1. Orthodox radicalism is based in insecurity!
(09.21.10)
If they were truly "frum" (firm) in their beliefs then they wouldn't be frightened by a statue!
2. Why?
Martin ,   Johannesburg, SA   (09.21.10)
The article fails to say the why Haredim want the statue removed.
3. Khareidim think David a deity like Muslims think Mohammed?
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.21.10)
What's their reasoning? Why didn't the article cover that? No, really--why didn't the article cover that? It's so core-essential to the topic. Paqid Yirmeyahu Paqid 16, The Netzarim, Ra'anana, Israel Israeli Torah-reverer: Teimani, Baladi, Dor Dai Jew Advocate for Logic as Hermeneutic Halakhic Authority www.netzarim.co.il Welcoming All Torah-reverers (Jews & non-Jew geirim)
4. And they want us to respect them
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.21.10)
Not enough we have to feed , protect those non contributing bipedes , they want to dictate us how to live . Let them all go to uman and stay there forever , we don't need them .
5. 3 - they avoided the topic
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.21.10)
you know all about that, being the king david of topic-avoiding.
6. Be careful with radicals ...
Antonio ,   Spain   (09.21.10)
All radicalisms arround the world begin with high pressures on little things, just training and testing the authority's response to continue pressing on higher and more important things. It may seem a joke, but the solution is to be radical with the radicals, ie, the law is tha law for all, and it cannot be disturbed for any minority. Give new wings to radicals and the'll determine, at the end, every little thing in your life.
7. What possible objection?
Israeli grandma   (09.21.10)
This article misses out essential details of what those "Haredi" fanatics object to. And by the way everyone, Migdal David is called that traditionally but the connection to our historical King David is very weak indeed. The present building was put up at some point during the Muslim occupation of Jerusalem.
8. #3 Addendum: And like the Christians think Yesh"u
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.21.10)
Muslims SAY no but their conduct demonstrates yes. At least Christians admit they deify their Yesh"u man-god idol. The khareidim conduct here seems dangerously similar to the Muslims who treat Mohammed as a deity even while they loudly deny so. 9. To # 3 , for a Goy it's essential what you asked
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.21.10)
For TRUE Jews , not .
10. #1 It's precisely BECAUSE of their beliefs
Shalom   (09.21.10)
that haredim want the statue removed. Another proof that the secular in Israel are illiterate in Jewish law even in the Ten Commandments. The Torah law against a statue is the 2nd Commandment. #2 How will the Ynet be able to bash haredim if they'll add the Torah law?
11. Another.
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.21.10)
Just another example of the shift in Israel towards extreme religious power. This is another example of what Assaf Wohl writes today about the growing power of the ultra-orthodox. People - try to remember the fall of the 2nd temple and the Zealots!
12. king David and the Haredim
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.21.10)
The best way to solution this inextricable problem,is to ask King David, what he wants ,and to do so.
13. To # 12 Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.21.10)
Do you have King David's phone number or Email ? I'll be glad to talk to Him .
14. #11 Try to remember
(09.21.10)
the immorality and The Flood and the fall of the 1st Temple and the sins.
15. 8 - only teh pakeed...
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.21.10)
only the self-appointed #16 cult leader can take an article strictly about haredim nonsense and turn it into a tool to bash other religions. is there no depth to his baseless hate??
16. DO MORE TESHUVA!!!!!!
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.21.10)
17. #10 please do sit quietly for a moment & read this:
#1   (09.21.10)
HaDiber HaShani (The 2nd Commendment) says: "You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." Shmot 20:4 and continues: "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me," Shmot 20:5 Our commentators (yes I am Jewish too) clearly state that the whole issue is whether or not one worships the image. For example let's think about: 1. the Chair of Rab Nachman here in Jerusalem is that chair worshipped because the Rab sat in it? 2. worship at the graves of the various rabbis in Israel or abroad that is surely forbidden. Don't believe me just have a look at the Rambam's commentary on explaining why it is that we don't know where Moses is buried. 3. photos of the various orthodox rabbis which are for sale in the various shops all over Meah Sherim. In other words #10 you shouldn't allow your insecurities the right to let you think you can insult other Jews gratitously. I know what I wrote and I have a solid basis for it! So please don't twist my words to suit your insecure needs!
18. Statues
RC ,   USA   (09.21.10)
I believe the second commandment is implying that you should not make graven images and pray to them because you are to only glorify God Almighty. I don’t think that having a statue in remembrance of something or someone is a sin, or else you couldn’t even take a picture of someone or something. Didn’t the Ark of the Covenant have two cherubim statues on it? The people glorified and prayed to God not the statues of angels.
19. Right. It's a statue, NOT an idol.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (09.21.10)
#1 is right. If these extremists were truly secure in their beliefs, they wouldn't be frightened by a statue. The 2nd commandment refers to idols, which we are warned not to "bow down or worship them". We aren't bowing down to this statue, any more than we bow down to Michelangelo's David.
20. To#13 Charles
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.21.10)
No telefone ,no email;he still lives in thedark ages.sorry.
21. JEWISH VALUES IN A JEWISH STATE
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.21.10)
In my opinion the Haredim have the high ground here. You don't have to even be all that frum to find the statue objectionable. Consider, one of Mr Netanyahu's constant demands is that the PA recognise Israel as a Jewish State and I don't hear too many objections to this from the Israeli public. If the term 'Jewish State' has any meaning it must surely be through Jewish values. If Israelis want Israel to be recognised as a Jewish State, they should also recognise it as such. But,even putting that aside, this is a silly issue and people should keep calm about it.I like to think that in a Jewish State even the ultra-secular can find it in themselves to be considerate towards other people's sincerely held religious sensibilities rather than engage in pointless polarising disputes. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
22. Response to # 12 thinkagain
RC ,   USA   (09.21.10)
According to the Bible I believe we are not to call upon the dead: Deuteronomy 18:9-12 “When you come into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, do not learn to do according to the abominations of those gentiles. “Let no one be found among you who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices divination, or a user of magic, or one who interprets omens or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. “For whoever does these are an abomination to יהוה, and because of these abominations יהוה your Elohim drives them out from before you.
23. Nor make thyself ANY GRAVEN Image
John Phee ,   Sydney AUSTRALIA   (09.22.10)
While the sculpture breaches the 10 Commandments & is clearly a breach of Jewish Law it is hard not to feel that the Haredi are imposing. They are right in the strictest sense but also damn them for beinjavascript:%20save()g right.
24. Moving the wrong thing!
Mark ,   Kfar Saba   (09.22.10)
The Haredim want??? Those useless, under developed, council squatters who contribute NOTHING to Israel WANT the statue moved??? We who work and pay tax must allow our tax money to do what the non-contributing religious squatters want? I think not - time for these municipal religious squatters to be put to work or told to simply crawl back under the rock they came from! They are useless oxygen theives who, due to their lack of contribution to the State and even not recognising the State should have no rights. Dump them in the middle of the Negev and let them eat Manna!!
25. to # 20 : "forgot to think"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.22.10)
To say : Ask Him , shows YOU live in the dark middle ages , and this even if you have a Email and phone .
26. To22
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.22.10)
I agree absolutely with you.Had i think ,one second, somebody would take my tb seriously,i would not have written it,sorry.
27. To 26 . THINK before you write !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.22.10)
You more than once forgot it -) חג שמח
28. #2 Why? Guess
Mark ,   Kfar Saba   (09.22.10)
Martin, when or if you lived here you would see what useless, no good, squatters the Haredim are - then you will know why! They agitate and protest at anything and everything and dream up some BS reason for their actions. If they applied the amount of effort they expend being objectionist to something constructive and perhaps, G-d forbid, getting a paying job, then maybe Israel would be an even better place. The correct question is "Why? Why do we tolerate these "bottom feeding", non-contributors? Dump them in the Negev to wail and pray all day, and gather Manna at night!
29. 26 - do not apologise
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.22.10)
it is not your problem if there are people who are either without a sense of humor or are so pathetic as to take everything seriously. if they are ridiculous enough to not know the difference between hyperbole and actual meaning, THEY should be mocked for their ignorance. don't encourage the idiots, this place is too humorless as it is. actually, anyone that takes these talkbacks seriously needs to have their head examined.
30. Mike , i don't take YOUR tb's seriously
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.22.10)
Most are NOT your business . From some people i take EVERYTHING seriously , even when they don't always THINK before writing .
