1. Come on just say it, you'll feel so much better!
dorothy friend ,   tel aviv   (08.23.10)
You think Jews are not only the chosen people, you think they are the Master Race. But not all of us do. Some of us think they are decent people trying to make better lives for their families, doing work that most Israelis for various reasons refuse to do. Why does a rabbi so doubt the attractation of Judaism in a country where the majority are Jews that he is willing to throw out non Jews with all kinds of trumped up stories out of a paranoic fear of intermarriage.
2. How low Lapid can go to get a house keeper?
Ron ,   Tel Aviv   (08.23.10)
3. Good interview of Eli
BJL ,   usa   (08.23.10)
I think Eli is 100% correct. These people must return home when their time is up. Kids or no kids. Otherwise you risk the problem of the USA. We have 30 million Mexicans who know all the loopholes and it is financially and culturally ruining the USA.
4. Yishai is the man
Leib ,   Tel Aviv   (08.24.10)
Good interview. I support the decision of Eli Yishai completely. He is making a brave, unpopular call for the good of the country. Kol hakavod. And I say this as one who does not normally have much time for Shas.
5. Children are children Yair, except the Gush Katif ones?
Etoile ,   Montreal, Canada   (08.24.10)
6. Israeli govt would rather expel chareidim than goyim
Shalom   (08.23.10)
especially as the demography in Israel is becoming more chareidi, religious and Right, which is the greatest threat to the secular and Left.
7. eli ishai you are my guy.
mira ,   israel   (08.24.10)
yahir lapid if you ever go to politics i will never vote for you.
8. Israeli govt would rather expel chareidim than goyim
Shalom   (08.24.10)
especially as the demography in Israel is becoming more chareidi, religious and Right, which is the greatest threat to the secular and Left.
9. The Hypocrasy of Shas
Avi ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
In case anyone has forgotten it was Shas who was involved with bringing the foreign workers here in the first place. Shlomo Benizri of Shas is now serving 4 years in prison for illegal deals with foreign workers accepting millions in bribes from his friend Moshe Sella. Eli Yishai who has been in the position of Interior minister long enough still hasnt produced a clear immagration policy regarding foreign workers even though he saw this sitution developing years ago. He is also quoted as saying " Foreign workers bring diseases such as hepatiis , measels, tuberculosos and Aids, not only is that a complete lie but the health minstry confirmed that the rate of diseases amongst immigrant workers is very low. Eli Yishai is a rascist in the most blatent form and hasnt even the intelligence to admit it. Whose next on his list? single mothers , the elderly ?
10. Israel's "Anchor Babies"
Argaman ,   USA   (08.24.10)
This debate sounds familiar to the one raging here in the USA. There have even been calls to amend the US Consitiution to disqualiy children of illegals. In both the USA and Isreal the proponents of amnesty are using the children as human shields to obfuscate that they are lawbreakers and want to be rewarded for thier infiltration.
11. Say It
Argaman ,   USA   (08.24.10)
Wow Dorothy you sound like the ISM. I wonder if Ireland and Norway would like these infiltrators; human shields used by their parents to impress nastys like yourself.
12. Keep the children throw out the law?
Ilan ,   Ariel   (08.24.10)
What country doesn't have immigration rules? For 400 children we become the only country in the world without enforcement of work permits? Ridiculous. The attacks on Yishai are the acts of small minded racists who can not survive without the nazi stereotyping of religious and sephardim.
13. Out with all these strangers!
Phoenix ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
Israel does not owe nothing to people that enter our country ilegaly!!!!! The Children of foreigners are foreigners... They have their own country, they must all leave! Israel belongs to the Jewish people.
14. these are Israeli Children
Zuri ,   Sydney Australia   (08.24.10)
I am so disappointed by our leaders attitude, we are a nation of mix races and different origins, no-one is a pure blooded Jew, and those foreign children were born in democratic Israel, where they should be considered 100% Israelis. that's what should really happen. and if not so:" I am a part of a double standard racist country"
15. Eli Yishai vs Yair
R ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
Aside from Yair making clear his opinion, I don't think he made any logical points. I'm no Shas supporter, but Eli Yishai has supported his point with logic. These parents have come here on tourist/working visas for economical, reasons. Accepting the visa means accepting that you are visitors in the country and should abide by the law. With all due respect, having a child does not buy you the right to disregard the law. Young children will adapt easily to their parent's native country, provided that the parents adopt a positive attitude about it. Wasn't earning money to enable returning to a better life the premise of the stay to begin with?
16. Straightforward
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (08.24.10)
The issue at argument here is really quite straightforward. It is unacceptable in a Western democracy in the 21st century to: 1. have citizenship conditioned on someone's religion. 2. deport people from the country in which they were born. No exceptions. End of story.
17. #16
Aryeh ,   Jerusalem   (08.24.10)
Go and learn the policies of the western democracy. Except the USA, there isn't any others which recognize the right of living where you're born. All western country deport people which are illegaly there, even if they have never seen another country. Even in the USA, the only country where there is such a right, there is the question of deporting them.
18. Children
A Shvitzer ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
I am not racist but feel that these children and their parents need to go . Israel is a tiny country and will not be able to cope with more and more immigrants coming from around the world.Other countries would have sent these people home already they do have a country and family to go to.
19. Didn't read the full article - it won't change public opinio
Secular ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
ESPECIALLY when there are haredi parents who are refusing to send their children to the same school as sephardi children - why doesn't Eli Yishai TELL THEM there's nothing wrong with it - why is he keeping so quiet. This was only a newspaper interview - not a sworn court testament - it means nothing.
20. #17 Aryeh
Alan ,   Europe   (08.24.10)
it is you who should , quote : "Go and learn the policies of the western democracy". Mike Carmel #16 is correct, kids born in european countries automatically get citizenship, from day 1. In some european countries the kids are allowed to have 2 passports. Aryeh stop lying! Someone in Israel (possibly intending to pay less salaries) has asked foreign workers to come to Israel and do the "lower" work israelis refused to do. If these people got pregnant, well, get over it you cant have it both ways. Italy France Spain Germany, they all give citizenship to new born kids, regardless of gender, religion, skin colour or passport their parents have.
21. ELI YSHAI, A MAN OF HONOR
sarah ,   israel   (08.24.10)
eli is a man of good example, standing on his decisions and policies, people are fooled by the bad press but the truth will prevail... illegal people are no good to any country!!!
22. Yair Lapid is the problem
Y   (08.24.10)
Eli Yishai is consequent. Yair Lapid is not. It is either you apply the rule of law, or you don't. The problem is that people like Yair Lapid accept the law, but would like to circumvent it when it becomes difficult and will not be found to be accountable for their acts. What Lapid should have proposed is to abolish law of return, separate religion and state, immigration laws like in any other democratic country. But that he doesn't either. I
23. Mr. Yishay do you remember something on history?
Bruno ,   Brussels   (08.24.10)
When WW2 broke out a lot of jews were saved by rightous Filipino's, Jews that escaped from Europe and all over the world..of course Mr. Yishay doesn't care to much because your relatives did't get affected by the holocaust. But just to remind you that in the Torah it's written that you shouldn't forget the people that saved your life. Peace
24. #20 Alan
Aryeh ,   Jerusalem   (08.24.10)
I'm well aware of western policies, and you are the one lying (by simplification only maybe, but still) here.. In France for instance, a children can get nationality at birth at only 2 conditions : he is stateless or one of his parents is alo born in france (without the nationality). In German, one of the parent has to have a permanent residing permit, or already being able to ask for naturalization. In Italy, they can acquire citizenship by birth only if they are stateless. It's true that in those countries there are easier naturalisation for children born there, but still with some conditions. In Spanish, well, there at last there is such a right, but after one year of living there, and not automatically. On wikipedia there is a list of states where there is a true "Jus soli", about 16%, and of them, the only western countries are USA and Canada.
25. foreign kids/yair lapid
bear ,   zefat, israel   (08.24.10)
Adon Yishai.. stick to your guns and don't let them browbeat you. Better..Ask Lapid what is his agenda. Put him on the defensive. the more you answer these people the more they have to say.
26. Logic won
Raoul ,   Herzlia Israel   (08.24.10)
I am no Shas supporter but Eli Yishai clearly won this debate. I had thought it was just a case of 400 kids but it seems there is more to it than that.
27. what logic?
Alan ,   Europe   (08.24.10)
this is not about logic, this is about kids, protection and ethic, moral and politicians/Governments/manpower agencies which are about collecting/profiting votes/power/mediation fees
28. Seriously
Alan ,   Europe   (08.25.10)
you can not have it both ways. If Israeli politicians have implemented a "solution" to "invite" foreign workers "temporarily" to work in Israel for "less money" than israeli citizens would agree on ... and IF these "workers" have got pregnant and have born kids in Israeli hospitals, then you can not disallow these kids the right of Israeli citizenship, not by the "western moral standards". Otherwise it would "seem" to be savage barbaric stubborn uncivilized unethical implementation of "rule of law". Seriously.
29. #24 Aryeh
Alan ,   Europe   (08.25.10)
In all honesty, when it comes to the rule of law, Italy Germany France Spain and similar western countries DO NOT ABUSE children born on their territories. 1st of all you can not quote some wikipedia article and expect me to believe it. 2nd of all, in case you are telling the truth prove me, as in bring serious evidence, maybe some media report, some article, some report, that France Italy Spain or Germany have INDEED ONCE (ever) EXPELLED CHILDREN of parents with legal (temporary!?) work-permit-of-residence, born on their territories. On the contrary, these children get citizenship regardless some temporary interior minister/government would dare to try expelling them, simply because the voters would never accept such blind/stubborn/barbaric implemention of rule of law(if at all exists?). In Italy Germany France Spain, politicians DO NOT DARE. Such politicians would be out of office at latest the very next election. Its common sense in western Europe/Countries. This has never ever happened because, rule of law or not, such countires would never do such thing, expell children born in these countries. The contrary is the truth : these countries embrace new borns, regardless their parents religion, citizenship or skin colour. The public outrage would be loud and clear. So, Aryeh from Jerusalem I ask you to show me proof of a single new born child (parent having temporary work-and-or-permisison-of-residence) being expelled, and please do not quote Wikipedia again. Instead, show me Die Welt, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Le Figaro, Le Monde, France Soir, The BBC, The Times, The Independent, Il Corriere Della Sera, La Stampa La Repubblica. Not to mention Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium. So, Aryeh from Jerusalem, show me 1 single proof you are not lying. I am expecting your response, here, soon. Aryeh from Jerusalem, I assure you, in case you have serious proof, I will admit my fault. Aryeh of Jerusalem I dare you to prove me wrong, otherwise I will continue calling you a liar. Have a nice day.

Aryeh ,   Jerusalem   (08.25.10)
First of all, I'm french, I'm coming from the south-west of france. Then, the only quotation from wikipedia is the one about the 16%. Each of the others are summary of the originals texts of law from those country. Go and look yourself, each country of which I've written about. Now, if you want an example, there is the perfect story right now happening in france : the deportation of hundred of roms : www.lefigaro.fr/politique/2010/08/24/01002-20100824ARTFIG00569-roms-fillon-veut-une-action-ferme-sans-laxisme-ni-exces.php
