A year is only 12 months. A year didn't seem so long ago...it was then (last summer) that Israel and the State Department were giving Iran "until Christmas" or "until the end of 2009" to halt enrichment and allow IAEA inspectors back into the country. That date came and went. Now, in August 2010, we have Bushehr "going active" and Iran apparently in possession of some S-300 missiles. So, perhaps 12 months is a long time...for Iran to bolster its defenses and to acquire a bomb or two or twenty...

Iran is not trying hard to build a nuke or 2 now but to get ability for many later if needed. While that give West some time but makes Iran a greater threat down the road. N. Korea could build Iran about 1 nuke per month(4 every 4months) if Iran is willing to pay in uranium fuel rods and cash, since changing out fuel rods every 3 or 4 months would be needed to extract plutonium.

Nobody gives them security guaranties. Israel has nucelar weapons. To be untouchable Iran will aquire nukes in 1 year or 10 years. The west can solve the problem, pressure Israel and surrounding countries to make peace contract and to ban nuclear weapons from the complete region and provide security guarantees for all contries which are not try to build nuclear weapons. The strategic importance of Israel for the USA will changing, there are other big problems coming (China, Pakistan). The US has already accepted a nuclear Iran.

Iran, as a nuclear power represents a threat far beyond the Middle-East. When a nuclear Iran announces to surrounding oil states to surrender, or face death, does that serve to further world peace? Does nuking Israel, and turning the region into an inhospitable radioactive wasteland serve the Palestinians? They couldn't inhabit a radioactive Palestine, so how does nuclear Iran serve the cause of the Palestinian state? Supporting Iran, in its' current iteration is as intelligent as following Hitler or Stalin or Pol Pot. The result is, has been, and will never be a positive one.

The U.S. has not been trustworthy on the Iraninan quest for nuclear weapons. President Bush did not honor his promise to stop the Iranian program. There was a major American Intelligence snafu when in 2007 The US said that the Iranians had halted their program when they had not. PS A year is not a long time. It has been several years that the U.S.. and Israel have been speaking about an imminent nuclear Iran. If they let the coming year go by like the previous ones where will we all be? Bushehr has just go online. There is no real sign that the U.S. has the will to stop Iran. And there is what is even worse with the present Administration no real sign that were the decision made to do this it would be done in open coordination with , and with taking into account the interests of, Israel.
