2. It makes sense, in a sick way.
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (08.16.10)
First we have an increased possibility of "direct talks", so Hamas starts some action last month. Then Hamas, just the other day, issued a statement against the "direct Talks", now it's followed up by another attempted attack at the Gaza border. If we are to have pre-conditions...and I think it's simply a delaying tactic by Abbas...I do have one exception, Abbas must guarantee Hamas will honor any agreement made by the PA, or Abbas must guarantee to disarm Hamas. If the Palestinians are truly in a civil war...and I think that is the case...I just don't understand how direct talks would help. Unless the PA makes agreements, honors them, and Israel lets the WB, go completely independent i.e. removes all roadblocks, eases travel between Israel and the WB etc.. If Abbas can fully control the WB, arrest the Hamas terrorists in the WB...only if they attempt terrorist acts...make the WB a virtual wonderland of economic development, It could have the effect of turning the population in Gaza against Hamas. The one problem I see, in this, the WB just announced all the improvements they have made in the last 12 months. If you noticed Hamas DID NOT make any such announcements, WHY??? We have all seen the recent video's and photo's of the: 1) New Water Park for kids, 2) the New, 4th Luxury Hotel, that just opened in Gaza, 3) the NEW Luxury MALL, that just opened, 4) The well stocked FOOD COURTS, filled with a wide variety and ABUNDANCE of food products. 5) The NEW Luxury Restaurants that have opened over the last year and half. WHY COULDN'T HAMAS MAKE THOSE ANNOUNCEMENTS. Mainly because it reveals there is NO crisis in Gaza. But what worries me, is the foresight Hamas has, they anticipate the PA making a deal with Israel. So in a sense, Hamas has made a preemptive move, they know the West Bankers standard of living will go up, and surpass the Gazans. So they have made improvements in Gaza, so the discontent among their own people can be controlled. It's a clever, and well thought out strategy by Hamas. I give them credit, they are great chess players.

I take it you are completely misinformed based on your comment. First of all, what is your definition of a "luxury" mall? Based on the pictures I saw, the mall wasn't luxurious at all. Have you been to your local mall or galleria? There is absolutely no comparison Secondly, the situation in Gaza is VERY bad. Just like in any city or town there are areas dedicated to the rich and areas dedicated to the poor. I suggest you take a stroll through the poor areas in Gaza. No electricity, no sewage systems, starving children, dirty water, the list goes on. Just know that while you are laying back in your air conditioned home, sitting in your Lazy boy, sipping on your latte and watching TV on your new LCD that the people in Gaza are suffering due to this inhumane blockade. Justice will prevail, it's only a matter of time. Crimes never go unpunished and eventually things will change. P.S. Abbas is not a legitimate representative for the Palestinian people and never will be.

6. #4 - speaking of "misinformed", Gaza is not in US
William ,   Israel   (08.16.10)
So comparing the life of Gazans and their infrastructure with that of the US is purposely disingenuous. Their mall may not look as nice as your galleria but for them it IS luxury, so are the hotels there. I suggest you reverse the statement you made to sound like this - "in all cities there are slums and poor areas, no matter how much money is pumped into it or how good the infrastructure is" Case in point - CNN, BBC, Maan, and Financial Times all produced articles about Gaza and all came away with the conclusion that NO crisis exists in Gaza. They didn't visit the malls or hotels, they visited open-air food stands and people's homes. Starving children? where?? Dirty water? Sure, they over-pumped the aquifer even after Israel and Intl community warned them not to. No sewage systems? Hard to move sewage when the pipes are ripped up to make rockets. No electricity? Blame Hamas. Israel provides 60% of their infrastructure needs, while Hamas is known for shutting off their generators over squabbles with Fatah. - outside of Northeast Gaza, the rest of Gaza is pretty average. Only NE Gaza is poor and had been since Egypt was ruling it. Abbas IS the legitimate rep of the "Palestinians". Why? Because according to PLO Legislation, which Hamas agreed to, the president can dissolve parliament if it becomes unfit to lead. Hamas may have won an election but they launched an illegal bloody coup that killed scores of innocents. So, there you have it. Facts on which to base your "justice"...though, your own bias and ignorance seems to have helped you make up your mind early.
7. #5 - price tag for killing terrorists laying a bomb?
William ,   Israel   (08.16.10)
Ok, and here's your change....
8. to Nate:
Jennie ,   US/Israel   (08.17.10)
Your post is pathetic,Nate. How is it Mark's fault, that he is a man of a civilized world, sharing the truth of the matters happening in gaza region for about 2 decades now...Looks, that it is you, who is missinformed (Big Time).... Yes, life in gaza now for many gazans is not so bad...I know for a fact about many of their luxury homes and restaurants...Cant say about the standards of their malls, but one thing is sure: they are in no deficiency of food, clothing or entertainment. While in Israel most recently, I watched a news clip about a new very modern movie theater being opened these days in Gaza... But I would like to share with you and other posters another fact, I experienced last week, while visiting in Israel : I heard a radio announcement, that a kassam has exploded in the Shaar Hanegev Regional council and nobody was injured.Pretty routine daily announcement. On that day I was traveling to Sderoth to visit with my relatives and asked them about that incident. They told me, that the qasam has destroyed the only Recriational Center in Shar Hanegev, making a direct hit to its swimming pool, used for therapeutical and recriational swimming for the needy Sderoth residents...I can't understand, why the Israeli media didn't send a crew of reporters to show the nation about such a destruction ? Are daily kassams shot from gaza to a sovereign Israeli territory is not considered an act of war anymore and is not worthy of reporting in more detail ?! So somehow I don't feel sorry for gazans, most of whom dedicate their whole lives to destroy my country and my people...Also, I just can't forget their dancing orgy's on 9/11, while we where mourning and in shock of what the islamic jihadists did to USA...A little reflection on history, would do you a lot of good.... BTW, not that I give a damn, but do you know who is the legit.representative of pali people ?
9. #4; Nate, We agree, sort of?
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (08.17.10)
Your right about two things: 1) Your description of my lifestyle, and I enjoy my air conditioned home, latte and my new LCD TV, so what? What does that have to do with price of tea in China? 2) I can take you to a poor ghetto in any city in the U.S., the kids are hungry, they live in filthy conditions sharing their homes with Rats and cockroaches, again so what? To quote you: "Secondly, the situation in Gaza is VERY bad. Just like in any city or town there are areas dedicated to the rich and areas dedicated to the poor" So Gaza it "just like any city or town" in the world, right? And that's the point!! I certainly wouldn't judge the U.S. by the poorest communities that exist there. So your argument goes down the drain. Hamas has had 5 years to improve living conditions, and, apparently they have to some degree. Otherwise they wouldn't have an expanding middle class able to afford the luxuries I described. Nate you say "Justice will prevail", maybe, although wherther Hamas represents an ideal of justice is questionable. Since they have no freedoms, little things, like freedom of the press, freedom of speech, equal rights for women, a justice system that protects individual rights, freedom of religion etc., you know little things like that.
10. Rockets fired after IDF kills
Robert Cabitt ,   Boston, MA, USA   (08.17.10)
The rockets will continue to rain on Israel until they elect a prime minister who has the will and the courage to drive the Palestinians and Hamas out of Gaza and the West Bank. When George Bush gives back his Crawford,Texas ranch to the Native Americans is when peace will come to Israel. To the victor goes the spoils. Americans killed thousands of Indians during the conquest of the United States. The Indians that survived were placed in concentration camps euphemistically described as reservations where alcoholism and unemployment reigns. Since the Bureau of Indians Affairs has granted gambling casino licenses, some Indian tribes have prospered. Maybe gambling casinos are the solution for the Palestinians.
11. #8 - Jennie - sad, but the politicians control Israel media
William ,   Israel   (08.17.10)
The Left use it to push their ideologic agenda, no matter how impractical or unrealistic it is, and the ruling party use it to spin information. What if the media was honest and reported the destroyed pool in Sderot? The Left would rally in the streets saying only giving Arabs everything will we be safe...while the more normal citizens would be rallying in the streets for the PM to get off his ass and go kick the crap out of Hamas once and for all. The Minister of Finance would have to cough up $$$ to build a new pool ASAP and Barak would actually have to defend Sderot from kassams (he's better at retreating anyway). So you see - if the truth were known, politicians would be seen as inept and have to actually do work. Sadly, we share this trait with Hamas and PA and their media spin.

13. Hey Mark #4: As several posters have
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (08.17.10)
already intelligently critiqued your post, I would only add that the biggest problem faced by the normal Gazan is the Hamas leadership. And if you happen to be affiliated with Fatah, or thought to be affiliated, then you are at risk for imprisonment and torture or, what's worse, kneecapping or even informal execution by being shot or thrown off from the roof of a four story building. All of the preceeding has been on record. Perhaps you would consider this "alternative" viewpoint, Nate.
14. to #5 but it was pali initiative, y place bomb near

15. Nate, another American sucker for Pal propaganda
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (08.17.10)
Nate claims: "No electricity, no sewage systems, starving children, dirty water, the list goes on. " 1) Yes, there is electricity 2) Yes, there are sewage systems 3) Nobody is starving in Gaza. 4) No, when you turn on the tap in Gaza clean water does indeed come out. Nate, any reason for you regurgitating the propaganda? Yes, there are electricity supply problems and water problems, but there is indeed electricity and water and sewage systems in Gaza and they all work (sure, the electricity is not on all the time, but go tell Hamas to spend their money on generators, not missiles). And, of course, there is not a single case of anybody starving to death in Gaza. You, sir, are simply a propaganda tool, and a poor one at that.
16. #7,14 he wasn't even proven operative to call him terrorist
observer   (08.17.10)
have you read the article which states "It remains unclear who was behind the blast", Unless you think that an operative would not stand by the implanted explosive device while the IDF comb the area, but a terrorist would not.
17. To william-#11
Jennie ,   Us/Israel   (08.17.10)
Thank you very much for your wise and true response...You expressed what I feel for too long...Among other things, I am the product of both sides of Israel's history: the rebirth of victorious Jewish land and the appeaser of sworn enemies, who keeps giving up land for more war and terror... Keep up your good work here.
