Iran must be encouraged to move forward ; )
3. Ahmadinejad: women's rights advocate
Froi ,   Philippines   (10.28.10)
...let him have the seat and the floor too. Had not the UN got enough of what he endlessly spew?
4. Iran as member makes mockery of agency
Cynthia ,   USA   (10.28.10)
Iran has one of the worst human rights records. Their abuse of women includes public stoning, political rape as a form of persecution, public hanging including minors as young as 16. During the protests, women were murdered and violently beaten in the streets by a government that should protect them. Iran has no place in this agency.
5. UN is just more redicules with time...
Omei ,   Israel   (10.28.10)
Next thing we see is Israel treats its woman badly?
6. UN = uninformed nobodies, useless nuts.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (10.28.10)
7. Iranian Womans Rights
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (10.28.10)
I agree that Iran should have a position on this board. Why? Iran's and Saudi's history and posture toward woman is so horrendous and draconian, that they will expose themselves as the barbarians they are. The idea that this will be impetus for reform is a fantasy. These blood thirsty hooligans will stick out as the cruel killers they are. Further, as they will naturally attempt to install their archaic beliefs, the distance between reasonable society and daily life in Iran and Saudi will become clearer. Give them enough rope to hand themselves.
8. UN
richi ,   Israel Eilat   (10.28.10)
i really believe that the UN should be depolitised, All its over agencies should be made of national representatives who are chosen by an international panel based on proffesional knowledge. It wont entirel solve the problems of the UN but it may at least turn it into a slightly more reasonable organisation. Recently the UN has turned into nothing more than a propoganda machine for its members. Due to veto powers of the US mainly it means that the majority of unreasonable resolutions are quashed but eachand everyone of these resloutions undermines the un's reputation and thus its ability to stabilise the world which is in essence its mandate. It is time to understand , that countries that have no interest in human rights, finding peaceful solutions, or solving world issues, without reference to ideology dogma have no place in an organisation that very nature is find pragmatic solutions.
9. Backwards!
Ray ,   Germany   (10.28.10)
#2 you are a total retard...no more needs to be said!
10. Let's see
Ernest ,   USA   (10.28.10)
You could promote prostitution, public nudity, child moestation, spreading sex acts to children on television, internet, incest, abortion, child molestation, teaching "safe" sex in schools rather than morals and all the like and all the while having them invoking the nation as following God daily in school. How hypocritical. It's still the kettle calling the pot black. Wake up. How this Church has degregated. The penalty for adultary was death at one time, that was condoned, all the rest is condemned. Sick people and sick laws.
11. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
R ,   Israel   (10.28.10)
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
12. Why not?
Andrew Brehm   (10.28.10)
The UN have a board to watch over women's rights and Saudi-Arabia and Iran have an excellent track record of keeping women's rights under a strict watch.
13. # 11. Heeee Heeee Heee Heee Ho Ho
Mr Green ,   Manchester   (10.28.10)
Heeee Heeee Heee Heee Ho Ho!!
14. UN women commission blamed only Israel
Manny ,   Canada   (10.28.10)
This story forgot to discuss the record of the UN commission on the status of women. Year after year, it blamed one country alone, Israel, for alleged hardship against Palestinian women and children. Nothing about stoning, female genital mutilation, honor killing, war rapes, etc. I expect the new agency to be like the old. I trust that Bachelet is a good person but she will be powerless to stop these resolutions and will be too ashamed to denounce the ugly result of her own commission.
15. UN is completely and totaly irrelevant
Mike ,   Israel   (10.28.10)
16. Only reason they let donors eg USA have a seat..
rebecca ,   Modiin   (10.28.10)
is to make sure they keep paying. They will not have enough to stop the votes of Iran. Saudi Arabia etc. When with the US citizens realize where their hard earned $s are going.
17. WELL TRIED CYNTHIA.......................#4
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (10.28.10)
But be prepared to have Iran on board.By passing a sentence on a women accused of adultery does hardly make Iran a rogue country. You are the ones who have abondoned the value of women and lost the moral, not the Iranians.Be very much aware of that.
18. IRAN, WOMEN, UN
Ezra ,   Florida   (10.28.10)
Well, they finally are putting the fox to guard the chicken coop. Maybe their first order of event is to stone Hillary to death?
19. UN mockery
hebrew prophet ,   israel   (10.28.10)
Just another example of who actually runs the UN, the Muslim bloc ,that,s who ,no finer example ?
20. That about says it all
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.28.10)
Iran and Saudi Arabia will to sit on the UN women's rights board. That would be genuinely hysterical, were it not for the plight of women in both Iran and Saudi Arabia. We need to dismantle the U.N. and build something better in its place.
21. To: No. 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.28.10)
I'm sure you look simply fetching in a burqa.
22. To: No. 17
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.28.10)
Oh, yeah, Iranians value women so much, do you know what is now the leading cause of death of Iranian women between the ages of 19 and 40? I will tell you: childbirth. You see, Iran's modesty laws forbid a male doctor to treat a female patient; female doctors cannot treat male patients. The number of Iranian women entering medical school is in serious decline. If you live in a small village and the only physician is male and you need a C-section? You're out of luck. Midwives cannot help you there. Except they will cut out the foetus in the hopes that it is a boy. Mom, of course, is toast. Talk about value; for that matter, talk about morality. Iran on the UN women's rights board? Not in this or any other lifetime, boychik, at least not until the Islamofascists that are steering Iran into the Stone Age are overthrown .
23. BALDERDASH FROM SARAH.................#22
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (10.28.10)
Making it look as though Iran was an under-developed country in the remote jungle of Africa. The more she attempts to represent Iran as such the more she makes herself look like an idiot.I think we should allow her to continue doing that.Let her be happy whilst the Iranians continue their progress in different fields.
24. They can teach classes in how to beat your wife, some at
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (10.28.10)
the UN might not know how to do it properly and others might not even know it was a muslum tradition.
25. Mahmood #23 Progress?
(10.28.10)
Sarah is right. As long as Iran has the leaders it does (Ahmadinejad is a good example) it will be a backward country. Tell us of your many achievements. Your Nobel prize winners and all the wonderful things that Iranians have invented that have benefited mankind. Tell us Mahmood and then we can see some real balderdash.
26. U.N.Women
Simcha ,   So.Cal.USA   (10.28.10)
I'm all for women's rights groups but this one has one major, very negative drawback. The title of the group starts with U.N. This article reflects how effective it will be.
27. Iranian Women's Rights
Neda Agha-Soltan ,   Tehran   (10.28.10)
I don't get it, what's all the controversy about?
28. To: No. 23
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.28.10)
You aren't half wrong. The only countries that rank lower than Iran happen to be in Africa and Central America. Google it yourself, if you wish, but here are the facts: Infant Mortality ------------------- Israel: 3.6 per 1,000 live births Iran: 27.06 per 1,000 live births Maternal Death in Childbirth -------------------------------------- Israel: 7th in the world, at 5.9 per 100,000 live births Iran: 56th in the world, at 27.8 per 100,000 live births Well, well, will wonders never cease, Mahmood! Iran is not a third world country -- fourth or fifth world would be more like it.
29. Virginia did it
IRAN#!   (10.28.10)
Virginia executed a low IQ woman for exat same crime, e.g. helping here lovers to kill her husband, last month. What's the problem with Iran doing as USA does, isn't it what the Americans want?
30. WRONG STATISTICS.................#28
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (10.28.10)
Refer to the UN publication.Readers are invited to do so as Sarah seems to be fabricating the statistics as well.Wonder where from?
