1. You're reading the tea-leaves wrong...
David ,   Hartford USA   (10.13.10)
Israelis are told to prepare their safe rooms exactly because the morons think they can win the fight. Israel cannot absorb a several thousand rocket and missile barrage, especially if many are long-range, heavy payload rockets from Iran and Syria. So what's going on? Israel must be preparing the 'mother-of-all' pre-emptive attacks against her 'neighbors.' Once that attack has started, some rockets will get through, which is what the safe rooms are for. But at least, once and for all, the Arab psychopaths of Hizbollah and Hamas will be destroyed (and much of Lebanon and Gaza). And if Assad has ANY brains, he'll sit this one out, or Israelis will be having breakfast in Damascus, at his kitchen table.
2. egozi misinformed
alexi   (10.13.10)
Israel is not yet ready to effectively block the bulk of hezbollah missiles and so will not provoke a major crisis. Understand that hezbollah basically cannot lose because they are impregnible. They are dug in a cave, booby trapped with russian kornet antitanks, missiles and rockets of all kinds with soldiers that are indoctirinated and in some cases drugged. And if their people get killed-they are shaheeds. Only nasrollam and kaim worry about death, not the regulars who are sacrificed. Additionally, ehud barak since 1999 does not respond to provocations. Command raids, a few perhaps, mostly he fires at empty buildiings. Ask the 2 soldiers who were lynched in ramallah. they would tell you he is good for nothing. Uri Dann keenly commented that while barak arguably excels at small commando operations, he has failed operatiing bigger land forces as demonstrated at chinese farm, wtihdrawal from lebanon, operation cast lead. His recent paintball orders does not distinguish him at all. As opposed to mofaz, yaalon, sharon, even dayan, barak acts like an olmert, full of cowardice. IDF could use their own rockets in a balance of terror goldstone equation. No, but israel is too moral. No, IDF does not want to send 20000 to clean out bunkers and does not have the solutions ready yet for a 2006 like hezbollah onslaught.

One day , I fear ,Israel will receive a very nasty wake up call .
5. Sounds like Barak is again the key manipulator
Seppo ,   Finland   (10.13.10)
He never lets IDF win. He wants to make appeasements to all enemies. Think about intifada 2000, Barak prevented IDF to do the job, Gaza war, behind Olmerts back he tried to stop fighting without winning Hamas. Or his peace agreements. He does not want to win.
6. Deterrent
Ian ,   South Africa   (10.13.10)
The Israeli government is told what to do by the Americans and the politically correct Europeans. The next deterrent will be the likes of Jewish terror groups and when that happens then heaven help us all !!!
7. Elect Lieberman as PM
Maurice ,   Los Angeles, USA   (10.13.10)
and this percepetion will change real fast. He will not hesitate to use the weapons at Israel's disposal and will tell the world like it is. There are time in history when leaders like him are needed and the time is now.
8. Weak, government encourages eto immediatlynemies
RayS ,   USA   (10.13.10)
The article is 100% correct. History shows us that it isn't the weaponry that decides the fate of a country, it is courage, clarity of purpose and demonstrations of willingness to respond immediatotely to threats.
9. Not enough massacres
Peter ,   UK   (10.13.10)
Ynet oped complains Israel not committing enough "deterrent" massacres in Lebanon and Gaza. How about killing 15000 instead of 1500 civilians. Will that be sufficient enough of a "deterrence". Sick delusional oped!

13. The future is unknowable
Thomas ,   Dixieland USA   (10.14.10)
Chatting and theorizing in abstract while sipping a cup of coffee is one thing and facing immediate death and existential threat is a different issue. Lets pose the question differently: what would you do or a German, Russian, Brit etc. if the invading Muslim hordes started decapitating people, raping women, sowing mayhem as they do regularly in the Muslim world? Beslan, Hamas, genocide in Bangladesh (1971), Madrid, N.Y.C ...don't forget so quickly! Will you walk to your death just like in Auschwitz because the Americans or the antisemitic Brits order you to do - via a Jewish Kapo? The correct question is something like that. Try to answer honestly.
14. Use common sense
Adam Helberg ,   USA   (10.14.10)
I agree that Barak is useless, but it's common sense you don't retaliate with a big war because one soldier is killed. First, at the time it was not clear exactly about who was at fault and secondly a major war would result in many casualties with unpredictable consequences.
15. I liked the artical
Ron ,   OC, USA   (10.14.10)
The V1 rocket was the most cost effective weapon of ww2. Cheap to build, the allies spent considerable resources trying to shoot the v1 down. How little things have changed. What Israel needs are some good cheap weapons of its own: Nape, Daisy Cutters and several thousand cheap rockets. Given Israel's neighbors it is not a question of if the Arabs will use their rockets, but when. If Damascus is ravaged along with Gaza City and Beruit, Israel may escape with a short war-if not, there will be a long time in bomb shelters.
16. The best deterrant is to get rid of the
jason white ,   afula,israel   (10.13.10)
enemy and their supporters. We have to destroy them totally and their infrastructure. If they fire hundreds or thousands of missiles, then we should reply with neutron bombs and make sure the combatants as well as their civilians are killed. But first of all we need to replace barak with someone with guts and brains. And bibi is a wimp also. And make sure that no one will try our military people here or overseas.
17. israels airforce rules the sky
(10.14.10)
nonjews especially muslims are a little bit like dogs. somebody need to show them who the boss is and they want to have some action because it is boring without action. israels airforce rules the sky. hi tech arms can bomb everything from above within seconds. they have hi tech cameras and stuff. its like a video game for those who are using it. the problem is : if israel starts using it too much. the world is going to say "look here they are the intelligent evil jews".

Hal ,   Usa   (10.14.10)
You are partially correct. The problem with trying to arm-chair the potential for future conflicts is looking backwards. The truth is that the big "if" is unknowable. Missles alone are not a decisive weapon, especially used by amatures. All out war is by definition another matter. For all you armchair generals, do you really believe that if Israel was attacked from Syria, Iran and Hezbonia that Israel would ask permission to defend itself? Stop looking backwards. None of the players would be able to survive an Israeli first strike let alone an air assault on critical infrastructure, unlike past punitive sorties. All out war is not a cat and mouse execise. BTW Alexi, stop making Russian weapons or Israel's enemies 100 feet tall. They are not. For most of what Israel can do [non-nuclear] , they have no answer for. The most effective Russian weapon is the Kalachnicov. Bet on it! The total war effort against Iran would be enacted off it's coast, not from aircraft. The technological nature of war is constantly changing. Syria, Iran and Hezbonia have no answer for what will come after them if the big "If" happens. Everyone needs to relax.
19. HUBRIS
Avi ,   NYC, NY   (10.14.10)
The writer of this vitriol does not understand the difference between 'deterrance" and "aggression". A country builds deterrance by having a strong citizenry and a strong army. Going to war every several years does not build deterrance, it only creates hate and the wish for revenge. Going to war every several years with soldiers like the Israeli rifraf only causes our enemies to realize how weak and inefficient we are.

mister buBBles ,   rapTure   (10.14.10)
You got it, crushing victory means "deterrence", or hudna, because it's only limited in time. Nothing sick or delusional about that, sadly, that's the way it worked a few times already and it just could do the trick next round, again. Compare it to economics; every thirty or forty years people usually forget about how things went wrong last bubble, new idiots come around who think they're smarter than everyone before them. The worse the burst bubble was, the longer those lads stay away from risky, dumb business, a few even quit. Somebody ought to tell A'dschad and his many friends, how stinky this particular bubble could be for them, before they try it in vain, once more, and find out themselves.
22. The problem is Barak
jerri i ,   NYC   (10.14.10)
The problem is not that he is a coward but that he has adopted leftist principles. One should note that Golda Meir in the Yom Kippur war did not allow the IDF to bomb Damascus and take out its rulers on day 2 (and military directors )because of the possibility of colateral civilian deaths. Similarly Barak would probably not allow the destruction of the Hizbullah, Iranian, and Syrian high command and ruling cliques on the grounds that there would be colateral damage even if it ment that 100000 Israelis would die because of inaction by the IDF. Also the present rulers should be eliminated since history has shown there is no way that they will negotiate in good faith with a Jewish nonmoslem state. Netanyahu should now eliminate Barak fom his present position to free himself to make an apropriate defence and offence against the enemies of Israel.
23. Re: $19 - correct...
Dan the Jafa ,   Auckland,Aotearoa   (10.14.10)
Going to war every few years does not create deterrence. Winning them does. Big time. Israel should try to do it again. The last wars that Israel was fighing were wars of status quo. They are unwinnable same way as it was impossible to win the status quo war in Viet nam. The war is not a status quo war when the goal is to "show them who is the boss". This kind of wars is lost by attrition and both Israel and USA lose those wars one after another. The war is won when your banner is raised over Reichstag, you know, like in 1945 and Israel will benefit from knowing that the all-out war fought until it is won is the only kind of war that can be won and that's the only kind of war that creates deterrent. A military operation that starts before the elections and ends with a phone call from Uncle Sam is not of deterrence creating variety.

Mahmood, it is sad to have to again explain reality to you. It is you that "creates stories" from where, I don't know or care. The fact that you continue to post your stilted hogwash here is a testiment to your low self esteem. Logic, you poor fool, is not an option for you. They never taught that to you at the madrassa.I have tried many times to use logic as well as humor to strike a cord in your muddled mind, but to no avail. Rather than air the usual laundry list of facts to a boob such as yourself, I have taken a more pro-active route. I do, however, find you buffoonish at best and quite dull at worst, but you know Mahmood, I do have a soft spot for losers so keep trying.
