Tapas capital of the world!
