In principle, nothing ties Chavez & Ahmadinejad to become comrades. The former is an assumed atheist & leftist (more or less) & the latter could be classified as an extreme religious fascist. But since they partake the same hostility towards the US they find it appropriate to join forces & decrease their isolation. A similar case involved Hitler & Stalin & the accord did not last. It is very unusual for an agreement between a democracy & a dictatorship to survive very long since the existence of the dictatorship is a sign of its relative power(see the outcome of the 1938 Munich peace deal). But an agreement between two near dictatorships with fundamentally nothing in common is doomed to fail & cause major miseries for their people. It just makes these opportunists feel more confident & daring to make the wrong decisions.

Would anyone want this kind of society for their children? Particularly the Syrians, Lebanese and Palestinians, who seem to want to court these regimes.
