ghostq   (08.24.10)
you barely got grammer rules, and it's new language, many letters you miss compare to other languages, and there is nothing to memories, oh BTW darwish is turkish origin name, usually you can find darwishes in north Turkey.
32. # 24 Stay in Williamsburg
Sagi   (08.24.10)
and steep in your disgusting language and culture that brought shame and tragedy on our people. You and your "culture" should be forgotten, erased from our memories. It was a black era and continues to be a black stain on our people, just like the black suits you wear.
33. Sagi, Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote in
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (08.24.10)
Yiddish. That is redemption enough for the language, that one fact. My grandparents all spoke Yiddish as an everyday language. That is redemption number two.
34. Great idea
Berl ,   formely of Seattle   (08.24.10)
That way we can understand what the Pali leadership is telling its people and understand for ourselves how they lie in English to fool the world and say the truth what they really intend in Arabic to their people
35. Fifth graders should study the Russian language in Israel

As you have probably gathered by now I have very intense feelings regarding religion, any religion. I have even more intense feelings regarding the perpetuation of the sub culture called "yiddishkeit". Yiddish is a bastard language which was invented and used for centuries to serve the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe in such a way that they could be secretive and separate from their surroundings and could conduct their business covertly from the prying eyes of the authorities and the other citizens. A culture grew around this language that in my humble opinion caused friction and tension and eventually lead to hatred. Thousands of Yiddish communities were destroyed or abandoned and a new life was sought, mainly in America and Israel. Why do these people want to continue this culture when it brought so much trouble to our doorstep. Why do they talk about "der heime" and show longing for it when they have a new home already for five or six generations. They may long for "der heime" but those they left behind do not long for them. My great grandfather came here from Russia in 1892, shaved off his beard, discarded his outfit, rolled up his sleeves and never in his life uttered another word of Yiddish as a matter of principle. Reluctantly he spoke Russian when he had no choice. We are Israelis now. We have our own national language and culture. "Yiddishkeit" was and is practiced by backward people, just take a look at the slums of Bnei Brak and Mea Shearim. Why not forget it, what was good about it, what is good about it today. I am sorry if I upset you but I feel very strongly on the subject.
37. to #32 oh oh you sound mad, you see sagi
ghostq   (08.24.10)
the language of yiddish is actually german that you write in hebrew letters, I find it very kool, but I know you don't like europene jews, other wise you would know not all yidish speaking r jewish or askenazis, a year ago Ahmed tibi spoke Yiddish on yIddish day in your parliament, just to let you know.
38. #24/ 33, YIDDISH IS A NEW LANGUAGE.JEWS SPEAK HEBREW

MASHIACH WILL NOT SPEAK YIDDISH..... lets not be silly with this yiddish... REPEAT: HEBREW IS OUR HOLY LANUGUAGE
39. Left Wing and Arab definition of "tolerance":
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.24.10)
"Either Jews die in another Spanish Inquisition, Russian Pogroms, German Nazi Holocaust or Arab anti-Semitic massacres or Jews agree to be told what to do in their ancient homeland of Israel, being dominated by Moslems and Arabs simply because Moslems as a religion/ideology and Arabs as a racist anti-Semitic genocidal empire hellbent on Arab domination in the Middle East regard Jews as an inferior race of people without human rights, citizenship rights and national rights. Arabs agree to kill Jews and steal the ancient homeland of the Jewish people - Israel - and Jews agree to yield land and get killed." Tolerance yeah? Sure, study Arabic, but that doesn't mean that tolerance for intolerance can be tolerated, accepted or enforced. And that doesn't mean that Arabs have to stay in Israel. We can help the Arabs to pack their bags and leave - permanently. Real tolerance means: Jewish land is Jewish and Arab land is Arab. Israel, including Gaza, Judea, Samaria, Jerusalem, the Temple Mount and the Golan, is JEWISH, and the Arab states are ARAB. In the Arab mind, what is Arab and Jewish are both Arab. If Jews resist this Arab harassment and Arab imperialism, the tiny Jewish nation under siege and threatened by an Arab empire, is suddenly accused of being "racist" accompanied by Israeli journalists and Israeli left wingers that back every Arab statement - including that earth is flat.
40. Strong Arab Identify vs Weak Jewish1
David Aarons ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
If these five year olds are not also grounded strongly in their Jewish identity with so many anti Jewish identity forces in this country human nature may and has caused many to identify with a strong identity such as the Arabs have.
41. 33 , Robert
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.24.10)
There are Yiddish and Ladino institutions here . Those promote the knowledge of our parents and grandparents languages and to preserve our heritage . I think that there is even a Yiddish festival in Cracow , Poland . You forgot Shalom Aleichem , also one of our great writers in Yiddish . In other countries they also try to preserve local tongues . My parents spoke Yiddish at home .
42. How about the Jewish students studying
jason white ,   afula,israel   (08.24.10)
Jewish history and Zionism? Let them learn of the Jewish connection to the land of Israel. If the abraham fund is paying for it, it is no good for Jews and Israel. Finally, English is not spoken by the young as much as it was 20-30 years ago.
43. ENGLISH ENGLISH ENGLISH
Al   (08.24.10)
Without English you will be poor forever. Arabic ...you guys make me laugh...
44. Hey Al #43, are you a redneck Yank?
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (08.24.10)
We have the English, dorkamous, that's why Israel is such a high-tech powerhouse. Arabic? You Americans make me cry with your ignorance of anything that isn't in the only working language you have. Arabic? You make me sick to know that in the American "intelligence" community there was almost nobody who could speak, read or write Arabic. And you wonder why some Islamic whackos knocked down the WTC and took a chunk out of the Pentagon? You redneck ignoramuses make me sick. If there weren't so many dead people because of your ignorance maybe I'd laugh. Go read some Sun Tzu, you moron.
45. Kniwing as many languages as possible is
leo ,   usa   (08.24.10)
beneficial for everyone, no doubt. But Arabic is not the language of the future of the region. Many people(s) are awakening to their roots just like Jews did and resentment for all things Arabic is slowly growing.
46. idiot you unite a country by having one language not 2
(08.24.10)
47. #8, because Israel is not surrounded by yiddish speakers
Danny   (08.24.10)
Whether it is war - in which case Israel needs speakers for it army and intelligence services - or it is peace and Israel needs them for trading.
48. Great idea
Talula ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
Children only need three languages in Israel - Hebrew - English - Arabic. All the rest are irrelevant.
49. #36
observer   (08.24.10)
(i) There is no such thing as a pure language. All languages are bastard. (ii0 Yiddish was not invented as you claim, but is the natural outgrowth of a separate society. Any sociolinguistic primer could tell you that. It actually fuses a few German local dialects, mainly Southern and central. As for the later admixture of Slavic elements, there are extremely close parallels in ethnic German dialects spoken in those same areas. (iii) To claim that Yiddish culture caused anti-Semitism is not supported by history. German anti-Semitism existed before Yiddish - it was the product of the Catholic Church, and was transported to Eastern Europe by migratory waves of Germans, including their priests. Nazism arose in Germany almost 100 years after Yiddish had ceased to be a spoken language in that country. (iv) If you wish to argue that Jewish exclusiveness gave rise to anti-Semitism, the State of Israel is a very good example of that, including the resulting international hatred. (v) What you define as a sub-culture, whatever you may mean by that, is actually a natural evolution of a living culture. Israeli 'culture' would better be defined as a sub-culture by virtue of the fact that it started out in life as an artificial creation, and quickly discarded its proletariat roots and imitated the USA to the best of its Middle eastern ability. (vi) Not quite sure where your grandfather comes into the picture - is he a historical analogy? At all events, you don't appear to have evolved any since he walked the earth, or do you intend remaining stuck in the nineteenth century, together with the kibbutz movement and other aspects of radical Zionism to prove to coming generations what went wrong? (vii) Slums? I don't think you have to travel to Bene Beraq to see slums. there are enough in the secular areas.
50. #3 - end of terrorism, not language, will bring peace
William ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
The issue with Eden Abergil was not a result of not knowing Arabic. Peace is the same in every language. But terrorism seems to mean "brave" in Arabic and that is one thing I believe IDF soldiers already know. As #1 pointed out, knowing Arabic might just prove to many the hatred that exists among the Arabs for their "cousins" - despite the massive Leftist cover-up of the facts in the education system. I can see you need a better tutor for Arabic. Everytime you hear an Arab leader curse Jews, call for the destruction of Israel and its people, or beg Allah to give him martyrdom, you claim he was mis-translated. Majority rules.
51. How about German? -Really, why not: the past&the Future
tom ,   tel aviv   (08.24.10)
52. #35 What a crock of crap - what's Russian anyway?
Talula ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
It's not the Israeli national language, it's not the most widely spoken language in the world - in fact it has no relevance. And, if you don't like it, there's an Aeroflot flight leaving in 30 minutes to fly you straight back to the Kremlin.
53. I'm willing to give free lessons
Abo Yousif ,   London UK   (08.24.10)
Very good idea in fact. I've always questioned if Arabic is being studied in Israel, I now know the answer. How difficult is it to learn Hebrew if I speak Arabic as my mother tongue?
54. Well how long do you want to remain in your cocoon israel?
Sultan ,   Jeddah   (08.24.10)
putting all the "language of the enemy" crap aside, you are located in the middle east and you simply must learn arabic if you want to become a dynamic part of the region.
55. uneducated
handala ,   jerusalem/palestine   (08.24.10)
well i have to tell you that you are the most uneducated person have ever seen, and you dont know any single thing about arabic, arabic is well known to be one of the hardest languages, you should go study arabic a bit and u will know what i mean
56. Go Cohen #44!
Sultan ,   Jeddah   (08.24.10)
57. great for coexistance
Rami of Nazareth ,   Israel   (08.24.10)
We, Israelis; jews and arabs are destined to live together in this beautiful country called Israel. Israeli arabs start learning hebrew at 3rd grade and it is required to get Begrut Shalem. Cultural exchange between jewish and arabic schools inside israel has been a great way to eliminate stereotypes and promote coexistence and shows how much we have in common. Hope to see more such programs.
58. The other side?
Pixelated Dwarf ,   USA   (08.24.10)
Wondering if this will be reciprocated. Will the Arabs start teaching Hebrew and tolerance in their schools rather than denying that the State of Israel doesnt exist and hatred towards everyone who doesnt have a bomb vest on.
59. #44 if you cant debate the issue but must resort to name
Al   (08.24.10)
calling then I cant help you. You obviously have some issues with yourself. I suggest you do us all a favour and piss into your soup. By the way I speak 4 languages.
60. Sagi 36 , as always HATEFULL
Charles ,   Petrach Tikva   (08.24.10)
I'll always remember your "when you have ten , it's nothing to loose 1 . Yiddish has a culture with some great writers . Was spoken and had papers in the USA . Remember the "forwards" , not a right wing religious paper ! Poor people ? not only in Bene berak and mea shearim . In my town i regularely see people searching in trash bins of shops and at the market . I see people looking for empty bottles at falafel stores , bars and so . 30 agorot a piece ! And those are not the kind of people you always despice .
