The Israelis don't trust Obama any more than US voters do. And what about Gaza - neither Obama nor Abbas have guaranteed that the 50% of "Palestinians" ruled by Hamas will go along - so again, why should Israel give Abbas (or Obama) anything until they do?? That is what an HONEST journalist should be asking. Instead we get the last resort of demagogues everywhere - asking what America gets for its "billions in aid" - conveniently forgetting that the military aid was committed under the Camp David accords because the old borders which Carter insisted israel accept did not consitute "secure borders" - as indeed we now see with Egypt abetting Iranian rocket smuggling into Gaza from across the demilitarized Sinai. There is no "aid" - it was a quid pro quo. Israel did its part, and expects the US to honor its commitment. Something an HONEST journalist would have no trouple pointing out. As far as I'm aware,Israel is still a democracy that fairly elects a Knesset and government for the benefit of the Israeli public,not the US administration. Reading these talk-backs from Israelis,I don't spot any zeal from them to repeat the settlement construction freeze,quite the opposite.Not a very scientific survey,I admit,but if that is the consensus of the Israeli public then democracy demands that it should also be the position of their government.
