"Israel, with its low level of discipline and high measure of individuality and ego" ... not smart, eh?

- COULD THIS NOT BE A RESULT OF TOTALITARIAN SOCIALISM - Culture of modesty, hierarchy In a word – modesty. The Chinese people are too modest and that inhibits them from engaging in effective team work without having their egos be in the way. Modesty also prevents the Chinese worker from standing up to others in the work place, coming up with new ideas, initiating, solving problems alone and eventually leading innovation. A study held in China this year shows that the main attributes lacking in the Chinese worker are interpersonal communication skills, problem solving and decision making. The two last ones are critical in terms of development and innovation and prevent the worker from expressing new lines of thought, leaving the task solely to the senior executive. One person, however cannot be the sole source of ideas and innovation. The Chinese culture is a culture of modesty and respect for the elder. It does not encourage forwardness and boldness, but the complete opposite. It holds hierarchy in high regard and shuns criticism. This causes a situation where all responsibility is placed on the higher ranks which leads to conservatism, lack of imagination and original thinking. CHINA THE OLDEST ENDURING CULTURAL NATION, AND FIRST IN INOVATION IN MANY THINGS. I THINK THE DECLINE CULMINATED DURING CHINAS COMMUNISM. BUT WHY DO BUSINESS WITH CHINA/MAGOG - Ezekiel 38 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2"Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him Arn.
4. Delusional
John ,   Jerusalem   (10.09.10)
How can this guy seriously be teaching anything to anyone? During a visit by the Israeli trade minister, nice things were said about Israel. That's kind of usual. The fair was sponsored by the Israeli consulate in Guangzhou. No wonder it didn't single out the US or South Korea. And if you think the Chinese will ever pay attention to someone that comes along and says that they are too hindered by "their own culture of modesty, hierarchy and intolerance to criticism" and that they have all the answers, then you are living in a fools paradise. It's not, incidentally, what Bill Gates says. He says that the Microsoft innovation centre in Beijing is more effective than the on in California. I strongly suspect Mr Reshef has never been to China. This sort of patronising neo-colonial claptrap is just the sort of thing that puts the backs up of the Chinese.
5. "OH HOW I LOVE MYSELF, WE ARE GREAT"
(10.09.10)
"oh israel is sooo great and superb and so individual just like california is.." israel still has a important problem with the arabs and the whole world basically still hates jews. i don't know if the chinese know this but i am sure they are not that stupid. israel should first solve its own problems.
6. good article but half right
jade ,   Jerusalem   (10.09.10)
It seems that Chinese markets are the most future direction for Israeli companies if they want to continue earning money. The influence will be larger from China to Israel than the other way around.

so many Europeans hate Jews, oh well. Europe is falling with time both in economical power and numbers. Now asia is turning to the world's next leading power with mainly China and India. In eastern/southtern Asia anti-semitism almost doesn't exist so the racism problem just isn't going to do that of of an effect in tomorrow's world.
9. good article, but I hope the Chinese stay modest
(10.09.10)
The Israeli Huzpah may be good for innovation but it's kind of disgusting living among people so full of themselves as most Israelis are (and I'm an Israeil).
10. China
Mark ,   USA   (10.09.10)
I appreciate this article, showing the budding relationship with the future World Power, China. Israel has been a vassal state of the United States for too long. Good to see Israel is broadening its relationships with upcoming countries such as China and India!
11. working with the Chinese
Arn ,   Yehud, Israel   (10.09.10)
I have worked and continue to work with Chinese in both Hong Kong and China proper. Perhaps it is has just been my good fortune but I have found them to be wonderful people - very serious, very astute, eager to accommodate, and honest to a fault. However there are serious cultural differences which westerners - not only Israelis - cannot easily comprehend. First and foremost the complete removal of ego. Everything must include extended apologies- even if such requires invention. Even when receiving praise you must insist that you are not worthy of this praise. Self-praise and self-aggrandizement kills every attempt at meaningful communication. The Chinese read thoughts. They often express uncertainty with silence - which a westerner translates as rejection and a negative attitude - but which they expect you to understand in lieu of words. They are a wonderful people bearers of an ancient and awe inspiring culture. True, the westerner will find flaws in their submission to a rigid hierarchic mindset. But respect for elders is not always a bad thing.

13. Arabs do not lack immodesty
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (10.09.10)
They will boast, brag and bluff about everything, however they lack anything else Chinese and Jews have, and this will keep remaining their downfall.

Forget technological warfare, how about ECONOMIC warfare. Israel is a small westernized country. Good target practice to see if they can buy up Israeli companies and heft some control over this small "manageable" economy. Majority stockholder wins!
16. yep - China is the place to be
bob ,   NZ   (10.10.10)
Although this author may sound chauvinist and patronising the Chinese themselves are aware of the problem he addresses. re relations with Israel: The Chinese people have more insight into the complexities of world affairs than the average American or European who gets his opinions from ''news'' services like Fox or The Guardian. Like Israel , China is constantly criticised by people overseas who have no understanding of the unique problems which it confronts Unlike Israel , China is also criticised by religious ''nutters'' who think that some verse or other in the bible is talking about China. I was waiting for some Ynuts to post their offensive ignorance here but the article hasnt attracted many comments. China is now NZs biggest trading partner after Australia. The relationship with China has been a life-saver for NZ . Israel can benefit too from this booming market of 1.3 billion people. Chinese are every bit as intelligent , and gifted as Jews so, when dealing with them, it would be wise to adopt a bit more modesty than this article displays...
17. So how does the writer explain Japans success?
Chas. ,   Los Angeles   (10.10.10)
Japan is a society that is even more conformist than China, but managed to do quite well in science and engineering with a lot less available in resources and population than has China. Israel on the other hand, has had been able to draw on a talented and educated diaspora and billions of dollars in contributions and reparations. Of course, this is not the full story of a society's success, but it is more than jewish individualism and chutzpah.
18. Israeli chutzpah a hot commodity in China
Calipe Chong ,   Singapore   (10.10.10)
I will like to share my view from a Chinese Singaporean perspective. Firstly Chinese advent to seek higher technology resulted from its matured low cost manufacturing. Japan, South Korea and Taiwan had gone through the same phase in the 1980’s after too producing cheap and copied products to the global market. They sent their best students and technocrats to the Western world to learn its technologies and business practices. They are now the leading semiconductor, consumer electronics and computer manufacturers. Thus China seeking technology cooperation with Israel comes from nature of growth. If one reads local Chinese newspapers, he could find many articles appreciating the technological advancement in Israel. China is also seeking technologies in US and Germany. The Americans shuts the door while the German is very wary. As for the modesty shown by the Chinese, there are two possible reasons. Firstly the Confucian teaching advocates modesty as a virtue for mankind. One should also give due respect to elders by not questioning his wisdom. This is widely accepted by the Chinese. The other reason is the way the Chinese had endured under the regime of the imperial rule of the supreme emperors. Through thousands of years, the rulers, government officers and landlords ruled with iron fists and did not tolerate insubordination and criticism. It is one way to demonstrate their power and exert fear in others to obey. It has become an instinctive behavior for the Chinese to accept the instruction from the superiors. However with the ease of communication and influx of western culture, many Chinese begin to stand up to question what they do not accept or believe in. The Chinese, by race, is a very pragmatic person. The Western countries were also critical when the Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese progress aggressively and seem to pose a formidable threat to the Western world three decades ago. Now the world is gaining comfort of living and lifestyles from affordable products made by these advanced Asian countries. These “yellow” Asian are humble people striving to make a living and understand the need to deliver good quality products which consumers want. They want their wife and children to enjoy the same standard of living found in the western world.
19. What I know
Agent Rhino ,   USA   (10.11.10)
Having travelled, lived and interacted with Chinese in many countries in Asia, I can summarize them as follows: very practical and profit orientted, one of the best business minds, they fight to pick up restaurant tabs (not a bad thing "it is more blessed to give..."), they have a strong hierachy working under leadership which is needed in their culture given the ancient problems governing such a large nation (not a problem today with modern communication/transportation, they value education, they seek to apply and utilize new technologies immediately, and they do not have any goals of imperialism outside their national boundaries. One of the similarities betwen them and Jews is money management and education.
20. #17 Chas.
moshe ,   Tivon   (10.11.10)
#17 YES the Japaese are industrious and self-disciplined, as a result any technological innovation is vastly improved by the Japanese. The problem is that Japan is a single culture ; 99.9% of the population born and bred in Japan. Why is that a problem? I am not sure. But facts speak for themselves; cameras, transistor radios, TV, computers, telscopes, optical equipment, lasers, gas engine, diesel engine, electric cars, aircraft, space vehicles ...on and on ... were invented in the West ...the Japanese often vastly improve the manufacturing and design but they didn't (CAN'T ??) invent new ideas ! Name one thing that Japan invented? moshe
21. Chutzpah in China
Andre Daie ,   Gladstone MO USA   (10.12.10)
Chinese and Japanes are modest but stern. Chutzpah is an indecent act in their culture. NO CHANCE for Caipac and Jaipac in these countries. Israel ! Stop dreaming and forget about it.

Inyaki ,   Bilbao, Basque   (10.13.10)
How smart we are, how handsome and tall. How quick we are, we are so smart , we outsmart ourselves, full of chutzpah So clever, so inteligent, full of Jewish geneous. Everybody enveys us. A bunch of suckers, "frayerim". As we used to say in the army, in the good old days when the army was still the army: the frayerim never die, they just go and come. "ha frayerim, einam metim, hem rak mit-chal-fim!.
24. All wrong!
Ari ,   HK   (10.13.10)
You know, back at the time they used to at least put a fictitious disclaimer on such art work like this article. As an Israeli (born and raised), life took me in a somewhat strange course, and I am living in Asia for the last almost 2 decades, doing business in China for a living. I am now serving as a senior executive in very large Chinese telecom infrastructure cooperation. As I am still learning every day new things about my hosts, I can comfortably say that in general terms at least, I know the Chinese, I know their culture and I speak their language. Mr. Reshef, I am sorry to say that if you will put your theories to a real test you will sadly discover that you couldn’t be more wrong. The title to this article (if it summarizes your theory) is essentially wrong. Israeli Hutzpa never was, is not and never will be a hot commodity in China. As far as the Chinese tick, it will always be considered damaged good. There is no correlation what so ever between innovative mind (an Israeli great characteristic) and what you refer to as Israeli Hutzpa (a bad attribute that some people think is an advantage while the rest of the world, particularly Asians, consider pointless rudeness). Your article is wrong.
25. Ancient cultures
JB ,   Israel   (10.20.10)
What a dangerous world it will be when the Chinese to trade in their age-honored modesty for what the Israelis offer. With all appreciation and respect for our own famous chutzpah, innovation is not something new in the East, which offers a human culture that easily predates our Bible days.
