1. dark middle ages "people"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.30.10)
Those "rabbanim" should be brought in front of a TRUE court , and sentensed to a long jail term .
2. the judge
kretchen ,   EU   (08.30.10)
'When judgment is made down here, there is no judgment up there' Oh, and what, if it turned out in the end, that there is a final judgement up there anyway?
3. Let them do what they want among themselves!!!!
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (08.30.10)
In cases like this I always think of what the late PM Begin said about Sabra and Shatila! If they are busy enough they will leave the secular folks alone!
4. rabbi s punishment
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.30.10)
Being religious, i am shocked by this article.rThe religious life i know is not about punishment;it is about love, care for elderly and sick people, for help to poor, for respect of teachers and parents, for retaining of negative talk, for above all respecting G-ds Tora.Unfortunately,we live in an extreme world, and extreme things happen in orthodoxe world, and not less in secular world.Let us all, secular and orthodoxe, together, strive for a better world; beginning in our family, among our friends, our neighbours our city, our beloved land ISRAEL SHANA TOVA
5. Sensationalist nonsense
Pnina B ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.30.10)
This article is nonsense and a disgrace to journalism. The 'flogging' is a symbolic and strictly non-violent ceremony that some people take upon themselves during the period before the Jewish New Year, that is a day of judgement. The fact that Ynet didn't post the video is a further indication that they know just how sensationalist and vacuous this story is.
6. Choice
Simon ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.30.10)
The singer and the Rabbis chose to do this. They are not forcing it upon anybody, and probably wouldn't be halacicaly allowed to. As such, it isn't really interesting news.
7. Rabbi flogged for previous behavor
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (08.30.10)
Friend told this to me over weekend and couldn't believe it. Said we live in Israel, not Iran..... Careful, or we will end up back in the Middle Ages with Iran ruling all of us.
8. Estimates
James ,   Australia   (08.30.10)
How long until Israel is as bad, if not worse, than Iran and Saudi Arabia?
9. How could you do an April Fools story in August?
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (08.30.10)
Jews whipping Jews for singing? Oh I get it, this happened in Saudi Arabia.
10. Amnon Yitzak is a dangerous preacher
Israeli grandma   (08.30.10)
Years ago I listened to one of his rants on free tape during a road trip. He shouted on about Hell and so on for sinners, and at first I thought I was listening to a Christian fundamentalist missionary!!! The comparisons were so close as to be a joke. Mainstream Judiasm is not all about punishment and fear of retribution in the afterlife, but about decent behaviour and charity to the less fortunate. Modern sexual prudery was not part of core Judaism, but decent and moral behaviour in all aspects of life is.
11. "Flogging"
Yitzy   (08.30.10)
I watched the video of the "flogging". Not much of a flogging at all. Np pain, no blood, no tears. Completely symbolic activity.
12. Every society was warped cults, this is another one
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (08.30.10)
The problem is that any bozo can declare himself a "rabbi" and set up his own rabbinical kangaroo court. The reason you've never heard of Jews flogging Jews before is because it doesn't happen. This "rabbi" is just another nutcase pretending to be some great wise man. Alas, he's just another wise guy. Too bad Moe isn't around to put this stooge in his place.
13. Dorothy
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.30.10)
So why then get bothered when people in a foreign country murder each other ? They are not killing us , so .....
14. Religious Guy
(08.30.10)
He aint my Rabbi and does not represent Judaism AT ALL...Like the small sect of "Jews" in Beit Shemesh who's women Wear Burkas, this is the fringe of the fringe with no Jewish Law to back it. But, of course, YNey seems to leave that part of the story out...
15. punishment
A Shvitzer ,   Israel   (08.30.10)
This is exactly like Iran /Saudi Arabia this should not be allowed to happen here. Its a disgrace!
16. To Ynet and naive posters: The flogging he received
Shalom   (08.30.10)
was just symbolic. In no way was it like the flogging done at the time of the Sanhedrin. This BT did not realize that he did something against halachah and requested some form of punishment for himself. But of course the Left media, to satisfy those who despise haredim, would distort the true report - as usual.
17. sick! sick! sick....and anyone who thinks
eddie ,   ashdod   (08.30.10)
it's okay is as sick and primitive as this act and way of thinking.
18. Not as crazy as Torquemada
Dr D ,   Jerusalem   (08.30.10)
but getting there..... If we continue to let them spread their craziness one day we will assist again to stoning in Kikar Harabbanim Hagedolim.
19. Disgusting
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.30.10)
This "rabbi" is a disgrace. He causes such a bad name for Jews and Judaism. I am sure that the founding fathers and mothers of the the Jewish Religion would have nothing to do with such person.
20. PROOF subject themselves to flagellation
Josh   (08.30.10)
This is forbidden. Clearly the only book written in the first person by a true prophet, Moshe, never mentions this holiday. The last and final word of Moshe and no mention of it while G-d talked and guided Moshe. Yet because the holiday is in a book written by an no name author who changed the words of Moses and wrote in the second person as if he saw what hapepened, the Jewish people bought into it? Or is it just because men told you too without them passing Devarim 13. A test you are bound by Torah to give. The same time Muslims are subjecting themselves to flagellation we are too? Asur! Think about this stuff already. G-d want you too prove your love. Shma! Sometings wrong, look around at the path we are on. This is not what Torah describes as choose life.
21. #13 -- Look, I am so tired of these people...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (08.30.10)
... interfering with us, that I say just let them keep themselves busy with each other. Your comparison is inaccurate. I have to problem coming to the aid of people who don't want to exploit and rule me the way the local fundamentalist Jews do.
22. Nothing to do with religion,The real reason is,
jiacomino U.K ,   huddersfield UK   (08.30.10)
Every society has elements who practice Sado-masochism,Pure and simple.Where does God come into this?
23. Orthodox rules
Zeev ,   Sydney   (08.30.10)
I am so impressed by Orthodox Judaism - as it claims to be the only relevant and authentic expression of Judaism.
24. Um, that wasn't real flogging.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (08.30.10)
That was just a symbolic "punishment" because, nowadays, we can't really have a Beit Din that can issue physical punishments anymore. I have my own issues with Amnon Yitzhak, who seems to operate in a manner scarily similar to Christian evangelist TV preachers in the US, but he didn't really do anything untoward here.
25. To#5Pnina
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.30.10)
To-day it is not violent, but still,i think it should not be done,in order not to take any risk, ,G-d preserve, that tomorrow this practice degenerates.
26. Next it will be birthday spanking machines.
Ahahaha   (08.30.10)
They should do the same everytime the Rabbi opens his mouth adding to Torah or claiming he speaks for G-d without showing us a sign or wonder.
27. Singer gets flogged.....
Moragh   (08.30.10)
by a bunch of Fruit & Nut cases. For Pete's sake, take one look at them. My goodness, what is the Lord above saying about that bunch of nincompoops? They will be heavily judged, of that I am certain.
28. Shabbatai Zvi ..
Eddie ,   london UK   (08.30.10)
it sounds more like false messianism.. The orthodox courts no longer have the power to flog anyone.
29. flogging
Natalie ,   Latvia   (08.30.10)
After reading the heading I thought it happened in Iran.
30. All sounds a bit kinky
Avi ,   Israel   (08.30.10)
