1. No Surprise !
Yisrael ,   Jerusaelm, ISRAEL   (11.03.10)
It's not like it was long ago. Nowadays, Haredim usually make the lives of neighbouring seculars miserable by insisting they adopt a more observant lifestyle. There is no concept of live and let live. Consequently, often by design, they force the seculars/less observant out to create exclusive Haredi enclaves. This has happened in Ramot, Beit Shemesh, and the battle is being joined in Kiryat Hayovel. North Jerusalem has been secular-free for a long time. It was not always so. This has all been caused by the Haredi themselves. They are the intolerant ones, often considering seculars as not even being Jews. As long as they do not think for themselves, and rely on their rabbis for total guidance, there is no hope at all that this will change, for their rabbis seem to be in a race to out do each other in making Jewish life more and more restrictive. These figures can only go up in the future. When I see a Haredi in my neighbourhood, I fear it is the beginning of an invasion I must resist, and I have to constantly remind myself to judge others with kaf zechut ! When you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind.
2. haredim did it to themselves
nadav ,   tlv   (11.03.10)
they have succeeded to ghettoize themselves both physically ad socio-econimically by denying their own children free will and an education. At the very least. They can go on to believe their superstitious nonesense and medieval laws, but that is NOT what bothers everyone. They must shoulder the same responsibilities that burden secular Israelis: National Service, working full time, and paying taxes- at the very least! they should live and let live! That is not too much to ask of them...
3. Why not ask the Hareidim
Dov ,   Efrat, Israel   (11.03.10)
How many of them have visited a secular person's home, would they hire a secular person, would they buy an apartment in a mainly secular building, etc? I doubt that the results would be any different.
4. You need a survey to state the obvious
Talula ,   Israel   (11.03.10)
What secular in their right mind would voluntarily move to a Haredi neighborhood? That must be akin to a prison sentence. Talk about restriction of movement - you'd have to barricade yourself in your home from Friday night until Shabbat goes out. Walking to synagogue in sweltering temperatures, fully clothed isn’t my idea of great weekend.
5. We are all JEWS, not "haredi" or "secular"
Menachem ,   Israel   (11.03.10)
Not that long time ago similar divisions existed between Askenazi and Mizrahi/Sephardi Jews. Today these divisions are thankfully mostly gone. We Jews are a tiny people with many external enemies and when can simply not afford an internal Jewish war. Most Jews, both religious and non-religious, are decent people. We must fight all prejudice among Jews until the House of Israel is finally united. Am Yisrael Chai!
6. Menachem , but one part of our people
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.03.10)
want to impose HIS way of life on the seculars . One part does'nt contribute anything to the Stae . If we were truly one people , EVERYONE had to give [ and receive ] the same things .
7. How about living next to orthodox without the "haredi"?
m   (11.03.10)
8. Secular Intolerance & Racism. How is this PC???
Yehoshua ,   Galilee Israel   (11.03.10)
How can this be allowed..... yet Jews are yelled at for not wanting Jew hating arab families- who fly their arab flags and hamas bumper stickers- from moving into their community. As usual the far left secular community is a) racist b) intolerant c) not an example for tolerance or peace d)hypocritical to the nth degree
9. #6 Ever think that YOU and SECULARS IMPOSE your lifestyle???
Yehoshua ,   Galilee Israel   (11.03.10)
Billboards, ads on buses, news, tv, radio, clothing fashions- its everywhere. yet you have the audacity to think its only them imposing???????? leave your bubble and your arrogance. your lifestyle is also an option that is similarly forced on the people. Im no chareidi, not even considered orthodox but I find it amusing and arrogant of some secularists like yourself who dont realize the extent of sceular take over and forced lifestyle and values on everyone else. open you door and look out the window without blinders on. porn, violence, women as objects, men as greedy money makers, etc etc
10. # 6 Don't typecast all Ortodox Israelis
Menachem ,   Israel   (11.03.10)
Religion is in my opinion a private matter and should neither be imposed by religious bigots nor undermined by anti-religious bigots. It is legitimate and necessary to fight the religious extremist minority who try to impose their life style not only on non-religious but also religious moderate Jews. However, it is not legitimate to typecast and demonize all Orthodox Israelis as "enemies of state" since a significant and increasing number of them identify with the state, do not want to live in a theocracy and have or are joining the army and the work force. Israel would be better off without the small but loud extremist minority among religious and non-religious alike who try to undermine the national fabric of our common homeland. It is up to us the silent majority religious and non-religious Israelis to make sure that the bigots on both sides fail.
11. So the real truth comes to the surface.
Vladimir ,   Jerusalem   (11.03.10)
The secular public criticize the haredim for not working, call them "parasites" and at the same time does not want to hire them to work. This hidden discrimination is familiar to me personally (it's harder to be a haredi Jew in this country than to be a Russian immigrant). This reminds me of the situation in which the former Soviet refuseniks found themselves. They were kicked from work for their wish to emmigrate and not accepted anywhere and at the same time persecuted and even jailed for "parasitism". The haredim are the refuseniks in Israel. Shame!!!
12. saw lots of soft porn billboards
as an american jew ,   who visited Israel   (11.03.10)
and thought it was over the top and i am noteven religious. in fact the ads were way more than waht you would find in usa....honestly, i think it was mostly shameful to see nearly naked people in ads in both TA down by the water it made me wantto close my eyes. not respectful at all and WAY over the top.
13. 11 - haredim can't be compared to refuseniks
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (11.03.10)
what is noble, beneficial, or prinicpled about refusing to work and expecting the state to allocate hard-working citizens' money to them and their large families? well, i take that back - refuseniks did what they did because they were against the state and tried to undermine it by refusing to comply with what they perceived as immoral. haredim have an identical view of the jewish state, so that makes them a kind of "evil refusenik". i stand corrected.
14. Yehoshua
Charles ,   Petach Tiklva   (11.03.10)
But we were imposed by those religious to live without public transportation on shabbat , everything dead yom kippour , kosher food in the IDF , and so on . Those are things that CHANGED our way of life . Billboards let you free to look at them or not .
15. Menachem , this article talks about charidim
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.03.10)
and i do it too . I agree with your # 10 .
16. to 12
hanan ,   jerusalem   (11.03.10)
i respect your honesty .. iam no a jew my son once worked as a farmacist in a haredi comunity he said that many of them say it with respect and some sadness -- you are best of all secular jews who came to work in this center ..do you know why .. it is the kindness and humanity and skillfull in his work
17. Kosher Food in the IDF!
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (11.03.10)
Oh noes! We can't haz cheezburgerz!
18. To #8
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (11.03.10)
Yehosuha you are pointing in the wrong direction. All you have said about the so called left can be said about the Haridim. The Haridim don’t even recognize others Haridi sects that have a different rabbis, they discarnate between Ashkenazi & Safardi. They want to force their way of life on everybody else and do not tolerate others especially Reform & Conservative Jews. They want to live in completely segregated communities. Remember when you point your finger at something 3 fingers are pointing back at you.
19. 99% don't want
l ,   los angeles   (11.03.10)
Oh come on Ynet, this is just pushing hatred. Of course seculars don't want charadi and charadis don't want secualrs as neighbors. It is two different life styles. ho hum any news???
20. Alternate headline:87% of seculars are close-minded
adam eliyahu   (11.04.10)
Which has been my personal experience, since I moved to Israel. The secular movement in Israel has also been historically racist, against Sphardic and Yemenite Jews. It is also a fact that most secular Jews are embarrasingly ignorant about their own rich heritage. They sing the praises of democracy while bellowing that the growing relgious majority is evil. They are a strange and illogical breed.
21. discrimination shows need for affirmative action
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (11.04.10)
The ugly side of the secular Israelis will manifest itself in various illegal inequalities: unequal housing, unequal pay, etc. unequal education.
22. secular jews do not wand haredi neighbours
freed ,   london england   (11.04.10)
As an english jew I was shocked by this article! Would these secular jews prefer their neighbour to be a armed robber, murderer etc? I really don't understand why their is such an intense hatrd towards tHe haredim in Israel. I don't believe tHere is such diversity anywhere else in the world. I am wondering if the haredim were asked if they would want these secular jews asa neighbours, what their answer would be! At the end of the day Hitler killed ALL types of jews - a jew is a jew however secular lives they lead! Learn to love all jews after all your one of them!
23. #22
Chad ,   Tel Aviv   (11.04.10)
Maybe if you lived here, you'd understand why there is such immense resentment towards Haredim
24. what did you expect after the ultra orthodox riots
ghostq   (11.04.10)
against seculars in Israel I am surprised that you r suprised, from hospital that postponed building the ER, posponing could risk lives, especially when they r in rocket range or for jerusalem riot that neerly killed motorbiker, this year, after ultra orthodox throw metal board in the middle of the road, if this is Judaism than no wonder people become secular in Israel. very similar to what's going on in catholic chritians.
25. Heredi are a riot! More fun rioting than earning a living!
jewbiedoo ,   USA   (11.04.10)
A disgraceful realization that some leeching parasitic Jewish people, who, following their extreme beliefs, foul the nest, make their neighbors who they IMPINGE upon, reel in disgust, and then try to FORCE their weirdness onto those around them to bend over and kiss their tuchas' to accept their NONSENSE & bizarre beliefs/demands...heredi need to keep their extremes to themselves, learn to contribute instead of stealing from the labors of others, and become Israeli citizens foremost. or go back to the places that threw them out to begin with.
26. A Menace
Ocker ,   Israel   (11.04.10)
These numerous ultra orthodox sects and cults who have infiltrated and proliferated into Jerusalem suburbs have overwhelmed and destroyed secular residents quality of life. Originally Har Nof was intended to be a a mixture of secular and orthodox residents until the bigoted extreme ultra orthodox rid themselves of any secular influence in that area. I observe this hareidi influence is now expanding into other secular areas These religious fanatics have gained voice and power disproportionate to their numbers and is a major threat to the majority of secular Israeli citizens. Unless there is a reform in the political system which should separate religion from the State these rapacious ,self serving extreme ultra orthodox factions will continue to be a menace.
27. Building ? 10 KM distance
Avi ,   Israel   (11.07.10)
Wouldnt live in 10 km radius of such people, before you know it they take over and start inflicting their life style on others.
