1. This only looks extreme
Loyal Jew ,   Israel   (09.24.10)
In reality, it is halacha without having to fight off treif Western influences. It should become the law in Israel.
2. #1: DO NOT INSULT HALAKHÀH!!!!
Rabbi Jochanan ,   Gush Chalav, Israel   (09.24.10)
Halakhà has NOTHING to do with GOYISHE, FOREIGN CUSTOMS (even if they are Muslim Taliban-like they are still goyim). Simchath Beth HaShoevàh was NOT a male only happening, and ALL the People gathered from everywhere, from outside Jerusalem, not just outside the neighborhoods! Those Eda Charedith kind of people are the ones who call shiksa any Jewish woman who is not dressed like their kind, who call sheigez any Jewish man who is not dressed like a penguin, and who call non Ashkenazi Jews Schwartzes and "bo'ale' niddot" !!! THEY are the ones who got lost in the Xtian forest for too long and degenerated inventing new and FOREIGN learning methods three hundred years ago (pilpul) and gone against ChaZa"L (ben chamesh laMIqrà, ben 'eser laMishnà, ben Shelosh'esrè leMitswoth, ben chamesh'esrè leTalmud) and teach Ghemara to children; and have absorbed even the color worn by Catholic Priests and ALL Kohane' 'Avodàh Zaràh: BLACK, a color NEVER worn by Tannaim if not for shame; a color forbidden - ESPECIALLY ON SHABBATH! - by Rishonim (i.e.: see Rabbenu Bachye), and Acahronim (i.e.: see Ben Ish Chai). THEY are the SHANDA to Our People, not AMCHA!
3. 2 Thats right, no matter how ridiculous it is dont insult it
Tahl   (09.24.10)
Most Halaka may be silly, but it is our silly Halaka!
4. I hope a million people join them!
Ben ,   Chutzlaaretz   (09.24.10)
Please come out and support this march! Time or these misogynist throwbacks to see the light! I can assure you that the judge Devorah would have soemthing to say about their take on our faith.
5. Beware #4!
Israeli 2   (09.25.10)
Dvorah the prophetess would definitely not like women to oppose men or do men's task. The Charedic zealots are not perfect, but they are not mysogonists as you claim. Women of those days were the true great feminists, not today's Vashtis.
6. These residents deserve the same consideration as the Arabs
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.25.10)
Kikar Shabbat is legally no different than the Temple Mount. The Waqf "holds the key" like a local hero may have a "key to the city" awarded him by a city mayor. All gates are controlled by Israeli police who decide who goes up and when. The Temple Mount was taken in war then annexed by Israel in 1967 and is public property, while Kikar Shabbat was taken in war then annexed by Israel in 1968 and is public property. The police contolling and patrolling the Mount set aside those looking too Jewish (this is true) and parade them on a special route with special regulations as "to not offend the sensibilities of the Arabs" in a manner most remeniscent of Germany 1939 - even up to the uniformed Jews enforcing the anti-Jewish regulations. The legal residents of Mea Shearim have posted signs declaring that groups passing through their neighborhood severely offend its residents. We will see if Jerusalem Mayor, Nir Barkat, can keep true to his promise of "one law to one people" (i.e. Israelis) and will use police force to protect the legal residents of the neighborhood from the "offensive" nature of these marches that will hurt the feelings of its residents.
7. the real jews are sephardic and Mizrahi jews
(09.25.10)
Judaism is a tolerant religion .who do these idiots think they are? ....
8. frauenrein streets
moron ,   galut   (09.25.10)
torah study is supposed to make us smarter---a woman is not immodest just for being out in a public place and those who think so need to curb their own 'evil inclination'--it seems they did not adopt this plan but left will use occasion to agitate 4 sure
9. "The march is not meant to be a provocation against anyone,"
rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.25.10)
Yes it is. It's a blatant aggressive provocation and it can only go badly. I have no time for Eta Hardit, but those who plan marches like these only want trouble. If they really want to help these women, there are quiet, far more effective was to do it than to create a war.
10. #7
Bob ,   Jerusalem   (09.25.10)
" Judaism is a tolerant religion" Funny, but the Rambam (sfardi) says that back in the day the halacha was, if you refused to do mitzvos, the police can beat you into it. Today, it's not enforced, because people or not on the spiritual level to make such enforcement... however, you don't see too much of your "tolerance" there... especially coming from a sfardi. Learning ... it's a good thing... especially before saying something as untrue as you did.
11. Dear seculars, leave us alone!
Vladimir ,   Jerusalem   (09.25.10)
Your hostility and your blatant provocations will not help. But if you want a war against us, the charedim, you'll get it and you will loose it for sure. G-d is on our side.
12. To11Vladimir
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.25.10)
Calm down,Vladimir,G-d is very against war between jews.
13. I think these men want Jewish men to be gay.
Sarah ,   Los Angeles   (09.26.10)
No, I'm not kidding. This extreme segregation of women indicates to me that they are trying to teach their male children to be homosexual. Also teaching their male children to hate women, to think of women as nothing more than breeding cattle who don't deserve to step outside their own home, and who must be kept in a pen in the shul not able to see or participate, kept on the back of all buses -- but even more than that, this extreme marginalization of females is going to turn the males towards each other with their sexuality rather than towards women. Even the mechitza is not Jewish - the Jews adopted this custom from the MUSLIMS. Yep. True fact there. Check it. I've got old pictures of Jewish men and women worshipping at the Wall TOGETHER, no mechitza whatsoever. And nobody seems to be ready to rape any of the women there; apparently the men actually took responsibility for their own yetzer back then instead of punishing the women by segregation and marginalization. And acting like Muslims, yes these men are. Specifically, they appear to be evolving (or devolving) into a Jewish version of the Taliban and Sharia Law's attitude towards women. If they want to act like Muslims, then go live in Iran and be Muslims. How long will the women there put up with this outrageously dehumanizing nastiness aimed at them by their OWN husbands, fathers, etc.? That's the question. And don't blame the boys when they turn out to be homosexual from having no contact with females.
14. To Rebecca #9
Sarah ,   Los Angeles   (09.26.10)
These women didn't start any war. The men who are trying to treat women like the Taliban started the war. The women need to END it however they can before they end up in burkas, not allowed to leave their homes without a male, and "honor killed" for the slightest imagined breach of "modesty". Because that's what these men are doing, taking everything in the direction of Muslim Sharia Law, and making it their own. I'd say that's a pretty good start to a war, wouldn't you?
15. a reply to the negative posts
observer   (09.26.10)
The ferocity of the negative talkbacks leaves me astonished, and demonstrates just how thoughtless and bigoted anti-religious sentiment is. Forget the ridiculous and irrelevant excuses. The forefathers of the inhabitants of Meah Shearim built the area with their own hands a hundred years before there was a state. They have a right to live there in peace and deserve respect for their choice of lifestyle without outside interference or provocation. The tone of the talkbacks demonstrates a total lack of appreciation not only for the lifestyle, but also for the conditions under which those live. The area is severely overcrowded and the 150-year-old basic amenities are poorly maintained by the municipality, despite premium property-taxes. These celebrations used to be the highlight of the year for the kids and served instead of vacations. The influx of foreign students and tourists has altered that beyond recognition, and several groups have abandoned the practice altogether, thereby depriving the kids of yet more. Anyone who has actually seen the many hundreds of sightseers who flood the area every night has no doubt as to why steps are being taken to restrict entry. There is a severe noise problem until late into the night. Hawkers line the streets. Local residents are effectively confined to their homes every evening in what is supposed to be the most relaxed and joyous festival of all. Security is non-existent. It was never meant to be a tourist attraction and the residents have every right to object to gatecrashers.

Bob ,   Jerusalem   (09.26.10)
"Even the mechitza is not Jewish - the Jews adopted this custom from the MUSLIMS. Yep. True fact there. Check it. " It blows me away how people with no idea about Judaism feel that they know what they are talking about. "Segregation" between men and women, ironically, is dated by to the Beis HaMikdash (BEFORE MUSLIMS) during the Simchas Beis HaShoavah. Yep. True fact there. Check it.
17. #1 its not Halacha its radical ignorance!
(09.26.10)
and that's on a good day! On a bad day like last nignt when haradi men beat up a "properly" dressed Jewish woman it is anti-human behaviour!
18. To 12 , Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.26.10)
This wladimir is in fact a "pen name" for an ignorant fanatic woman . One of those who , contrary to you , make seculars become intolerant towards religious people .
19. Orly # 6 . No Jews on temple mount
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.26.10)
There are Religious authoroties who say that Jews should NOT go on the temple mount , because the exact emplacement of the Holy Ark is not known . Years ago , there was even a Religious Jew at the entrance of the Temple Mount , on the Kotel corner , who shouted : Jews do not go here ! . So , there is a big difference between mea shearim and the Har Habait
20. To18Charles A woman?
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.26.10)
21. Which Temple, Bob?
Sarah ,   Los Angeles   (09.26.10)
Would that be Solomon's Temple, in which the ASHERA TREE (representing a feminine goddess) was placed NEXT TO the Ark of the Covenant IN the Holy of Holies for hundreds of years? 1. Asherah introduced into the Temple in Jerusalem by Solomon and his son King Rehoboam, in or around 928 B.C. (the Hebrews had actually been worshipping the Asherah outside of Jerusalem along with YHVH for about 300 years prior to this) 2. The Asherah statue was worshipped in the Temple for 35 years after King Rehoboam placed it there, until King Asa removed it in 893 B.C. 3. The Asherah statue was restored to the Temple by King Joash in 825 B.C. and remained there for a full century until King Hezekiah removed it in 725 B.C. 4. 27 years later the Ashera was put back in the Temple by King Manasseh who installed it in 698 B.C. 5. The Asherah statue remained for 78 more years until the great YHVH Reformist King Joshiah removed it in 620 B.C. 6. When King Joshiah died 11 years later, the Asherah was put back in the Temple yet again where it remained until the Temple was destroyed 23 years later in 586 B.C. So, it appears that out of the 370 years that Solomon's Temple stood in Jerusalem, the statue of Ashera was present for no less than 236 of those years and her worship was a part of the legitimate religion approved and led by the King, the Court, and the Priesthood during those times, and opposed only by a few Prophets who cried out against it at long intervals. So it actually stood in the Temple for more years than not. THAT Temple, Bob??

PK ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.27.10)
I don't agree with the Chareidim on many things, but one thing for sure: the way some secular women dress is truly disgusting. They might as well go around naked - it's almost the same thing.
23. to Thinkagain , YES !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.28.10)
24. Chareidim always in bad light
Gershon ,   London   (09.28.10)
A desperate plea to all those who support the march can i ask you why is it that whatever we do we are always wrong. As soon as a scandelous story involving sex breaks in our community you are the first ones to highlight our failures, but then when we take action to prevent it like stopping woman with short skirts enter our neighberhood we are also condemmed so what exactly do you want us to do?
25. To23 Charles How do you Know?
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.28.10)
Vladimir is a russian man s name.
26. Thinkagain , what's in a name ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.28.10)
What is your pen name saying ? Nothing .
27. re: 24. Chareidim always in bad light
gyuri ,   Connecticut, USA   (09.28.10)
Gershon, perhaps the men who get overexcited by short skirts and commit sex crimes should be castrated. You don't hear about any women attacking young men for wearing attractive tzitzits or fur hats. Don't blame the victim; punish the criminal. Isn't that the principle of Jewish justice?
28. To26Charles
thinkagain ,   jerusalem   (09.28.10)
As there is nothing in a name, you decided that Vladimir ,who has a man s name, is a woman.Amazing.Nothing is less sure.Vladimir s agressivity is more of a masculine than feminine nature.
29. We have gone Wromg
Sonya ,   New York   (09.28.10)
Not being a religious woman myself i must give thumbs up to the ultra orthadox this time. Regarding the wider issue of the way the ultra orthodox dress we must remember that it is US who have gone wrong not them. Just look at the pictures of non jewish woman 50 years ago and you will see that even they thenon jews realise what modesty means to a woman. So it is up to us to answer why we have strayed from the path, the orthodox are just continuing what our grandparents took as the norm.
30. Thinkagain
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.29.10)
Even withj your "name" , did you once think that i can have good reasons to say what i say ? Don't be a "zieverer" , hak nischt im tschainik . I did'nt decide anything You have never read some very agressive talck backs by women ? Or you did'nt understand or forgot them ?
