1. This is not news!!!
Israeli grandma   (09.24.10)
Its just being nosy about a sector of our society. It would be news if Haredi families were so poor that they could NOT by clothes for their families.
2. Do the math
blash ,   Jerusalem   (09.24.10)
If the average Hareidi family has 5 children then divide that 1300 NIS figure by 7 to get a little under 200 NIS per person. That's peanuts to get a new shirt and shoes, maybe a new suit instead. And if the main clothes buying period for the Hareidi public is before the High Holidays, I'd say that looks like people buying a new pair of shoes every 2 years, or a new suit every 2 years. What is this article supposed to try to say? That the Hareidi public spends so much money on clothes and then begs for food handouts? Do the math - these figures show the Hareidi public is PENNY-PINCHING on clothes and is spending its money wisely.
3. Hasidic buy clothes
roxie ,   Israel   (09.25.10)
Must be nice to get money for doing nothing, and be able to buy new clothes,I don't remember the last time my family had the money to be able to get new clothes at any place other than the local flea market !
4. Haredim buying clothes
Jaia Sara ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.25.10)
Do the maths,if a family has average of 5 to10 children,is not that much 1300 shekels per family, also counting that they use the same clothings ALL the rest of the season!!Is not luxury, believe me, is just what they need to begin the year, like everybody else.Whoever that feels envy at such a thing is a little bit of!!And also, not ALL haredim buy new, they are TONS that don't have money and they really don't buy,or receive from gemachim!!People, get a live!!
5. I think the point is that given the exceedingly
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (09.25.10)
low earnings of the majority of Charedi families, we non-Charedis are left asking where all their money comes from to buy clothes much less food, rent and transportation, etc. I think we all know that the Charedim hide their earnings, don't report them, gather social assistance, receive charitable contributions and implement frauds like collecting old age pensions for family members who are dead or who have moved back to the USA. The Charedim have become expert at fraud and this allows them to continue with their Torah study and their advocacy for their "rights" which have, unfortunately, become disgraceful. Between the demands of the Charedim and the Arabs, our country is being torn apart.
6. Clothing
Chaim ,   Jerusalem   (09.26.10)
1300 or 1500 shekels is nothing for huge families. Maybe shoes or a shirt, etc. Most poor families buy their clothes second-hand from gemachim at 1 -2 shekel per item. This article makes it look like chareidim waste money, which is untrue.
7. Fig Leaves!
Lioness ,   Israel   (09.26.10)
What is the point of this article would you rather a family of 5, 7 or eight go out and buy a new set of fig leaves. Go to Ramat Aviv or Savion and you will see people spend that much money on one article of clothing for one person!
8. clothes:Post-dated checks
dov epstein ,   efrat,Israel   (09.26.10)
Most purchases will be made with post-dated checks, and the time spent after the holidays will be for running around to keep the account solvent.these holidays are a time of joy, and the new clothes add to i. They are NOT buying brand names. Most of the clothes are bought at places like "Bazaar Strauss," which charges about 20-30 shekels a shirt. It makes me ill to see you Haredi-haters bad-mouth this sector of society. THEY spend any money they receive IN the country. How many of you buy foreign brand names? Or take int'l vacations? New cars? iPhones? iPads? Docker slacks? Our country isn't being torn apart by chareidim, but by accusations by people whose own sector of society own clout rights through every union, utility, and gov't job sectors.
9. What is different about hareidim
moti ,   rbs   (09.26.10)
Guys, YNET instigates trouble.. while its true that a large # of them dont work, a large percentage do work... alot work in jewlery, real estate, banking etc... what is different about hariedim and religous people in general is the amount of charity that is given out... for example, my cousing works for an american computer firm, he is making 150k, i did his taxes last year.. he gave away close to 1/3 to chariedi charity causes..this goes on day in and day out....so while alot of them are not making, they are learning torah which gives us the divine capability of making money to assist them...life works in circles... another interesting note- did you knw the religous especially the hariedi are the happiest people in the country bases on a pole i read 2 weeks ago!
10. these clothes last the whole year!
Johanna ,   tsfat   (09.26.10)
People buy new clothes in honour of the New Year and the clothes will last the whole year. As children grow all the time it's not unreasonable to buy them new clothes, shoes etc once a year. There are also lots of charity shops/ gemachim where people get new or nearly new clothes. In Tsfat there is a gemach which has nearly new clothes from America. Also people hand down clothes from one person to another.. I don't remember the last time I bought new clothes. I get all mine second-hand.. or 'pre-used' (as they say today) from friends. Also I'm sure secular people buy lots of new clothes too at this time of year. I don't really see the news value in this story.
11. This is not a lot of money
Chaya Cohen ,   Israel   (09.29.10)
Considering the size of their families, this is not a lot of money. Seculars often spend this amount on one item only. Most chareidim are very thrifty, so stop badmouthing them all of the time.
