pini ,   usa   (10.04.10)
remembers these times very well.
2. American guarantees
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (10.04.10)
As a prelude to the war, the Egyptians moved their anti aircraft missiles to the canal, in violation of the cease-fire agreement. These missiles are what allowed the Egyptians to attack. What is important to remember is that the Egyptians moved the missiles with full American support and despite American guarantees to Israel. The Americans weren't being evil, they just wanted to take the Egyptians from the Soviets and were willing to sacrifice the lives of any number of Jews to do it. It is important for Netanyahu to remember what American guarantees are worth this when Obama gives his solemn word of honor to Israel in exchange for real Israeli concessions.
3. ONE EYED TWIT
LAWRENCE RAP ARTISTE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (10.04.10)
4. Golda added, "They smelled blood." No kidding.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (10.04.10)
Israel, they continue reminding us, lives in a very dangerous neighborhood. Yet they continue to act as if strength and resolve are moral failings. "We are tired of winning. We are tired of defeating our enemies," said Olmert quite shamelessly. In the runup to the war, Israel failed to make clear to Egypt and Syria that they should not mess with Israel, that there would be a price to pay for aggression. And so they acted. As Lee Smith makes clear in "The Strong Horse", Israel's neighborhood remains quite tribal; the coins of the realm are power and respect. Today a hesitant Israel fears a man named Goldstone as much as one named Nasrallah. A "Don't mess with us" attitude is a historic memory. And once again, Israel's enemies smell blood.

You get it .So why don't israels' leaders ?
9. Israels deterrents
Mike ,   South Africa   (10.04.10)
What Y-net forgot to mention was that Israel nearly used its nuclear capabilities , that is the main reason why America airlifted all the military equipment Israel needed , they did not want an Armageddon in the area. One has to wonder if America still remembers this especially regarding the Iranian issue !!
10. the 73 nuclear blackmail
observer   (10.04.10)
in 1973, Golda Meir had been secretly warned of an imminent war by King Hussein of Jordan on Sept. 25. Israel's first attempted counterattack on Oct. 8 was a miserable failure. At the end of that day, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan was heard murmuring about ''the end of the Third Kingdom.'' The commander of the air force, Gen. Benny Peled, warned that with the rate of losses his forces were enduring, within a week Israel might no longer have any effective air power. It was in the early hours of Oct. 9 that Moshe Dayan told Golda Meir to prepare the nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union had sent nuclear arms and missiles to Egypt. Any use of nuclear bombs by Israel on Egypt and Syria would have provoked retaliation by Russian nuclear weapons that had been placed in Egypt. Officers of the Strategic Rocket Forces were sent to Egypt. Any use of nuclear bombs by Israel on Egypt and Syria would have provoked retaliation by Russian nuclear weapons that had been placed in Egypt. Kissinger persuaded Meir not to fly to the US for begging or blackmailing Pres. Nixon. Shortly later, American intelligence had signs that Israel had put its Jericho missiles, which could be fitted with nuclear warheads, on high alert. Israel blackmailed the USA by threatening to nuke civilian populations of Cairo and Damascus. within three days a tremendous United States airlift to Israel was in action. The tide was turned. By Oct. 21 the Israelis were within 20 miles of Damascus. Israel was saved by the USA who promised the Egyptians to get all their land back by peace negotiations if they stop the war in a way that will save the faces of the Israeli leaders. Egypt got all of its land back plus 2 billion Dollars/year from the USA. The lesson was Three years of preparation (after the demise of Naser) was not enough to dispel the nuclear blackmail.
11. #2, go read about Operation Nickel Grass
Abe Froman ,   NY, NY   (10.04.10)
#2 is misinformed about the value of American Guarantees. Not only did the USA resupply Israel, it sacrificed 5 years of economic growth due to the Arab Oil Boycott/Shock & Recession that followed. Rather than casting aspersions at America, #2 should be thanking her fir providing the materiel that stabilized the war, indirectly giving him the freedom to be forgetful about history.
12. Yom Kippur war could be avoided.
Yossi remember.   (10.04.10)
In 1969 I was station in Suez canal and one day Moshe Dyan, the most powerful Israeli politician at the time, came to visit the troops. We gathered around Dyan and he told us there could be peace with Egypt that very week, but Israel would have to withdrawal from the Sinai to the 1967 line. the Camp David Accords signed at the White House by Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in September 1978, and the Egypt-Israel peace Treaty in 1979 in which Israel and Egypt agreed to exchange recognition and Israel fully withdrew from the Sinai to the 1967 line.
13. same illusions of the left, Barak, rabin...
Eddie ,   london UK   (10.04.10)
Dayan admitted his "miscalculations". Unfortunately, Rabin did not live long enough to publicly admit this, and Barak is too arrogant to ever do that. Every peace deal sicne oslo has led to war. the same objective, to destroy Israel. Without a west bank and Golan, Israel will be a sitting duck. The WB will be flooded with every terror group imaginable, and the Israelis will be locked by fear of another goldstone report.
14. Israel won but Sinai Peninsula lost

18. Dayan
moshe ,   new york, US?   (10.04.10)
desribed what the israelis faced in 1973, including better fighters on the arab side. What i don't understand is the seeming complacency now by the israeli gov't. Now they face the same enemies with different names, better and more armaments and soldiers. Israel could barely make it through 1973. What will happen when they have to face enemies on 4 or 5 fronts with missiles flying over the country. Will it then be time to beak out the nukes? Why is nothing being done to stop the rearming of Hezbollah, and Hamas. Why aren't there more red lines that israel will act on? Their best chance is to become the 52nd state of the US; that is if the US will even accept so many jews.
19. What has changed with the Arabs since 1973
Tuvia ,   Israel   (10.04.10)
If Dayan said then that the Arabs want the whole of Israel, what makes the corrupt Lefties of today think that anything has changed
20. #6, you are clearly uneducated.
Jason ,   Israel   (10.04.10)
Israel didn't need the US's help in 48 and 67. Israel used their own weapons and vehicles then. Going by your logic, the US wouldn't exist today if it weren't for the French helping the US during the Revolutionary War. Next time, open a history book.
21. JESUSALEN
JESUSALEN ,   JESUSALEN   (10.04.10)

s better for Israel to respond to the land of Sinai to Egypt, and gain a peace that is a great benefit to Israel
23. Leaders tested under hellfire
Brod ,   USA   (10.04.10)
Golda showed that she was a strong leader despite all the miscalculations, losses and challenges. Among the top leadership, she was the only 'man.' What she possessed that the others seemed to lack was the fact that she knew Israel had the last card-the Samson Option. With her strong personality and eloquence, she enlightened Nixon to see the whole scenario. A brilliant and strong leader, Judeo-Christian Nixon knew what was at stake. And he ordered the immediate supply of needed weaponry to Israel despite the opposition of cowards, idiots and AntiSemites within his administration. Israel was also blessed to have brilliant and brave Generals like Sharon, Bren, Eitan, etc who led their soldiers right into battle and knew what they were doing.
24. This serves to remind those who forgot what it's all about
not the occupation   (10.04.10)
Israel is at present a strong and a relatively prosperous country, especially compared to its Arab neighbours. What people forget is that it wasn't always like that. In its early days Israel was a very fragile entity, and the Arabs "smelled blood" for years and tried whatever they could to finish it off, long before the occupation, lobg before 1967. The Yom Kipur war was only 6 years after the occupation but all the wars before were not about the occupation but about finishing the Jews off and destroying Israel. The fear that is come up in the meeting described was a sentiment Israelis felt for many years in this land - fear for their mere survival in the face of a coalition of Arab states who were adamant to destroy it. Poor, weak Palestinians agains the mighty Israelis? far from it. Very few Israelis agains a sea of millions of Arabs, a coalition of big Arab states wanting to destroy it. That was the reality.
25. JESUSALEN
JESUSALEN ,   JESUSALEN   (10.04.10)
I am the LORD your God ,you shall have no other gods before me,you shall not make for yourself an idol,do not take the name of the LORD in vain, remember the sabbath and keep it holy, honor your father and mother, you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness against your neighbour, you shall not covet your neighbour wife, you shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbour.
26. #10 you are mistaken. This is what happened:
73 Historian ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.04.10)
During the war the Soviets resupplied Egypt and Syria 9 times more than what the US resupplied Israel and they were still defeated. The only reason Egypt agreed to a ceasefire is because the Israelis had surrounded and cut off the Egyptian 3rd army after crossing the canal. The Egyptians panicked because they knew their army was now at Israel's mercy. Kissinger contacted Golda and told her that destroying the Egyptian 3rd army was not an option. When Sadat asked Kissinger to tell Golda to spare the Egyptian army from destruction, Kissinger told Sadat that he should negotiate directly with Israel and to Kissinger's surprise Sadat swallawed his pride and agreed. The only people that were saved by the Americans in this war were the Egyptians. As far as American weapans deliveries are concerned, they did not arrive in Israel in time to make a difference. Once Nixon agreed to ship more weapons, the Israelis felt more confident and were more willing to deplete their existing stockpiles knowing that they would now be replenished.
27. #6 you prove what I said
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (10.04.10)
Without American meddling, the Egyptians wouldn't have advanced the missiles, there would have been no 1973 war, Israel would be energy independent since 1976, there would never have been the American military and civilian aid. Egypt and then the rest of the Arab world would have eventually made peace with a strong Israel. Instead, the Americans incited a war that they leveraged to get the Egyptians away from the Soviets, Israel had no choice but to buy the over-priced American weapons or die, which eventually led to Israel's dependence on America and corruption of Israel's politics. I can go into greater detail if you want, but that will bore you. I am not blaming you: Kissinger was a genius who chose to sacrifice Israel for America's interests because that was his job. But that does not mean that Netanyahu has to drink the KoolAid,

NEVER AGAIN IS MORE THEN A SLOGAN IN ISRAEL.AND BELIEVE IF A 1973 SENERIO REPEATS ITSELF THE ATTACKING SIDE MAY IT BE ARAB OR PERSIAN WHO REMAINS ALIVE WILL ENVY THE DEAD///////////////////
30. #6, not really
Danny   (10.05.10)
The Arab advance had already been halted by the time America woke up. What they did allow is for a stalemate to become a victory and stopped the USSR intervening militarily to push it back to a stalemate. Of course if Israel had not been forced to allow missiles up to the canel.....
