31. sounds more ritual than punishment
potash katiftof ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.30.10)
It appears that they just performed a ritual in which he was ceremoniously whipped, though not using painful force. Doesn't sound like they had nor needed a medical team present.
32. Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak and Lady GaGa
Avi ,   Israel   (08.30.10)
He should check out Lady GaGa`s show, with any luck the old fool will have a heart attack.
33. Well done ynet
I say it again   (08.30.10)
causing hatred with stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with us. Ynet is as sick as they are, sick in their obsession to seek out actions that will cause hatred. Stop swallowing the garbage. Youre playing into their hands. Stop reacting and just watch how the garbage will stop too. Chabad next week folks...:) This guy's been around for years, for his own kinda people. They love it and their closed world.
34. What about The Klezmer Festival???
Chaya ,   Tel Aviv   (08.30.10)
Is Amnon Yitzhak going to bring his hooligans next year into the Klezmer Festival where men and women sit together listening to music being performed by religious and non-religious musicians, oftentimes with women playing instruments together with men???
35. what a joke....
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (08.30.10)
this flooging is only symbolic and many people do it on the eve of Yom Kippur as well ...yet there was never a report on it. WHY? because it is not sensational. YNET really ought to get their priorities in order and leave this entertainer to his private life.
36. The problem is this doesn't remain among the fruitcakes
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (08.30.10)
Some have suggested that this is just a bunch of wackos that don't really affect us. Wrong. It's the extremists and wackos that often set the agenda. Consider. In 1970-71, when I was first in Israel, haredi, rz and secular, men and women rode the same Egged buses; today we have not just mehadrim buses but some are pushing for such gender separation on the new light rail. And in stores, and even on some sidewalks! At the Three Day March before Pesah in '71, we had 25,000 gathered in the Judean Hills, with soldiers in attendance . Secular and religious gathered on the grounds for the evenings mixed gender entertainment; now consider the furor over entertainment at the opening of the Calatrava Bridge in Jerusalem a few years ago, and today's walkouts by religious soldiers before female singers. Back then no rabbi in authority would have considered revoking a conversion, or questioning one performed by an Orthodox rabbi in the US. Today, well, you know ... So we can't ignore what's being pushed by the extremists in our communities. The "new normal" they are pushing is truly disturbing.
37. This was just a ceremony & all participation was voluntary
tomer ,   herzeliyya   (08.30.10)
this was just some symbolic religious play acting like a free masons thing. Attendance was purely voluntary. Article is just another Leftist Haredi-bashing piece. I say this as someone totally secular myself.
38. Dorothy , my comparison is OK .
Charles ,   Petrach Tikva   (08.30.10)
Sorry to contradict you . It's not about the "acts" but about the "no problem for me"
39. To 4 , Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.30.10)
We don't live in a world where "tout le monde il est beau , tout le monde il est gentil" [ everyone is nice , everyone is kind ] You are dreaming ! but not a realist .
40. Pathetic
Moishe Frumkin ,   uk   (08.30.10)
Even if this punishment was symbolic these people are crazy and this is totally against Judaism .
41. Roman , not a flogging ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.30.10)
Because there is no Beth Din ? was he wipped or not ? So no important what retarded guy punished him , not important if he is by him self a retarded one . He was wipped ....
42. See the Video!
J ,   J   (08.30.10)
Did anybody, including Ynet, even bother to see the video??? No! If so, you would have seen that is was SYMBOLIC! He literally got tapped 39 times by a 'whip'. There was no whipping as reported.
43. To#39Charles
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.30.10)
It is true Charles,we don t live in a ideal world, and i am a realistic dreamer. As a child my father told me a story which i do never forget. Two flies fell in a glass of milk. One thought he is lost, and died;the other one tried desesperately to survive, crawling in the milk till it became butter.
44. Lashes...
Ariel ,   São Paulo - Brazil   (08.30.10)
To those who argue that the lashes were not strong, think what would happen if some rabbi interpret the law saying that they would have to be strong enough to leave a little blood (as it was originally)
45. #41 He *wasn't* whipped, Charles!
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (08.30.10)
That's the whole point. It was all just symbolic, nothing more - even Amnon Yitzhak understands that he has no authority, be it state-decreed or Halakhic, to mete out physical punishment. The singer *wasn't whipped*. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43gksyW6L8Y Watch the video. It wasn't even a real whip, and the man was just touched by it 39 times, as can be seen in the bookcase's reflection. It's just a ceremony, nothing more.
46. To 43 , Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.30.10)
Stay dreaming . Nice tale , only a tale for little children . A realist is not a dreamer . A realist has his two feet on earth .
47. marko@yahoo.com
marko ,   tel aviv   (08.30.10)
You want these kind of people ruling you? Iran will be the result ,lets stop them before its to late

thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.30.10)
All great realizations begin with a dream.
49. J J #43
they dont want 2 no   (08.30.10)
Dont spoil it for all these bored haters.Ynet too, they just l e r v e the hatred they cause. Never ever try to tell them that it has absolutely nothing to do with them, never try to show them the truth, its not worth it, nor are they. Just yawn and wait for the next dose of voyeurism. Be grateful you have a life , unlike.... BTW Theyve started on a recent vishnitz wedding over at the hebrew boredom society.
50. #45 Gave the link to the video
Avraham ,   NJ   (08.31.10)
I find it amazing how so many people on here are lashing out! Watch the video. Also, it was voluntary and not painful at all. AND he received some kappara for his sins. We could all use kappara. I would LOVE to be whipped knowing it would reduce the dinim min hashamayim. I know I've got plenty of that coming! Most people on here surely do as well.
51. There are two problems here
Sagi   (08.31.10)
A) That it happens. B) That the authorities let it happen. The latter is by far the greater problem.
52. Roman , OK and thanks
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.31.10)
But to believe in such things is not for people living in the 21 st century . .
53. To 48 , Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.31.10)
Yes , but no one who dreamed of a world where "tout le monde il est beau ....." had his dream realised , and there were many who did it , i think . Look at "charidim need help" under Opinion .
54. #50
#49   (08.31.10)
Wht is someone like you bothering with this trash? English Hamodia much more worth while
55. religious buffoonery!
Steve ,   USA   (08.31.10)
The more involved we become in any religion where we deny common sense and subscribe to the lunacy of self professed holy men, the further we stray from god. God does not require costumes, ceremonies, and arcane rituals, and certainly did not create us merely to grovel before him. That would make him little more than a callous and narcissistic entity. Our mission statement is to acquire real knowledge and unfold the mechanisms of the universe providing us insight into his architecture and purpose. Subscribing to the rants of desert dwelling primitives thousands of years ago is poor judgement to say the least. Judaism is about remaining on the cutting edge of man's quest for REAL insight. Not simply rehashing stale fairy stories. My creator endowed me with an inquisitive spirit and the power to reason. Why does your god wish to keep you fat, dumb, and happy?
56. Third and biggest problem
hilarious but sad   (08.31.10)
is bored people with with no life of their own, or a terribly dull life, so they trespass on others. Amnon Yitz has been strutting his stuff for years. We received a cassette of his in our letter box some years back. Gee, guess what! We ignored it. Someone invited me to come and hear him. Gee, guess what! I said No thank you. Gee, I'm tolerant. Have a nice day.
57. Listen up all of you - who are critical of this issue
AB ,   TheRock   (08.31.10)
None of us have been up there to know what happens when we get there after a sinful life. There are several accounts of ppl however who have gone through a clinical death and report that the suffering, which is really a feeling of tremendous shame and an inability to come close to that beautiful light - is unbearable. G-d in His Infinite Kindness gives us an opportunity to make things right down here. We always have a chance to make things good. If we believe this, which I do (thank G-d), then to go through what this singer went through to cleanse his soul is an absolute bargain! What is the point of criticizing this if one is completely ignorant of what the alternative is. It's all very well hoping that one just gets away with it all but it's a fool's paradise to think that way.
58. #57 Beautiful sincere thoughts
oh dear   (08.31.10)
Sadly, both adjectives wasted and wilfully misused on majority of ynet club members. Why lend yourself to their evil mocking and spiteful ridicule? Have a sweet year. From one of the minority.
59. To#53Charles
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.31.10)
This seems indeed an unrealistic dream. But my dream is more" terre a terre"(realistic) I am doing the best i can with my means,to keep the good on earth strong enough to overwin the bad. This is a thing everybody can do and helps a lot.I would like to compare our sick world, with a human body full of microbs. Mostly, these ,as long we have a healthy lifestyle, cann t do us to much harm. Now let us get practical,it would be great,if we all take the telefone NOW and say a few nice words to a lonely person,or say sorry to someone we have hurt by talking to harshly,or try to understand why the other was not nice with us.These little things can change so much in people s life.(one day,in a flowershop, needing some time to choose flowers, the owner got angry, and was impolite.I answered him:You surely had a difficult day. After this he treated me like a VIP. This man passed away some days later.)May next year be a better year.

thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (08.31.10)
I do not agree with you. There are many good people between them;and ynet published your tb,this proofs they are impartial.Do not forget that G-d helped the secular to conquer Israel, and so to realise Herzl s(a secular )dream. The orthodoxe have to be an example ,and try to live in harmony with the secular. They are our brothers.Shana Tova.
