1. Neither the law nor religion can help to end this tragedy!
Salma ,   Palestine   (09.26.10)
When Parents know how to deal with their children and their daughters, according to different age groups, when they treat the child as a child .... teenager as a teenager ......and Young men and women as a Young men and women...will contribute to gradual reduction of this phenomenon, which unfortunately exist in my society, to me it is dangerous sign refers to many social problems :( The ideal age for getting married for me : Girls - 20 Boys - 25 SO, PLEASE GUYS AND GIRLS, GET MARRIED AFTER 25 AND 20 FOR A HEALTHY AND ENJOYABLE MARRIAGE LIFE ; )
2. Strongly disagree
David ,   Israel   (09.26.10)
Trying to adjust the legal system for the stupid hurts the intelligent... Specifically, 1. "We must align ourselves with international norms." - What international norms is she talking about??? 2."Studies have also proven a strong connection between early marriage physical violence. This usually occurs in closed communities and we as a state must protect our children." - Correlation does not imply causation. In closed communities all sorts of things are wrong. Not a reason to hurt others. Finally, a much bigger problem is that many people are not allowed to marry in Israel at all, including Jews who lack "proof" of their Jewishness, men that are not circumcised, etc.
3. my grandmother too
lenny ,   los vegas   (09.26.10)
was married at sixteen, the other one at eighteen. they had good marriages. I married late, my marriage stinks. It depends on many factors, but today most people have lousy marriages. Time have changed
4. "my brothers married cousins of ours only 16 years old"
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (09.26.10)
It's hardly surprising that so many Arab and Muslim girls are married off at such an early age. After all, according to Muslim tradition, Aisha was betrothed to Mohammed when she was only SIX, while the marriage was consummated when she was NINE. Some Muslims are understandably embarrassed by that tradition, but it's a fact that in the region enacting and enforcing laws against such marriages is tough. First cousin marriages are also common in some closed communities (the Bedouin and Druze, for example), and as a result birth defects are more common among them. And polygamy among the Bedouin is even today widely practiced. Good luck trying to prohibit either of these practices.
5. isn't this better than
Marwan ,   Amman, Jordan   (09.26.10)
how the average female israeli teen turns into a slut at the age of 16?
6. #5 just slander Marwan
Israeli grandma   (09.26.10)
The "average female Israeli teen" in your fantasies Marwan is not the same as the ordinary Israeli female in our streets. Agreed some of the current fashions for young women are trashy, but these young women are not badly behaved. Seemingly your sexual fantasies are being projected onto our girls instead of the carefully guarded and restricted girls in Amman who are unavailable to you socially. You should know that there are plenty of sluttish Arab girls to be met with in Europe, who have low self-esteem because of the way they were brought up in Arab homes.
7. For #5 Marwan
Devora ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.26.10)
Really dear, and you know that the average 16 year old in Israel is a slut because.........? If you live in jordan, dont make sweeping and inaccurate statements about our culture. Marrying off girls at 14, which I do see in Israel, in the muslim community, is disgusting and shows me how well the women are treated in 'your' religion. Do me a favour, return to your kitchen and bear lots of chidren, be a slave to your husband and we in Israel in the jewish community will carry on being 21st century modern women!!
8. It's only possible in backwards societies
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.26.10)
Be the muslim or Jewish . Most of those are still children when forced to marry by family m,embers . The law will not change much , they'll find the way to conturn it . To 5 , do you know who your father is ?
9. To8Charles
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.26.10)
In jewish religion it is forbidden to force a child to marry.
10. To 9 Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.26.10)
Maybe , but it happens that the bride even never met the groom , that the parents arrange the "couple" , and that the children don't dare to oppose .
11. "Legalized" molestation/child trafficing
Me ,   asdf   (09.26.10)
Yes, that's what it is. What kind of a culture looks the other way at such a thing? This is the muzzies way of pumping out more muzzies into Israel so as to eventually effect politics in the country. It is disgusting and perverse and they will answer to the true God for their practices.
12. Keepin' it feudal in the digital age
