Hunphrey Appleby ,   Whitehall, UK   (08.28.10)
You're right about the Asian Tiger. But I am sure you meant the Chinese or the Malay. After Alexander the Great cleaned out the Parthian Empire (Your country), I haven't seen any progress from that region. Get over it. What was 4,000 ago ain't important now. And your drones or rockets are a cheap copy of what the Germans already let loose on my country 66 years ago. Probably less accurate they are. Hence me and the chaps wonder why your adversaries (the Israelis) are afraid of so called achivements of the Mullahs. I guess, as an internal Whitehall paper, that once passed my desk in 1965, the prospect of fear is a good "marketing" (propaganda) tool.
32. Turkey sever ties? Ha ha
Shoshanna ,   Tel Aviv, Is   (08.29.10)
The world has severed ties with Turkey. In your Turkish nationalism arrogance you feel you have a sense of entitlement to break our blockade with your IHH "charity" workers who were brandishing weapons. The Flotilla had the Palestinian Flag (flag of a country that doesnt exist) and the Islamic Flag of Turkey next to it - thereby provoking the IDF and disobeying the protocal of stoping at the Port of Ashod for inspection. Why does Turkey feel they have some kind of special rights to anything? Turkey isn't wanted in Europe, Russia doesn't trust Turkey, even your moslem Arab brothers remember the Ottoman Yoke and now your only trading partner --->Israel is done with you. So we have severed ties with Turkey as the rest of the world has (excluding your little brother Azerbaijan)
33. 1.5mln Armians? Almost 100 years ago? What's the big deal?
Dan the Jafa ,   Auckland,Aotearoa   (08.29.10)
Turkey is committing genocide of Kurds ***right now*** and no one gives a hoot!
34. How about the holocoust quote
mehmet ,   istanbul   (08.29.10)
f you accept every nonsense coming from Iran, Ahmedinejad also said Holocoust is not real, how about that? Only shows Iranian politicians aren't very bright at history. This grabbing every opportunity to attack Turkey seems a bit disappointing as a Turk I have always considered Jews sophisticated, rational people but this section recently turned into another middle east forum, hate-wise.
35. #16 nice blood libel
Zvi   (08.29.10)
Obviously everything in the world that is evil is our fault. Not. Go peddle your trash somewhere else.
36. What's the big deal????
Shoshanna ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.29.10)
Recognition and accountabiltiy are important. This is why the Kurds are being systematically killed "right now" by the Turks because they get away with this. "Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it" Have we not found this to be true?
37. MOnastras - Please show proof
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (08.29.10)
You spread the mud so that the trace will stay as they say in Turkish (At Camuru izi kalsin) . Jews were not involved at all with the Armenian forced exile at all. If you have any proof come and display it otherwise stop spreading lies.
38. persian cat - You are interesting
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (08.29.10)
You suggest that Israel should join a pact with Turkey and IRAN.!!!! How can you be serious. Mr. Ahmedinejad does not even recognize Israel. This is how much your comment holds water I guess.
39. How could we have ever been wrong?
Norman ,   Minneapolis, USA   (08.29.10)
The Turks seem to be big on telling others what they can and can't say.
40. Iran / Turkey
Simcha ,   So.Cal.USA   (08.29.10)
I don't think modern Turks should be held responsible for something that happened under the Caliphate. But as far as any rift between Turkey and Iran I won't shed any tears. As far as their leaders go, they can wipe each other out as a survice to humanity.
41. Why?
Hayrenaser ,   Montreal, Canada   (08.29.10)
Why does Turkey whine and overreact when someone somewhere in the world mentions that the Armenian genocide happened? Why should the Iranian VP have to give an explanation to Davutoglu simply for the undeniable truth that he stated? Enough is enough. Turkey should recognize the Armenian genocide and stop harassing its neighbors.
42. If....
Merca ,   Spain   (08.29.10)
Can you imagine these words were told by an israeli minister?.The israeli embassy besieged by angry crowds, demanding endless apologies, menacing cutting diplomatic relations.....With friends like Turkey, who need ennemies.
43. #25 I wish you were right
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (08.29.10)
I like your analysis and would certainly hope for such an outcome rather than wars and the risk of mutual destruction. However, I suggest to you the Iranian Mullahs, the Taliban, (Hezbollah and Hamas if they're around still) any other Islamic governments (regimes) that form this alliance will be unfortunately obsessed with Dar al Harb and not building a ME economic power house. Take today's Iran as an example and a good reason (I'll take a risk and guess) you don't live there. Nor can the PA get its act together. These 15-30 year olds that you mention are interested in the free world, Western brands. For your theory to hold water a lot 'Mecca' brands would have to be launched ...Mecca-Cola alone won't sustain your boom. Designer Tali B & Karzai Burqas anyone? Joking apart, Cat .. It's either war or business for these ME countries you mention whereas Israel is supporting both a flourishing economy and running an effective war machine, at least for now. Can you say that about Iran, Syria, Lebanon, the PA, Iraq and Afghanistan?
44. Turks are up in arms!!
Spencer ,   Israel   (08.29.10)
What a joke!!!All I can say is that the remarks of this Iranian were true, but perhaps he should have left sleeping dogs lie. The world knows the truth. No need to rub it in . But at least, Turkey knows what kind of "friends " the Iranians are.
45. to #15 hahaha armenians r chritians
ghostq   (08.29.10)
they refused to convert to Islam by turks order so the turks slaughtered them, you really wired person and it got nothing to do with jews. the only people who gave armenian refuge and help them to improve their churches were the jews at the time. the second larg quarter in jerusalem is the armenian quarter.
46. More than Armenians and more than 1.5MM
Yaakov ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.29.10)
Truth is that they also mas-murdered many greeks and at least 1.5MM Assyrians, as well. Funny how they don't like admitting that even as they continue to murder to Kurds in their land.
47. to the persian rat #25
donald   (08.29.10)
The truth is that an open market and a free society are the essential ingredients for economic success. Even china is still holding back because of restrictions. The more chine will open up the more its economy will grow. So for this new “middle east” economies that you describe to actually flourish has to loose its Islamic dictatorships in order to succeed. Once it does it its no more a threat to to Israel or to the west. In other words your friends are trapped they have to choose between religion and backwards economy or freedom and liberation for economic success but then they become like the west and Israel
48. More than Armenians and more than 1.5
Shoshanna ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.29.10)
Yaakov; good reminder, I learned much about the Ottoman Turkish Empire and it's terror at the Hebrew University. Besides Armenians, there were: Assyrians, Greeks, Pontian Greeks, Cypriots, Bulgarians, Balkans, Hungarians, Austrians, Kurds, Lebanese Maronites, and various Middle Eastern Arab tribes as documented by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) who rallied the Arab tribes to fight the Ottoman expansionism. Sounds like the Turkish mentality of restoring the Universal Caliphate still exists.
49. How about the holocaust quote
Shoshanna ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.29.10)
How about it? Lack of accountability and finger pointing are still wrong. At least Germany has admitted to Jewish Holocaust. Mehmet, the sooner your country admitts it's past horrid record the sooner everyone can move on and maybe start to trust Turkey. I read an article recently that Turkey is even dictating when and how Armenians can pray in an ancient Church in the Van area. Turkey and Turkish people are very arrogant and indignant. recognize the indigenous people of your country and stay out of their religious houses of worship, Turkey you have no right to dictate to the world. Besides you have enough issues with your internal investigation of Fethullah Gulen and secular vs. Islam - Lets see what happens on September 12th, when Turkey has their vote.
50. shoshanna
anton ,   istanbul/turkey   (08.29.10)
your name remind me great actrees thats the only positive thing about you who are you to tell turkey what to do you said "recognize the indigenous people of your country and stay out of their religious houses of worship" and i say give back pals land to its indigenious owners and get out how does that sound?
51. no 41
hebrew prophet ,   israel   (08.29.10)
Once again the Arab /Muslim Taqiyyah is at work ,trying to deceive the Muslim sheep and infidels it thinks it can control forever ,but where to now for the intransigent, bellicose Turkey ,caught between the Sunni and Shiite internec ine divide of conquer and rule/?
52. David Israel, Mark and donald...
Persian CAT   (08.29.10)
You all have some valid points. David, you should not take what Ahmadinejad says as gospel! He is a politician after all, he is limited to two terms therefore we won't have to waste our time on what he says or does sooner than a lot of people think. Mark, no pragmatic and thinking Iranian even gives a hoot about what a bunch of extremist terrorist, who have no problem killing Moslems and non-Moslems to achieve their goals, say. You've been visiting too many extremist web sites, my friend. You need to pay attention to what the Moslems who want to live and let live are saying and doing. Don't be another victim of the Saudi Wahhabi/Salafi terror propaganda machine. As to Israel running a "flourishing economy and an effective war machine. All I can say again, is don't be fooled by the propaganda from the Zionist side either. I'd like to see how flourishing Israel's economy will look like if the American tax-payers' largess is halted even for one year! Except of Iraq and Afghanistan, which are under illegal occupation by the US and NATO, the economies of Iran, Syria and Lebanon are not that bad considering they do not get any hand-outs from the US and Europe.
53. #52; Persian CAT
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (08.29.10)
PC writes: " I'd like to see how flourishing Israel's economy will look like if the American tax-payers' largess is halted even for one year!" Last time I looked Israel had a GNP of approximately $160 Billion dollars. Take away $3 bil, less than 2% and the effects would be minimal. Israel does have a great economy now, take into account the recent discovery of Natural Gas off the Israeli coast, and it only gets better.
54. )Persian Cat - Ahmedinejad will go but
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (08.29.10)
The Mullah's will remain. Nothing will change until there will be real secular democratic change will come to Iran. Same also apples to Turkey. Secular democratic republic as Ataturk prescribed.
55. #53. In that case as an American
Persian CAT   (08.29.10)
don't you want to keep that meager amount, according to your calcs, to be returned to the increasingly impoverish, unemployed and under-employed AMERICANs?!! With Israel-firsters like you among them, the hapless real Americans have to watch their wallets very carefully.
56. David Israel, what make you think that...
Persian CAT   (08.29.10)
"real secular democratic" change will not come to Iran soon? The Mollahs have always been in Iran and always will be. The difference is the Iranian people have seen what they can do up close and THEY don't like it. BTW, If you think Ataturk "prescribed" anything remotely democratic, then you must be talking about a different Kamal Attaurk, one that never exited. He did prescribe a secular regime, but so did Saddam, the Shah and Stalin.
57. persian cat - You have never read Ataturk and his ideology.
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (08.30.10)
Unfortunately people outside of Turkey have a wrong , distorted idea of Ataturk's doctrine. It is not easy to change an islamic rule (Ottoman Empire) into a western democracy. Turkey went through a long period of growing pains just like the French did after the french revolution (Robespierre sending Danton to the Guillotine). Unfortunately with AKP and Erdogan Turkey hot a snag. Hopefully it will recover soon. What Ataturk had prescribed for Turkey was a western type democracy not much different then the USA or France. How much of it was actually implemented is another story and should not diminish the value of his doctrine for Turkey.
58. #55, Persian CAT, No not really
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (08.30.10)
Since the vast amount of that money is in military aid, and the money comes with strings attached. The strings? 75% of all aid must be spent in the U.S., so 75 cents of every dollar in aid, goes to create jobs in the U.S., mainly in the defense industry. A great deal all around, for Israel and the U.S. taxpayer. Unless you think the U.S. can afford to lose more jobs?? So unemployment would go up in the US., not what America- firsters want, is it Persian?
59. David, before you accuse others of having a ...
Persian CAT ,   The California Coast   (08.30.10)
"wrong and distorted" idea about what you call Ataturk's doctrine, would you please clarify what you mean by "people outside Turkey"? Are you saying people inside Turkey unanimously agree with you, that Mostafa Kamal, really wanted secular democracy, so he jammed a lot of unwanted changes down their throats including forcing them to change their ancestral alphabet to an alien Western style?! Also do you have any idea why his doctrine was not implemented in spite of many coups and the unbridled Western support for the military/civilian dictatorships that followed? Also why did the EU treated Turkey like a doormat way before AKP came on the scene while your favorite "secularists" were in charge? Turkey has just found its way, and by ceasing to be the proverbial doormat for the US and NATO, it is going to grab its place as a nation of import in the ME. The Turks inside Turkey know that, and I sure they are going to vote for AKP in droves. I'm sorry to disappoint you by this sad news, but then ce la vie, homie.

You watch too many movies. Turning into Islamic caliphate and being leader of the middle east may sound a good movie material but that's the sort of thinking which turned great Iran of Pehlavi, Mossadeq into todays marginal regime noone likes. Arabic was never Turkey's ancestral alphabet Turkey's ancestral alphabet is orkhon alphabet. Ataturk and even Mohammed(pbuh) always praised progress, in the times of Ataturk it was ondoubtedly the west that's why Ataturk tried to westernise Turkey, not out of a white christian europe envy. Today the progress is shifting to east and that's why Turkey is going with the flow developing relations with not only middle east but also Russia, Korea, Japan, South America and even a trade pact with Africa is under way. Surprisingly it is only the islamic relations that get the attention of the bigot western media for obvious post 9/11 muslims=new soviets reason. So try to look at the picture from a bigger perspective not from petty fanatic details.
