1. What else?
Lippy ,   Proud Israeli   (10.26.10)
Mr. Archbishop, maybe the birth and existence of Jesus and the very religion you represent "cannot be based on sacred scriptures"? I would suggest you think before spitting venom!
2. Support for Israel
Larry ,   Philadelphia, USA   (10.26.10)
I agree that the Pope should issue a statement denouncing these statement both on theoligical and humanatarian grounds. Israel is the home of both Judiasm and Christianty to say otherwise is not only a historical blunder of the first degree but is also a theoligical untendable position. It also could cause a humantarian issue that can not be evaluated until the consequenses of such an outragious statement occur. I beleive that Pope Benadict shoud not only issue a correction but have the bishop apoligise for his mistake.
3. So what?
Ed   (10.26.10)
So what? I am not Jewish or Israeli but I am pro-Israel and believe that Israel earned its right to exist based on everything that took place since 1948. If the governments and people of Israel want their country to be a country for the Jewish people, then so be it. On the other hand, since I am not Jewish, I am by no means required to believe what the Jewish people believe, including the part that says that they are the chosen people or that the land of Israel was promised to them by god. Again, my support for Israel is not based on any religious arguments but only based on what happened in the Middle East since 1948.
4. Surprizing they didn't blame Jews for the priest's sexual
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (10.26.10)
abuse of children. All these freaks can do is blame the Jews for their troubles instead of honestly fixing what they created.
5. Denying Jewish connection is denying Jesus' connection
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & New York   (10.26.10)
Doesn't the synod and the Pope realize that by denying Jewish connection to Israel they are denying Jesus' connection too?
6. What about link of Jesus the Jew to Israel?
jack ,   san diego   (10.26.10)
7. quite the opposite
alone ben caro ,   usa   (10.26.10)
The ride on the donkey(16th of nissan) was to preserve the Karat and sinai(ex:13:13) not replace it. GODs covenant with Abraham was unitlateral and unconditional. Abrahams descendants thru jacob will inheirit the kingdom and follow the pentatuech. non-isrealis, just like the mixed multitude from egypt, must come into the covenant just as the pentatuch describes. We don't have much more time to wait for this fruition.
8. These dhimmi priests
Raphael ,   Netanya   (10.26.10)
do not see any injustice in deporting 1 million Jews from arab countries: this fact is enough to declare the Palestinians' "right of return" null and void.
9. Your headlines are dangerously misleading.
noa ,   israel   (10.26.10)
I am pretty sure in the article preceding this, the remarks were actually attributed to the Pope. Judging by the talkbacks to that one, it must be true. Although this is also very bad, it is not quite the same. You don't have to do this to get readers.
10. The pope MUST denounce this
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.26.10)
but , this will not be well received by those present at this synod , who were , as stated in the first article on this subject , bishops from our region , that means mostly arabs and so palestinian supporters . What could we await from such people , one of them had even transported weapons for fatah terrorists . The pope , if he is sincere [ ??? ] has to reprimand them , and tell them that they have to follow what he said . But will he do it ?
11. Story blocked from West news, along with Synod statements
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (10.26.10)
This story or Vatican Synod statements very hard to even find in any US/EU news sources but has started to get around on the internet. If Christian support in US is lost then Israel is truly in for a hard time next year and Catholics are the largest single Christian group.
12. I'm a Catholic and I pray the Pope denounces these word
John ,   Peoria, USA   (10.26.10)
As a Catholic, I pray the Pope denounces these words. Catholics and Christians alike need to stand with Israel 100%. To condemn Israel and give the Palestinians a pass, certainly will embolden the anti-semites of the world as well as radical muslims. I stand with you Israel.
13. When has the Vatican ever been pro-Jewish or pro-Israel?
Chaim ,   Israel   (10.26.10)
Although many Catholics risked their lives to help Jews during the Holocaust and many Catholics are pro-Israel, the Vatican never has been. Although the Vatican did officially apologize for centuries of persecution of Jews, there has been little to no change in it's actual dealing with Jews since the apology. When we look to Israel's true friends, we look largely at Jews, political conservatives and Fundamentalist Christians. Definitely not the Vatican.
14. The problem with the vatican and Muslims is
jk ,   nyc   (10.26.10)
they think they came to replace us, or that they are the chosen ones. by definition of their religions we are not supposed to exist as an independent people having rights to the land etc. We don't need their approval, The land of israel is Go-ds gift to the Jewish people as stated in the Torah. Those priests are so afraid of the Arabs that they want to be on their good side to be protected, first it is not going to help them second maybe we should treat them a little bit , not as much as the Arabs would to teach them to be imparcial at least.
15. Evangelical Christians Stand With Israel!
Pastor Leo Giovinett ,   USA   (10.26.10)
As pastor and teacher of both the Sacred Jewish Scriptures and the New Testament for the Biblical Christian(s) I reject both personally and rightfully the statement by Melkite Catholic Archbishop Cyrille Salim Bustros at a Vatican Synod. He is misspeaking both for the true Biblical Christians and he is in serious error with his replacement theology. The Jewish people have never been replaced by the Church nor will they ever be replaced according to sacred scriptures! •Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. Jeremiah 33:20-21 (KJV) •I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Romans 11:1-2 (KJV) There is no honest way to replace Israel. They are and will forever be Unique before G-d. Baruch Hashem Adonai. 16. Don't Be Like Them
John DeLancy ,   Alaska, USA   (10.26.10)
JK, it won't help you to sink to the level of the Islamists, and it won't reflect well on HaShem. Also, you don't need these groups to favor you or approve of you. As you said, the Almighty Himself gave Israel and Jerusalem to His chosen, the Jews. No comdemnation from man will change the word of the Lord. Besides Israel isn't alone; Christians (and anyone who believes the Scriptures) know the Jews are back in Israel in fulfillment of those same Scriptures. Build and prosper in your land!
17. To n 12
Luiz Felipe Haddad ,   Niteroi, Brazil   (10.27.10)
Dear John, I am a Catholic too, and like you, I endourse Israel's struggle against the bad ones who try, since 1948, to destroy her own existence. We may criticize some issues of her foreign policy. But, into the refered first point, we stand, strongly, with our Jewish brothers. I hope our Pope won't accept those wrong words from the synod. Yes for the Palestinian State, since she, verily, recognizes her neighbor. Salute from Brazil. Luiz Felipe Haddad.
18. Right after Israel denounces Ovadia
Sure ,   NYC   (10.27.10)
Instead of butting into Pope's affairs, discipline your own Chief Racist Rabbi.
19. #11 - statements very hard to even find in any US/EU news so
split ,   usa   (10.27.10)
It looks more like complete blackout and there's a reason for it ,...
20. #3 Ed
dgd ,   south africa   (10.27.10)
I thank you for your support for Israel but as a Jew, feel that people throw around the statement "chosen people". I believe its a poor translation of what it really means; and that is Jews really are role models of how G-d would like human beings to behave/live. Please keep in mind of how the human race behaved before G-d chose a small nation to represent how he wanted humanity to conduct their lives.
21. sue the vatican
nadav ,   tlv   (10.27.10)
for stealing jewish property for the last 2000 years! Let them open their vaults under St. Peters'- they keep all the looted booty from the Jews (As well as Cathars, Free Mason, Protestants, and Muslims)!
22. Yet RabbI Ovadia Yosef claims goys are here to serve Jews
Avi ,   Israel   (10.27.10)
Seems like Israel should clean its own house before it critisises others.
23. Replacement Theology
Carole ,   Colwyn Bay, UK   (10.27.10)
This is worrying, replacement theology! Many christian churches believe this lie! I don`t know how prevalent it is in the catholic church!
24. Yes Charles #10
(10.27.10)
the pope should reprimand this synod and its bishops, and he would most certainly do it if he was free to folllow the inclination of his heart but there are at least two factors that complicate the situation: 1) The vulnerable situation of ME Christians in Arab controlled areas. That he shrinks back from throwing them under the bus, I hope that you understand. 2) The contentious Arab bishops are trying to force the popes hands which he certainly dislikes but at the same time he does not wish an open schism with the Arab Christian part of the Church. So an open denounciation of the synod is not probable, but maybe some clarification of the Vatican position. As your PM Netanyahu the pope has to navigate between Scylla and Charybdis :-)
25. the temple of athena the virgin
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (10.29.10)
parthenos, means virgin in ancient greek. and the temple there held a statue of athena holding nike, the child, in her arms. hundreds and thousands of years b.c.e. then along comes paul from judea and all of a suden there is a new improved virgin to worship. i don't have to join the dots do i? but are they still selling this pap, adapted so the relevant people will swallow? sigh. as much about social order as mohammedanism, perhaps, now?
26. The Poop Feom The Pope
Simcha ,   So.Cal.USA   (10.30.10)
You can forget a denouncement. His Holiness has spoken. Yet no one has said to nim," What did you do in the war Papa?"
