1. France's bloody past
David ,   Jerusalem   (10.04.10)
It's not only against the Jews but also against many other people all over the world. France must face its bloody massacres in Indochina, Algeria, and genocide in Rwanda.
2. Does this really surprise anyone?
Josh S ,   USA   (10.05.10)
During their post WWII housecleaning, the French themselves threw Petain in jail for life for acts similar to this. The idea that the Vichy government in general or Petain in particular were anything other than Nazi stooges has been put to bed decades ago - again by the French themselves. The French have many faults but hiding their dirty laundry isn't one of them. David #1 has already had his wish come true.
3. thanks for the info, very interesting,

I read a bio of some jews who converted to catholism, at that time it didn't save them from being send to the death kamp in Elsass, you have to understand that there was huge immigration from Paris at the time, even chritians immigrated because of what the Nazis did in Paris, it became ghost city, but sadly the dislike to Germans didn't prevented the catholics French from handing over jews to Germans.
4. Death camps in Elsass ?
Remi ,   Paris   (10.05.10)
The area had been annexed to Germany in 1940-1944 and, as far as I know, there was only one concentration camp there, the Struthof, which specialised in political opponents, not Jews. Some catholics had no qualms about handing over Jew to the Nazis, some took immense risks to help them, it's not a religion thing.

Four out of 80 bishops condemned the anti Jews "laws" . In France it was not the same risk as in Poland , or in a lesser way , in Holland , to hide Jews . Some died , yes . In France , as in all other occupied countries , collaborators were often worse than the germans themselve .
6. No doubt, Charles #5
Remi ,   Paris   (10.05.10)
But considering that, as stated in the article; "Nevertheless, of all Nazi-occupied countries, France was the one where "the Jewish community suffered the least tragic harm," said Klarsfeld. " , why this obsession about France ?

"Nevertheless, of all Nazi-occupied countries, France was the one where "the Jewish community suffered the least tragic harm," said Klarsfeld. " That distinction actually belongs to Denmark. Their Jewish community there survived almost intact. Why the obsession with France? Good question. Belgians and Dutch behaved the same as the French under German occupation but their collaborators are less condemned and their patriots are less celebrated. Why is there such an obsession in the international media with everything Israel does wrong?

France had , and has , a big Jewish population , is an important west European country . France's Vichy governement collaborated intensively with nazi germany . It took France almost 50 years to acknowledge the role "l'etat Francais" played in the deportation of Jews [ Chirac 1995 ] Regarding "obsession" with France's past . May i return your question ? WHY this worldwide obsession with Israel ?
9. #3Christians not involved as such
Raphael ,   Netanya   (10.06.10)
The filthy handing of Jews to the Nazis was mainly french police's work: creating files, spoliations, arrests, jailing and transport. The Catholics were initially unconcerned by the Jews' ordeal. However, after "bad" news for the Reich came from Stalingrad&El Alamein, even police (except some nazi fanatics who presently turn into "propalestinians") suddenly started dragging feet. eg: Mitterrand.
10. to #9 wrong from bio I have read many chritians
ghostq   (10.06.10)
catholics snitched to Nazis in order to get a piece of bread, you see the situation under nazi regim in france was bad, really bad, that was nazi revenge on what the French did to Germany after ww1, and the nazis used it in full force, the civilians chritians couldn't get food they had to have tight "budget" for basic needs like bread and milk, and nazis encourage the snitching behavior by giving extra goods to whom every give them jew, so many French chritians used that option. anyway what nazis did is so dwarfisch compare to the 22 million people the communist USSR did to other nations around, and that is only during stalin era in reality the numbers r much higher.

His behaviour during WWII was very controversial , you can't say that he changed when war outcom seemed to change . Some French already opposed the anti Jewish laws , even before the nazis attacked the USSR . They became more and more involved when the anti Jewish laws , by petain , were hardened and the deportations began , thus before the Russian victory at Stalingrad or the El Alamein battle . Yes , the catholics were not so concerned in the beginning , later on , they began to be involved , mostly the lower clergy . The protestants , most of them , as they also were a "minority" , were more helpfull .
