Really most people are just people and they don't want to hurt their fellow man. For example if I gave someone a knife and told them to go stab someone-they're not going to do it. Somehow things get turned around when someone in authority says it. However they're probably not any more of an authority than I am. At least I really think things through, because life is sacred.
32. Brave ?
Tamer   (10.25.10)
This idiot is brave ? take him to Israel, we do not want him
33. Egypt/Israel border peaceful for 30+ years
Zvi   (10.25.10)
There have been no wars between Egypt and Israel for over 3 decades. The only Israelis an Egyptian soldier is likely to meet are Israeli tourists in Sinai. In fact, the 32 year period of peace between Egypt and Israel (1978-2010) has now lasted LONGER than the 30 year period of warfare that preceded it (1948-1978). So technically speaking, he shouldn't be basing his refusal to serve on refusal to point a gun at an Israeli. ;-)

36. in Egypt, commercial refuseniks are called draft dodgers
observer   (10.25.10)
those who know how recruitment in the Egyptian army goes in the case of college graduates are very sure that Maikel is no-one but draft dodger. The obligatory service for a college graduate is usually a mere one year. For, a high school graduate, it's only 2 years. But every so ten years, the army would recruit a very small fraction from college graduates as officers. For those to-be-officers the view may be grim; a full blown youngman posing himself to earn his living to set up for himself a career, fortune, wife ...etc would frustrating experience. Nothing to do with Israel's existence, Nothing to do with the military establishment's propaganda campaign against the very unimportant him. Try to figure millions of the 80 million Egyptian population whom the military establishment can easily recruit; it takes only a couple of bullets rather than a vets doctor to poison the enemy dogs at the border. That reminds me of the commercial olim who emigrated from the late USSR to Israel to earn better economic status.
37. youre doing national service by speaking out
Richard Sherwin, Her   (10.25.10)
well, Ive got to change my mind. Youre the first Egyptian intellectual Ive heard about who says Israel has a right to exist. I think youre doing your country the equivalent of national service by saying so. I wish you lots of luck and a happy life. Oddly, I feel I should add, Congratulations to your country Egypt for creating and educating and keeping you alive. All the best.
38. Yes Brave
David Osah (Canada) ,   Canada   (10.25.10)
The problem with you guys is that you allow your government to dictate how you should live your life. Maikel Nabil Sanad has come out of that bondage and its wonderful. To me he is a brave man.

42. pro-Palestinian Jews
Israeli   (10.25.10)
there are lots of them mostly in Europe and US. they are kind of annoying only because they have never been here but think they know everything. Pro-Israel jews do the same too. Can everyone stop being pro or against and just let us live together in peace?
43. Veterinarian Refusenik
Tough Girl in TA ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.26.10)
You are a good man, Doctor. Wish there were more like you. Your people have refused at all costs to want to make peace with us, no matter how we have tried. You have come to realize we have a right to exist, just as everyone else has a right. But, the world doesn't seem to think Jews do, but we won't lay down, and we won't give up. You are also a Veterinarian, good for you. You have a kind soul. Maybe you can help change the world. Salaam/Shalom

47. I love Israel, TOO!
Mamduh Schauki ,   Cairo, Egypt   (10.26.10)
It's wonderful seeing such a brave man talk about his peaceful thoughts and his support for Israel... And I would like to add my voice to him, I'm an Egyptian 24 year old guy and I have always supported Israel and its right to exist, and I know for sure that I'm not alone, I have a few friends that are like me, and there's Maikel, and many others... Let it be known that the hate portrayed on Egyptian media toward Israel does not represent all Egyptians by any means. I support Israel against Palestinian barbarian Islamists, and I support you, Michael Nabeel for your courage. May God be with you!
48. What is this guy talking about?
M ,   Boston, USA   (10.26.10)
Recruitment goes against my conscience. I don't want to act against my conscience, whatever the price. I also am not willing to be a pawn on the chessboard of an arms race, struggles and bloodbaths in the region. I don't want to point a weapon at a young Israeli, recruited into obligatory service, defending his state's right to exist. I think obligatory service is a form of slavery and I have worked for years for my freedom." After stating this he goes on to say that he blames Palestinians for conflict and feels for the ISraeli soldier - I mean I am not negating his right to conscientiously object but you object ARMY RECRUITMENT yet sympathize with one of the most highly militarized society's in the world? Bit off his knocker in my opinion... Not saying you can't disagree with Egypt's draft policy, but at the same time you can't say you disagree with it due to your pacifist nature and then support a state that drafts all males and females to the army for 3 years and jails those who do not...
49. #48 M, Boston - This is what...
sheri ,   rockville   (11.02.10)
He's sympathizing with Israel's NEED to recruit it's young BECAUSE of the Palestinian policies. He's agreeing with Israel's pacifist nature that would not have an army & has only a defensive army,... because of the policies of those aiming at her. So, he doesn't want to be one of those adding to the chessboard of arms race, & bloodbaths in the region. At this point Egypt has to defend against the same threats - Hamas in Gaza has already shot missiles at Egypt, & Iranian leadership's nuclear arms race puts coercive pressure on Egypt - so I see need for the Egyptian army that he's ignoring. But overall, he's a rare Egyptian Arab who's making a statement about the overall Arab position & roles in creating the bloodbaths he doesn't want to support.
50. To Egyptians supporting living in peace with Israel
sheri ,   rockville   (11.02.10)
Thank you! Together we can get to a better future for all. My friend who did an exchange program in Egypt, told me there were supporters of Israel's existence & of peace there in her experiences. Nice to see you here :).
