31. there's an easy answer here
blash ,   Jerusalem   (09.19.10)
The easy answer is to massively invest in Israeli arms industries! We won't care if Russia sells these fancy schmancy missiles to Syria if we have technology that can defeat them. The only way to maintain a strategic edge is to maintain a military budget and the only way to ensure the supply of these new weapons for the lowest price is to develop them at home. We certainly have the talent to do so...
32. Israel arms.
Saberen ,   Denmark   (09.19.10)
Israel threatning Russia - get real. Israel is nothing more than a wee dot on the map compered to Russia. Israel is going down the road it paved when it sold high tec arms to Georgia knowing it was ment to be used in a conflict with Russia. It took Russia less than one week to destroy it all. Dont overestimate your self,- there are no way Israel can compere to Russia.
33. Israelis have become so delusional
Greg   (09.19.10)
to think they can compete with Russia in arms sales. Out of UAV's what are they going to sell? Uzi's, smart bombs? Common get real here before you get mama Russia really angry.

35. Correct response is to demand Russia removal from "Quartet"
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (09.19.10)
Israel should renounce all past commitments made to "Quartet", and refuse to acknowledge any further legitimacy of Quartet actions, unless Russia is booted and kept out of Mideast diplomacy. Russia can not resume trying to destroy the stste of Israel by providing this sort of offensive 1st strike weapon, which is actually intended to attack merchant ships trying to reach Israel's ports, which still playing the role of "diplomat" in the Quartet. In the absence of an immediate Obama move to maintain his promises of Israel's qualitative superiority, Israel must assume that US "security guarantees" in support of Israeli concessions made to Abbas will be worthless - and make none.

Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (09.19.10)
Advanced modern tanks, most better than what Russia has by miles - the Russian approach to armor has changed little over the years, with quantity trumping quality. Modern assault rifles, better than what most of the IDF still uses as its basic rifle, thanks to stockpiles of American M16's. The IMI TAR-21, AKA Tavor, in its many variants, is an excellent alternative to aging ex-Soviet arms. The IMI Negev light machine gun is also worth mentioning. Israel also produces cruise missiles, air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, numerous man-portable anti-tank and anti-armor launchpads, anti-aircraft missiles, UAV's of every shape and color you can imagine (and some you can't), and numerous anti-missile, anti-rocket, and combat tank defense systems, among other things. Some of them we sell. Some of them we don't. And hey, if there's an interest in the market, IMI and Rafael can always restart the fighter jet projects for export purposes. Light aircraft and small civilian jets only earn you so much. See, there's the thing - we make things. We make things in a rather clever way. So no, we can't rival the Russian military industrial complex in sheer amount of produced arms - but we can rival them in quality in many spheres. And if we need to go back to designing our defensive and offensive systems to specifically counter Russian-made arms, just like we had to do that in Soviet times, we'll... we'll do just that. Funny thing, diplomacy. It goes both ways.
39. 38 For Israel sake i hope your leaders
Sam   (09.19.10)
don't buy your nonsense but i am sure they won't cause they know better. All you mentioned are light scale toys amounting to very little. Regarding your tanks, jusdt so you know your DM is searching the world for partners to take on the Merkava, so far with no sucess. The Merkava has proven that even Hizbo can do it in. Go take good seep of a strong Turkish coffee, take a cold shower and come down to reality. Don't for a second contemplate starting arms competition with the Russians.
40. Russia and arming Iran
Sabra ,   Canada   (09.20.10)
Russia will give iran the S300 AA missiles. ISrael alrewady has data to override its prograsmming. remember the greek IAF manoevres last year with S300 from Greece standing in for Iran. Well TRussia wants to be a bully ok. Israel has a few tricks up their sleeve that will irritate teh crap out of the russkies
41. the nation that sold nuclear bombs to South Africa
seth ,   deering, nh   (09.20.10)
Israel sold nuclear weapons to the racist regime South Africa. It sold US airplane technology to Red China. Now we are supposed to believe they presently are passing up opportunities to make a quick shekel by not selling weaponry to Russia adversaries, such as Georgia. Ooops, Israel already sells anything Georgia can pay for. This threat is silly.
42. #39 Toys, you say... amusing.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (09.20.10)
Israel had a 30-year long policy of not selling its tanks to any foreign military, keeping the tech well at home. It's only in 2010 that we started considering selling our most advanced Merkava Mk. 4 for sale. A few months of a sale pitch don't produce instant sales Further, Hezb didn't do any real harm to newer-model tanks. The older Mk.2 and Mk.3 tanks are still the most common in the IDF's armor brigades due to internal funding, and adoption of the Mk.4 has been slow - and the Mk.4 is state-of-the-art. The active anti rocket and anti missile defense system developed for armor also saw adoption difficulties before the Second Lebanon War, but you can Hezb for showing the need for it. Tanks aren't light toys. Neither are cruise missiles, anti-missile defense systems capable of defending against nuclear strikes, very advanced forms of airborne missiles as compared to what most any other military industry in the world has on offer... toys indeed. So in terms of markets? Sure we can compete, so long as the country we're selling to doesn't have some kind of super-binding contract with the Russians for exclusive sales. And if we're going to be selling to people the Russians don't like (which covers almost every neighbor Russia has and would like to control, by and large), they're not likely to be buying much in the way of Russian-made arms as it is, so no worries there. That's just it, Sam. We don't need to starts any arms contest. On a piece-by-piece comparison, anything we already have on sale is better than what the Russians have. We've already won. We can't train armies across the world how to handle Russian military strategy (which pretty much involves crushing everything in sight, and bringing armed militias along for the ride), that's their problem. All we can do is make our systems even better, and if the Russians are keen on arming our enemies again, then our systems will become custom-made to counter theirs - much like during the Cold War. And that will be that.
43. #41Don't let the facts confuse you, good sir.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (09.20.10)
I can see that you have your own little version of reality. Yes, Israel used to have military dealings with South Africa - Europeans left us with little choices as to who we could deal with, after they used us and abandoned us to die, but we never did sell any nuclear technology to South Africa - they wanted it, mind, that much is correct. Neither did we sell US technology to China - we wanted to sell our *own* technology to China, and saw that deal scuttled due to diplomatic pressure. That was a major potential source of revenue, but the US didn't want China to have UAV's with the ability to seek out radar installations, so we lost that particular bid. Good diplomacy and strategic relations for the US, loss of good relations with China for us, and you lying. Yeah, that pretty much covers it.
44. So whats new, you sell to US enemies
EyesWideOpen ,   Australia   (09.20.10)
Since when has it bothered Israel to sell weapons to anyone, after stealing missile guidance microchip from US you sold to China...So I see you are making still more friends in the world Israel, Russia is one friend I would not want to piss off, you may have 200nukes, Russia has 12,000, It may loan a few to Syria, Iran & Lebanon like it did with the Cubans, in fact one for each is enough to completely destroy Israel :o (
45. LOL@35
EyesWideOpen ,   Australia   (09.20.10)
Yes what a brilliant idea, keep Russia out of mid east politics. Most sane people would view Russia as the only country able to keep a very close eye on the Iranians and stop them from getting the bomb the jews so fear. The other thing you might want to consider is that Russia is doing Israel a HUGE favor by arming her enemies to the extent that Israel will be forced to cancel plans of attacking Iran,Syria,Lebanon, you see most analysts worth listening to have no doubts that any such attack would mean the end of Israel, finito, kaput. So you should be quietly thanking the Russians for keeping your insane leaders from committing national suicide.
46. HUGE mistake by Israel
mystic ,   new york city   (09.20.10)
Russia is like a big grey elephant who never forgets. It smashed Israel's face by destroying the Georgian airstrips it intended to use to attack Iran from, after Israel armed and encouraged a Georgian conflict with Russia.. Do NOT mess with Russia, which would not hesitate to drop an atomic bomb utterly wiping out Tel Aviv if israel brings conflict near to its borders by starting conflict with Iran. Israel acted very stupidly with Turkey over the flotilla and now is starting the same arrogance and stupidity with Russia. Israel is destroying itself.l

48. Peek in the future
Cogito man ,   Southold US   (09.21.10)
One most important thing is missing here. Future. Many in Israel here forgot that future looks very bleak for Israel. There is simple reason for that.... US is finished as leading economic-military force. Kaputt, for a long time. Israel cannot survive long on it's own without powerful allay like US. Hence we have "peace talks". Israel has strong military but it is crippled in another sense... has no depth of maneuver. Israel is SMALL.It does not take much to wipe all what is above the ground no defense system can protect that that. Israel has simple choice in its future....do honest and speedy peace with it's neighbors or cease to exist. A year from now, no Arab country will WANT to talk to Israel...they all know that. Anyway no war is necessary to achieve Arab goals...with the collapse of US international community will do that for them by say universal economic boycott. Israel has no true friends, including US. They still can blackmail US politicians but they can't do it in the next historical phase where there will not be any leading superpower in charge. No sane person can think that China or India even Europe (that probably will split again in next few years) will stick their neck for Israel. They are pragmatic, resources of Arab countries trump anything Israel can offer. Time will tell but Israel has no time left to waste if it wants to exist.
49. Russia has already warned Israel
EyesWideOpen ,   Australia   (09.22.10)
Russia's military chief of staff said Saturday that Moscow could use nuclear weapons in preventive strikes in case of a major threat, the latest aggressive remarks from increasingly assertive Russian authorities. "We have no plans to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons," General Yuri Baluyevsky said. So what part of that statement does Israel not "get"?? we have 200 warheads (most will not reach boost phase due to S'300/400 interdiction) vs 12.000 warheads including the latest stealth bulava. Prior to that escalation tens of thousands of missiles from Hizbullah, Syria and the IRCG may well render the nuke option un-neccessary. Israels pissant arrow, patriot and iron shield missile defence would be exhausted in the first 15mins of any such attack leaving thousands of missiles to rain down apon her. Israel better learn how to make friends as well at it makes enemies, fast :o (
50. #49 We are not threatening Russia with military force.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (09.22.10)
At most, we are saying that two can play the arms trade game. Further, don't be too alarmed by empty threats of nuclear force - Russia won't be using first-strike nuclear options any time soon, if ever. The moment any country in the world launches an ICBM is the moment at least five other countries launch ICBM's to turn it into a wasteland. The Cold War taught us all this much. Unfortunately, the Iranians never paid attention during the Cold War. And so far, it looks like the North Korean rulers are too insane to care about potential consequences.
