31. re 10 & 26: both are right to a point and misleading
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (10.05.10)
The US cleared out European depots for 10days to resupply Israel and gave intel on Egypt positions and movement. This help Israel get in position to cut off Egyptian army that had out run anti-air missile defenses and artillery, their plan was good for the first attack but was poor after that, in part to large US resupply.

Going by your logic, the US wouldn't exist today if it weren't for the French helping the US during the Revolutionary War This is actually true. Read your history.
35. #26 Israelis' dispair prevented Egypt from crushing them
observer   (10.05.10)
US let Israel stretch 1973 truce - documents WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The United States gave Israel the green light to keep fighting Egypt and Syria after the official time for a cease-fire in the war of October 1973 and even encouraged it to do so, according to the released U.S. government documents. "You won't get violent protests from Washington if something happens during the night, while I'm flying," U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir at a meeting in Israel on the afternoon of Oct. 22, 1973, a few hours before the deadline for a U.N. cease-fire. 50 Israeli tanks stepped 100 km from Cairo versus 500 Egyptian artillery and an army of anti-tank missiles. What prevented Egypt from crushing the Israelis? it was nothing but fear from the despaired Israel using nuke. The stand of the Israelis was very weak to the extent that after less than a year Israel pulled back leaving a strip east of Suez Canal and in 1982 Israel left Sinai altogether. Israel failed the nuke test. Remember the Libyan Civilian airliner bought down by Israel in early 1973, that was another nuke failure! No country will anymore trust Israel "wise" use of nuke in any future confrontation.

Apropos the "Arab Oil Boycott/Shock & Recession that followed": The oil boycott started by the arab league, was undone after European countries signed agreements that opened Europe for immigration/invation by muslims...

"What prevented Egypt from crushing the Israelis?" Egyptians find it challenging to multi-task, observer.... it's not only what you think.

We [I] am extremely grateful to the Americans for their generous help with military aid, especially in 1973.I took part in this war and know very well how vital, critical, your help was . A friend in need in need is a friend indeed.Your are absolutely right when you say that the middle east map would be far different without our getting USA help. Some people in serious denial perhaps have trouble grasping this.
40. casualty-sensitive Israelis & mass casualty of 73
observer   (10.05.10)
Alarming rumors of heavy Israeli casualties were circulating in Israel, which the Israeli government did nothing to allay. Then it issued its first casualty figure, admitting to 656 dead so far, which hardly stemmed the mounting anxiety within the country, especially as no figures of wounded were given. This figure obviously did not include the casualties of the battles of the fourteenth Oct. Israel suffered three times as many casualties in 3 weeks of fighting as the United States did during almost a decade of fighting in Vietnam. The 1973 war produced unprecedented numbers of soldiers suffering from combat shock and other psychiatric problems. The ratio of psychiatric cases was as high as 23.1 percent of all non fatal cases.
41. the 73 battle stress
observer   (10.05.10)
The intense fighting in 1973, produced a high ratio of psychiatic cases, with figures ranging from 12.3% to 23.1% of all nonfatal casualties. The IDF had to develop doctrine for treating battle stress victims AFTER the war. Many reservists served much longer than three weeks. In 1967, the IDF began demobilizing major units two days after the cessation of hostilities; but in 1973, Israel faced a very different war termination. Governed by the appearance of post-traumatic stress in the troops after only less 30 minutes duration of hostility to overtake a civil flotilla ship, in the future wars stress may be pre-truamatic as well.

Israel, ungreatful? Trully a stupid, stupid statement. You can't grasp the scope of Israeli gratitude toward USA, then and now...You also make it sound like America gave something for nothing in return. Shame on the American educational system for failing to mention Haym Salomon, and the Jewish Community of Philadelphia for the sacrifices made while sponsoring General Washington and his shoeless, and poorly equipped congressional army. But look it up #6...and keep the aid coming, it's paying off!

Historian ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.05.10)
Israel did violate the ceasefire to gain ground but you must understand the circumstances. When Israel was desperate for a ceasefire during the first days of the war the Arabs refused. During the 3 week war Israel suffered almost 3 times the casualties that the US suffered in Vietnam during 5 years of war. Then when the tide of battle finally shifted to Israel's side, the US cooperated with Soviets and Arabs to impose a ceasefire on Israel. With the Egyptian 3rd army army at Israel's mercy and Kissinger not allowing the Israelis to destroy it, Israel had to improve the ceasefire line position for 2 reasons: 1. In case the Arabs change their mind and resume the war after recovering during the ceasefire and 2. Creating a deterrent and solidifying a victory over the Arabs. The fact is that the Arabs panicked after the Israelis crossed the canal because the their forces in the Sinai were defeated and there was only a Lybian armored between the Israeli army and Cairo. This worked out great for the Americans. With the Arabs in such a weak position Egypt abandoned the Soviet Union and became an American client. They realized that if they could not defeat Israel with the surprise attack that succeeded beyond their wildest expectations, their only chance to get Israel to relinquish the Sinai was to become friends with the Americans so that they would force Israel. By giving Israel an extra 6 hours to solidify the ceasefire position the Americans ensured this outcome. As far as Israel's nuclear deterrent, the only thing it may have accomplished was to deter the Arabs from launching missiles into Israeli cities when the smelled blood during the first days of the war.
44. #31 Israel did not use the weapons
Historian ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.05.10)
By the time the American weapons arrived in Israel the war was almost over. Israel had enough weapons to fight the war without the resupply but was afraid of depleting it's stockpiles in case the war got worse and fighting entered Israeli cities. In the panic of the first days of the war the Israelis also miscalculated the amount of weapons they had stockpiled...they had more than what they thought. When the US agreed to resupply it gave Israel the confidence to deplete it's stockpiles and win the war.
45. Agree 100% with version of Historian, Toronto
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (10.05.10)
Another factor for the delay in America re-supplying Israel with arms, was Henry Kissinger. Being Jewish, it didn't suit his image of himself, unfortunately, to be seen jumping to help Israel
46. tips for #43
observer   (10.05.10)
>>On 25 October 1973 U.S. forces went on Defense Condition (DEFCON) III alert status. The >>Kennedy CVBG and additional amphibious forces entered the Mediterranean. Only during the Cuban Missile Crisis on 22 October 1962 and after 9/11, the US Armed Forces were ordered to DEFCON 3. Coupled with Israel's pushing her own nuke button half-way were the reasons to end the war. >>in 1973, I saw with my own eyes a couple of Israeli fighter aircrafts after being hit by Egyptian SAM rockets. At the moment I saw one fighter plane sublimating into an orange smoke, and the other plane evicting its two pilots, then I realized that the story of radar was just a big trap for the Israelis and Americans, alike. Der Spiegel, 5 November 1973: "General Yitzhak Rabin had announced that his country had military plans for all eventualities, including the occupation of the North Pole. But it seems that the sweeping Egyptian onslaught at midday on 6 October had not been included among Israeli 'eventualities'. For this oversight, they paid a heavy price.

Ricardo Macher ,   Karne Shomron IL   (10.07.10)
Mohmed, you are right and I deep appreciate your words. You see, now thousands of Israelis go to Sinai for vacations. They talk to Egyptians, share the same beach. There will be a day where Tel Aviv streets will be packed with Egytpian tourists and Cairo will have Kosher restaurants again for Israelis tourists. Inshallah. Bezrat Hashem.
49. when politics and military mix..
romanian-canadian ,   canada   (10.10.10)
..the outcome is not always the best. too bad israel is looking at others for decisions she alone should make. but have it from a foreigner and friend, had israel pursued her goals, those blue stripes, top and bottom, on her flag, would have become reality by now. i only hope there won't be a second olmert, to sell jerusalem and israel 'on behalf' of israeli people. with such prime ministers, who needs enemies. and israel is so small she can't afford too many strategic mistakes.
