2. No mention is made of his ill fated part in the ........
Adina Kutnicki ,   Israel   (10.10.10)
relinquishment of our Temple Mount to Wafq control. NOT only was the reclaiming of our most holy site fought with Jewish blood and treasure, he had NO problem with handing the keys to our Muslim foes.He who controls the Temple Mount controls Israel.... He set the dastardly precedent of appeasement by handing back that which is ours, not only through biblical and historical rights, but through moral rights and the spoils of war. He caused irreparable harm to our political and historical rights!
3. and Churchill was an alcoholic manic-depressive
oferdesade ,   israel   (10.10.10)
i understand ulmert's a really nice guy. does that make him less of a crooked disaster to the city he sold and the country he misled? begin was charming. did that make him any better a leader when we needed him? it's politics. nice guys finish last (except peres).
4. Confused article "Dayan had no influence
ab   (10.10.10)
but the Chief of Staff adhered to it[Dayan's opinion] in a very firm manner"... Doesn't it prove Gen.Shalev uttering the above opinion is still not in the clear about the disaster of 1973 ?
5. ali #1 just the opposite
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (10.10.10)
I was there and we had a real hard time catching up with the Egyptian Army it ran so fast. No army in the history of the world has ever collapsed so completely with so many advantages as the Egyptian Army. The only reason we didn't take Cairo is because we didn't want it. The Egyptian Army is truly the worst military force in the Middle East. As for Dayan, the author must be smoking something because we all knew that he was a lousy officer as far back as the War for Independence. Heck he was even worse than Sharon and that is saying something.
6. #2 THANK YOU ADINA
LAWRENCE RAP ARTISTE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (10.10.10)
Moshe Dayan ,the one eyed moron who gave the keys to judaisms' holiest place on earth to our bitter and defeated enemies .What a fool he was to give away the Temple Mount .Dayan was the epitome of the israeli myth typical sabra par excellence .He was extremely brave in battle but had zero jewishness in his soul .
7. dayan
moron ,   galut   (10.10.10)
he was labor --as such what more could one expect?jewish leadership is often too timid even without relentless hostility of the press and a 'nation of president's'...i think this is because israel is too dependent on foreigners and jews are too few.
8. Dayan
PAL   (10.10.10)
You still have a country and are a free people, I would say he did his job.
9. More brilliant then almost any other
Omri ,   Israel   (10.10.10)
When other general won such wars against all odds? Dayan is still a myth and will always be, noone is perfect but as a general having him probably saved many lives if not all out country today.
10. Ali #1Russia gone nuclear alert to save Egypt's Ass
john   (10.10.10)
Never forget your 3rd army was surrounded and at the mercy of the Israeli forces, the road to Cairo was completely open to Israeli forces , Sadat was begging for a cease fire.
11. #2, everything you stated, could not be more true
Brian ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.10.10)
except the irreparable part, have some faith, this nation is still very young, I hope to be alive to see Israels 100th birthday, and see where we are then. Nothing is irreparable. The fact that this nation is so crazy and does such crazy things makes it impossible for our enemies to figure us out, so there is a bright side to it all, as frustrating as it can be sometimes, if it was not so insane it would not be Israel. It's crazy, and tough and beautiful. I just had one of the worst weeks of my life, but at the end of it all, I am drinking Gold Stars and smiling, because no where else could things be so hard, and crazy, and illogical, and I love it.
12. Still have difficulty understanding
Danny   (10.11.10)
how the Yom Kippur War "shattered" the myth. In 1967 the Egyptians just ran away. In 1973, against overwhelming numbers and superior weaponry, Israel not only stopped the advances but turned them around and completely defeated both the Syrian and Egyptian armies.
13. What's New, another Israel myth bites the dust

I always read your posts because they are smart and right on money.
15. #10 john (10.10.10)
observer   (10.11.10)
50 Israeli tanks stepped 100 km from Cairo versus 500 Egyptian artillery and an army of anti-tank missiles. The TV Israeli force stationed west of the Suez canal was besieged. They didn't enter Ismailia city, neither could it enter Suez city except with heavy losses, Egyptian militia with antitank missiles forced it to retreat to outside city. Golda Meir's visit to Zaitia village was just a TV show of existence Near Suez!. "the road to Cairo was completely open to Israeli forces"? absolutely not, Egyptian army forces are in the same time few hours from Israeli cities. On the request of Dyan in the early days of war atomic bombs were set on 13 aircrafts in Negev base to blackmail the USA to send tanks and ammunition and to drag the legs of the USSR.
16. #10 Sadat was NOT begging for a cease fire
observer   (10.11.10)
much to the surprise of Kissinger, Sadat accepted the offered cease fire, Kissinger himself said that. Do you believe that a bigging guy would have surprised Kissinger, even if Israelis call him Jew-hater?
17. Nothing compared to arrogance of "Oslo" 1994
Z Lando ,   Tekoa, Israel   (10.11.10)
1. The author obviously did not ready the protocols, which showed the opposite - Dayan was the only cool head after the first initial shock. 2. This is nothing compared the the arrogance of Peres/Beilen who were able to con Rabin (which was never difficult to do) to allowing Arafat and his terrorists into Israel. Remember Beilen telling us all that if they "dared" to use violence, we would "smash them" and take it all over???
18. like saying Oslo was a mistake
Golan ,   modiin   (10.11.10)
Dayan's Myth was broke 37 years ago. For you to write about it now seems sort of silly. However it should be stated that the 1973 war was a huge victory for Israel having turned back the Syrians and Egyptians. But Israel chooses to remember the faults more than the success.
19. 1973 shattered the myth of Arab victory
Golan ,   Modiin   (10.11.10)
to remember Yom Kippur war as an Egyptian victory is like to remember WWII as a German victory.
20. WAR IS OVER AND THIS IS THE BEST
Mohmed ,   Alexandria, Egypt   (10.11.10)
SHALOM TO EVERYONE IM AN EGYPTIAN CITIZEN AND I ADMIRE MOSHE DAYAN HE IS ABSOLUTELY THE MOST FAMOUS MINISTER OF DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF ISRAEL SO FAR AND I DONT THINK ISRAEL WILL GET ANOTHER DAYAN AGAIN I READ ALOT ABOUT HIM AND I KNOW HOW REALISTIC HE WAS CAUTIOUS AND ADMITS HIS MISTAKES AND THIS IS A REAL MAN CHARACTERISTICS I UNDERSTAND MANY ISRAELI DISLIKE HIM NOW BECAUSE HE DIDNT STRIKE EGYPT AND SYRIA WHEN HE HAD THE CHANCE COUPLE HOURS BEFORE THE EGYPTIAN SYRIAN STRIKE BUT EVERYONE MAKES A MISTAKE BUT OVERALL THE GOOD THING IS PEACE WE EGYPTIANS FOUGHT WITH YOUR ISRAELIS 37 YEARS AGO BUT NOW WE HAVE STRONG PEACE WHICH IS GREAT FOR EVERYONE OF US OUR FORMER PRESIDENT SADAT VISTED ISRAEL AND AND SHOWED HOW BRAVE HE WAS AND HOW COMMITTED HE WAS AND RECOGNIZED ISRAEL EXISTENCE PEACE IS PEACE AND WAR IS WAR EGYPTIANS AND ISRAELIS NOW CAN BE TOGETHER SWIMMING IN THE SAME SEA LIKE IN TABA AND I THINK THIS IS ALOT BETTER THAN FIGHTING MY GRANDMA WAS RAISED BY A JEWISH WOMAN WHO WAS LIVING IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT AND JEWS BEEN LIVING TOGETHER AND HAD GREAT RELATIONSHIPS AND I MEAN GREAT, THE MOST FAMOUS ISRAELI SPY WAS AN JEWISH EGYPTIAN FROM ALEXANDRIA THAT WAS ELI COHEN PEACE IS GOOD GUYS FOR EVERYONE SHALOM AGAIN
21. MOSHE THE LOSER
LAWRENCE RAP ARTISTE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (10.11.10)
I do not want to hear nor read about this traitor called Dayan who gave the temple to our enemies .Dayan was a loser.
22. DAYAN= TZIPI LIVNI WITH EYEPATCH
LAWRENCE RAP ARTISTE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (10.11.10)
Pair of pathetic losers.
23. #21 #22 #20
Omri ,   Israel   (10.11.10)
Aside from his lefi side he saved us all and dedicated his life for the state of Israel back from the days of WW2 were he lost his eye in. You may say he made a mistake there but NEVER SAY HE WAS A BAD MAN, HE WAS BETTER THEN MOST OTHERS. THe yom-kipur war that started so badely with arabs having all the advantages was still won its unbelieveable how people think he should be given credit for his skills. The misstake was on political level not military and the military part he did with excellence. #20 I'm glad you think so and i predict more people will take you're way of thoughts now when we have peace + a common enemy- the extremists from Iran. Looking at history the Muslim world had a lot less anti-semitism then the christian world and the Muslim anti-semitism started when Israel was made but as peace holds that will fade away with time and in a few decades things may be back to the way they were. Hopefully.
24. #2-ADINA - the EMET & nothing but the EMET!!!
Bat-El ,   Israel   (10.11.10)
Yashar Ko'chah to you for having the courage to say what is the EMET!! Am Yisrael has suffered tremendously since '67 because of his bleeding heart liberal politics and lack of religious-Jewish Identity to Eretz Yisrael... that is the only excuse I can give to this man, who has destroyed what could have amounted to an incredible MEDINA & who knows, perhaps have heralded in Mashi'ach much earlier! He did the greatest diservice to Am Yisrael & Eretz Yisrael!! He was an unfaithful husband and an unfaithful citizen to this LAND! Why should we be surprised by any of his actions? Yesh Din v'Yesh Dayan... not Moshe Dayan! Chodesh Tov u'Mevorach l'kol Am Yisrael.
25. yemach shemo
Eytan Dayag ,   Brooklyn, NY   (10.11.10)
Dayan gave the Temple Mount back to the Muslim Waqf in 1967. That one treachery outweighs anything else he did throughout his whole life. May his memory be blotted out.
26. #20-Yom kippur war lessons
mike ,   new york, NY   (10.29.10)
Yom Kippur war ended well for all sides. Israel needed to learn a lesson for the sake of its' long term survival and in the end it did survive. Egypt achieved a great military success by crossing the Suez canal, which no one thought it could do. That improved it's national confidence. All this made possible the peace treaty that benefitted both countries. As a result , both countries emerged winners in the process. Here's hope that this peace will last for all generations to come.
27. #12 keep it quiet
Dan ,   k's   (04.14.13)
If Egypt thought it lost the war, they would not have come to Jerusalem and agreed to stop fighting. If Egypt had known the tremendous loss they suffered in 73 there would have been more wars since.
28. Egyptian Success
Laine ,   montreal   (04.05.20)
Egypt assaulted the eastern bank of the canal with some 10,000 troops on Oct.6,1973.Facing them were 453 Israeli soldiers in scattered outposts. Those are odds of 22:1.Not much of a success in my view.A few days later,on Oct.14 the Egyptians tried an all-out attack on the now mobilized IDF.Egypt suffered a heavy DEFEAT-255 Egyptian tanks were lost for 5 Israeli.
