1. Remember
Lauren ,   Israel   (10.19.10)
The assassination of Itzchak Rabin still reminds of us that we once believed that peace might be possible and how much has changed within and surrounding our country since that terrible night 15 years ago. I miss Rabin and I miss the hope we shared. We must chose and vote for leaders on all sides who still believe in a safer, kinder, better Middle East.
2. #1 talk to the hand in fact tell youself what you want
Al   (10.19.10)
Israel today, after 15 bloody years of Oslo has totally regected Oslo and all that it represents. Get over it and stop erecting monuments to a non entity. The people would rather forget Rabin and his misguided adventure...It brought untold misery with over 1500 dead and over 10K wounded. Those are the numbers...I suggest that you stop bleeding borscht and go out and visit some of these families to get a perspective of reality. Till then you are talking to the hand.
3. There people in the South that don't care for Lincoln
Stewart ,   U.S.A.   (10.19.10)
Maybe we should get rid of his day? What is important is that a majority of people at that time and this time feel it is important. You expect to get a concensus in a democracy? I don't think so.
4. Lauren @ 1, I have no right to tell you what to do, but let
leo ,   usa   (10.19.10)
ask you this question - how do you know what would've happened had Rabin been alive?
5. #3: Funny but the last time I looked ...
Cowboy Joe ,   Calgary, Canada   (10.19.10)
there was no Kennedy Day or McKinley Day. Not being American, I am not familiar enough with your history to be aware of other assassinated presidents but you should know. Just because a president (or prime minister) is assassinated does not mean a memorial day should be established. So says the USA itself! And this Canuck agrees!
6. #2 that's not what the memorial is for
blash ,   Jerusalem   (10.20.10)
No one wants to memorialize Oslo for all the reasons you mentioned. Memorializing the assassination itself is important though because it reminds us of how tragic it is when a Jew takes another Jew's life. It is depravity incarnate and the last thing we need when we're surrounded by enemies for whom our deaths are their only real desire. That is something that we need to teach our children.
7. Remember 9/11 instead...
Tim ,   Princeton, NJ, USA   (10.20.10)
....as it is far more relevant to Israel's recent history. All western countries would do well to remember what happened on that day, lest we forget what we are up against.
8. Leftist sign - not forgetting, not forgiving
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (10.20.10)
There's no evidence that the left has tolerance or reconciliation in mind. The hebrew sign reads, "We won't forget, and we won't forgive." I lived through the assassination of Pres. Kennedy in 1963, of Kennedy and King in 1968. So I find Israel's approach to remembrance quite off-putting. After each of these tragedies, we in America came together in grief, while the left in Israel have used each remembrance to politicize and demonize.
9. israel has a history of forced public mourning -
gawain ,   israel   (10.20.10)
laws governing public behavior on "tisha b'av"
10. The Gandi murder anniversary just passed, and no one noticed.
Tahl ,   Ashdod   (10.20.10)
How come the anniversary of Gandi's murder by a Palestinian terrorist does not warrant a memorial day too? How come only the Rabin murder gets all the high-profile media coverage and sympathy? I guess that for the media, it only counts as a tragedy when a left-wing politician is murdered.
11. #5, Dear Brain Child: It has nothing to do with assasination
Stewart ,   U.S.A.   (10.20.10)
It's a memorial day that most people want. Please, go suck on an icesicle Mr. Canadian.
12. #9
R ,   Jeruslame   (10.20.10)
Actually, there are no laws governing public behaviour on Tisha B'Av. However, there are 'rules' about Yom HaZikkaron and Yom HaShoah. Interesting note though. When the hareidim show no interest in being forced to mourn, everybody jumps on them. Yet, according to this poll, most of the public doesn't believe in 'forced mourning'.
13. # 2 Al: ledaber al kaf?
Peter ,   A'dam NL   (10.20.10)
Is this 'talking to the hand' a Hebrew or an English expression for ' talking to yourself" or 'talking to a brick wall'? Anyway...the failure of Oslo wasn't Rabin's fault. Bibi won office in elections after a hate campaign against Rabin which created the conditions for his murder.. The sabotage of Oslo was both Arafat's and Bibi's/Sharon's fault. IMO.
14. It is enough that we have "Tsom Gedalya"
Roland Seener ,   London England   (10.20.10)
15. Let's not fool ourself!
Genuine Moshe   (10.20.10)
Oslo was necessary for us to build our country and for the Pals to destroy themselves. Bear in mind: 1) we build our economy during the first years. 2) we got rid of the leftist aristocracy who ruled our country. 3) we opened our eyes and freed our mind from any guilt towards the Arabs. 4) we got read of the Pals. But let's not fool ourselves; let's mourn the victims of Oslo and erect monuments to their memories instead.
16. Written by two settlers......obviously
Talula ,   Israel   (10.20.10)
Typical hateful article by typical hateful religious settlers. This country does not have to mourn Yitzhak Rabin, and each Israeli is free to remember him in their own dignified way. However, I believe we MUST have a yearly memorial day for him. It should never be forgotten how much Yitzhak Rabin gave his country and how he paid the ultimate price. His life was taken by a young mentally deranged religious Jew – and that should never be forgotten – it also keeps his murderer behind bars. I'm wearing my Yitzhak Rabin memorial badge with pride and I wear it in honour of a great and wonderful man.
17. tolerance
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (10.20.10)
It is easy to be tolerant ,when one has no conviction. But if one has a conviction, intolerance can not achieve, what sincere words and a smile can .
18. When you remember Rabin and Peres
USA   (10.20.10)
Remember the Oslo accords and how they were indoctrinating Jews into believing in their bull..t
