1. Bike riding and Yom Kippur are synonymous!!
Talula ,   Israel   (09.16.10)
2. All the religious?
Golan ,   Modiin   (09.16.10)
Excuse me but isn't that a gross generalization? Isn't that like saying all Arabs are terrorists? I am sure there is one who isn't
3. mighty silly
zaga ,   san francisco, USA   (09.16.10)
is this really news? who cares?
4. secular fasting
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.16.10)
I am very pleased to hear that 50% of the secular are fasting Yom Kipur. This is far more than i thought.GMAR HATIMA TOVA to the secular and to all the Jews.
5. We are one people
Proud American Jew   (09.16.10)
It appears to me that not only is religiousity comparable in the two great Jewish communities but that the myths of one rapidly assimilating and the other becoming fanatically religious is erroneous as well. Perhaps next year I will organize an Israel solidarity bike ride on yom kippur in central and prospect parks ending in a break fast picnic!
6. Bicycle riding epitome of secular culture
Ilan ,   Ariel   (09.17.10)
Israel's primary contribution to modern Judaism.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.17.10)
Not observing anything the whole year , but Yom Kippour ! then they suddenly go to beth knesseth and fast ! and then coming home and eat non kosher food . for me it's 100 % hypocrisy . G'mar chatima Tova to all who believe in this .
9. Golan , ALL religious fast !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.17.10)
Exept those who may not for health reasons of course .

Hypocrisy would be if they say they fast, but they do not. They fast to stay connected with the 3000years and more chain from their family. In your case, your father or grandfather broke this chain,so you don t feel anymore the necessity to do so.I would recommand you to try it out.It is not so difficult, and you would gain a fine feeling of belonging to the long chain of our forefathers.Do it,you will not regret. And by doing that you are helping your grandchildren to do so,and to give them, this sense of belonging.GMAR HATIMA TOVA>dear Charles.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.17.10)
Saying that they fast , but don't do it , is NOT hypocrisy . It's telling a LIE ! Hypocrisy is doing something against your general behaviour , against what you say . I have'nt to do it to stay connected to my ancestors , i'll always be one descendant of them . Some of my grandchildren fast , and they know very well that i'm not observing torah laws [ exept kashrut at home ] They all also know that their grandfather is a honest person , and that's an example they have to follow . Again , G'mar Tov ,

I am really sorry i asked you to do something you do not believe in.I meant it good.Of course your grandchildren can be very proud of you.Honesty is a great quality, and also keeping kasher at home.I am pleased to hear that some of your grandchildren fast.Have lots of nahes of them.
13. I HAVE A QUESTION FOR RABBI OR ORTHODOX...
John ,   Europe   (09.17.10)
And I really am asking this, I do not know... On what grounds is riding the bicycle on Shabbat and/or Yom Tov forbidden? I've heard so many opinions. One is that it is like riding the animal - which is, unfortunately, not the same, because of giving the animal the rest and avoiding entering the situation to hurt the animal (with the riding whip, for example). To give bicycle the rest and to try to whip it is - foolish. So - can anybody help me here and tell me why, IN HALACHIC TERMS, preferably with some links to responsa or Talmud it is forbidden?
14. Bicycles on Yom Kippur
Maurice Makowsky ,   Israel   (09.17.10)
Bagels go with Lox. Corned Beef goes with Rye Bread but, what is the correlation with bicycles on Yom Kippur? Didn't see the Jews going out of Egypt on bicycles. Didn't see Moses biking up Mount Sinai to receive the 2 Tablet of Law. Didn't see the people travelling to the Temple during the 3 walking holidays (Passover, Succot & Shavout) biking to Jerusalem. This is a new custom that I can't find anywhere in the literature. This as stupid an idea as someone trying to import Hummus to Israel. Easy and Meaningful fast everyone. I am wondering when we travel up to Heaven if we do it on bicycles or a Harley-Davidson motorcycle? Guess I will just to wait and see!!!!
15. John - Europe - bicycle
Chaya ,   Tel Aviv   (09.17.10)
The reason is if the bicycle breaks one would be tempted to fix it - it is fixing which is not allowed.
16. You cannot pick and choose which mitzwote you will keep.
Eliyahu Konn   (09.17.10)
One must do his/her best to keep all mitzwote and then there is meaning in Yom HaKippurim. The rest are wasting their time and the true hypocrites. Got it in before Shabbat for the racist, 13th century Jews.
17. 16 , The racists 13th century Jews
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.18.10)
Are , for this fake convert supporter , the TRUE Jews , Orthodox or secular .
18. To # 12 , Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.18.10)
As you asked it me only out of good intentions , no problem for me . It's for "shomre Shabbat" relatives , and friends , that the kitchen at my home is kosher . They all know that outside my home i don't look at this , all great food is welcome then .
