for the most part. They are not religious and see no reason for it. Even if their father is 100% Jewish, or Jewish on both sides, qualify religiously as Jewish or not, they do not see "Jew"as a purely religious title but an ethnic label. They separate religion from ethnic identity, thus the ability to call oneself an atheist Jew which otherwise would be a contradiction. The Ethiopians are more similar to certain groups in Israel where ethnic identity and religion are mixed. Many do not even consider the Ethiopians as ethnic Jews but view them in a religious sense as, descendants of converts, which is why conversion is so important a subject. It is beyond a doubt that ethiopian jews are jewish. There are answers in Jewish Law about this for the past 2000 years. The reason for conversion is that after the 2nd temple was destroyed torah law did not need to be kept anymore yet everything stayed on as traditions and traditions are considered law. Ethiopian jews on the other hand did not keep these traditions so shabbat and kosher and other basic principles were not required of them. To make things less complicated the rabbi's instituted a "conversion" which was primarily for the ethiopian jews to adopt all of the jewish "traditions(laws)" kept today. The rabbis were merely preventing a situation where you would have some jews that kept shabbat and kosher etc. which was required of them and others which were not required at all. So you see the rabbis that originally instituted this process were not saying that ethiopian jews are not jewish. They were just creating a protective barrier for judaisim in general.
