1. Obama does not have to worry about Jewish voters
Elhrac ,   USA   (11.07.10)
The majority of American Jews continued to vote for Democrats. They would vote for Osama Bin Laden if he runs as a Democrat.
2. 90% of Israelis were glad.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (11.07.10)
The question to ask is exactly who was not glad & for what motives. Yes, the media was full of articles sympathetic to Obama & warning us at the same time not to see this as a good thing. But, we know the bias of the media towards anything Left. The same can be said of some of our politicians - and their motives are sadly less than patriotic. They had hopes of Obama forcing concessions on us against the will of most of the electorate & at the same time, using Obama to get back into power here in Israel. To say that this positively stinks of opportunism is an understatement. Everyone else understood quit well - Obama's defeat was definitely a good thing for us. It will be even better when he loses in 2012. The trend all over the civilized world is the repudiation of Leftism. Defeat comes from within, not without. External threats can be dealt with.
3. The election signaled a sea change
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.07.10)
... with respect to perception of Middle Eastern geopolitical issues in the minds of the American electorate. While the economy and other domestic issues were surely in the forefront of the American voter's thoughts, the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli conflict surely played a role. Obama's pathetic and unpopular outreach to Iran made the American people much more aware of Ahmedinejad and his rhetoric, so much of which is dedicated to existential threats to Israel. The American people do not like Iran, do not want improved ties with Iran and do not want a nuclear Iran. To the extent that the midterm elections were not so much a vote for a particular candidate as they were a vote against Obama and his policies, a great many candidates ran -- successfully -- on a platform which included support for Israel (which is -- correctly -- perceived as beleaguered) and against support for the "Palestine" Authority (which is -- again correctly -- perceived as a corrupt terrorist organization bent on demanding concessions without making any). Some very well-publicized terrorist attempts in the lead-up to the elections proved to be a blessing for Israel. The American electorate is not stupid, and can connect the dots between Israel as victim of terror and the United States as victim of terror. As one candidate pointed out, not all Moslems are terrorists; but all terrorists seem to be Moslem. The die was cast. Obama had already woken up to the fact (however belatedly) that Americans do not want closer ties to the Islamofascist world and they do not want a nuclear Iran. Last Election Day, he realized that the bond between the American people and the State of Israel is stronger than ever. Americans have become increasingly aware that the threat of terrorism looms over the country constantly. That has made Americans very, very sympathetic to Israel -- and extremely unsympathetic to Israel's enemies, including the "Palestine" Authority, which is widely viewed as a terrorist organization. Abbas' (and Obama's) pushing to the forefront of the settlement issue only served to make the American electorate more cognizant of all the concessions Israel has made to the "Palestine" Authority, without receiving anything in return. Obama was perceived as bullying Israel mercilessly while bending over backwards to accommodate a pompous Abbas. That didn't sit well with the American electorate, either. Support for Israel among the American people has never been higher. On November 2nd, the American people spoke with respect to a great many subjects. Israel’s situation was one of those subjects, and only a complete fool could possibly fail to hear the message.
4. in 2012 I will celebrate Obama's departure
M.Oliver ,   Tel Aviv   (11.07.10)
with all the politically incorrect vigour
5. smart words from Terry #2
a man called Phepps ,   Netanyahu   (11.07.10)
"The trend all over the civilized world is the repudiation of Leftism. Defeat comes from within, not without. External threats can be dealt with." Yes, imagine how strong we would be now without Oslo, and with continued vigorous settlement. We could tell the Pals. that autonomy is all they're going to get, and they'd accept it de facto. Instead we have a somewhat internationally empowered political entity based in Ramallah, and it's purely our own doing. Along with missile-bristling terrorist nests in Gaza and Lebanon. Our own doing. Time to wake up. They're throwing out the Left in the U.S. and even some European countries. We have to throw them out both politically and notionally--get their defeatism out of our minds.
7. correction
that man Phepps ,   Netanya   (11.07.10)
also in my previous post it should say NETANYA not NETANYAHU. Netanya is my home, Netanyahu is something I'm worried about.
8. Don't jump to conclusions
Sidney ,   USA   (11.07.10)
The report of my death was an exaggeration. Mark Twain, New York Journal, June 2, 1897. If you look at the actual numbers, not the media spin, the Democratic defeat was not very great. In the new Senate there will be six fewer Democrats, leaving them with 51 Democrats and two Independents who caucus with them. The Democrats still control the Senate. The heralded great change in the House is not what it seems. The biggest change is that the Republicans now have almost all the white seats in the old confederate states. Outside of these states, the numbers are Democrats 188, Republicans 146. The Republican campaign was subtlety racist, focusing on Obama's color, and succeded in the deep south. Obama was not and is not a threat to Israel as "chicken littles" assert.
9. The US midterm election... a repudiation of socialism
seadog1946 ,   Shooters Island, NJ   (11.07.10)
and the previous election's call for the "The Great Schlep".
10. Obama has little influence everywhere except Israel
Jake ,   USA   (11.07.10)
That's the problem. While other countries tell the US to to mind its own business, Israel acts as a submissive colony. So anything can happen.
11. Bad news for Israel
Barry ,   Boston   (11.07.10)
In Massachusetts the following question appeared on the ballot in a number of communities: Should the state representative from this district be instructed to vote in favor of a non-binding resolution calling on the federal government to support the right of all people, including non Jewish Palestinian citizens of Israel, to live free from laws that give more rights to people of one religion than another? For the most part voters voted for this resolution. Israel can no longer pretend that bad behavior goes unnoticed by American voters or that only Jewish voters count. AIPAC can't mitigate every step the Netanyahu government takes to thwart the peace process. U.S. policy is going to start reflecting this shift in voter opinion regardless of who is in power.
12. #8 Sidney, USA.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (11.07.10)
Sidney, your powers of self-deception are astounding, I mean, really, really astounding. Obama & his far-left wing of the Democratic Party were overwhelmingly repudiated by the electorate because of POLICY. Because of FAILURE. Falling back on the stale racist card is about as stupid as the ''it's Bush's fault'' excuse. The Democrats lost big, not just in the South. And, the Dems lost not just in Congress but they lost most races for governor. If there had been more electoral contests, they would have had a bigger loss. Americans don't like ObamaCare, deficits, bail-outs, czars, intrusive gov't., Chicago style thug politics. They don't like the ''blame America first'' crowd. They don't like an anti-American president who apologizes for America all over the world. They don't like his pandering to Muslims. They don't like his position on illegal immigration. Only the Left cares about race, they are, in fact, obsessed with it. That's because the Left is itself racist, divisive, collectivist rather than individualist. The bottom line is that Obama & his leftist friends are very much out of touch with the concerns of the majority of Americans.
13. Israel now enemy of the United States
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (11.07.10)
...and Obama will have 6 more years to make sure Palestine is created.
14. Yes and no
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (11.07.10)
Obama is an incompetent Jew-hating racist. For Israel it feels good that the American people (in the meantime) reject him, even if the rejection has nothing to do with Israel and everything to do with Obama's incompetence. However, Israel's problems have nothing to do with Obama and everything to do with Israel's leaders. Netanyahu chose to appoint Barak DM, Netanyahu chose to impose the racist freeze in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem while encouraging massive Arab building and Netanyahu chose not to arrest Goldstone. The only good news for Israel will be when a real leader is elected.
15. No time for complacency - Israel is still in danger
Marcella   (11.07.10)
(Dear Editor, this is an amended talkback) Mr. Segal's writes: "European representatives will think 100 times before recognizing a virtual state, and Obama will make the biggest mistake of his life if he fails to impose a veto on it. " Two assumptions based on what - exactly? The EU is already bowing to the influence of oil-rich countries, including Iran. And they are the biggest single provider of financial aid to the PA Arabs. The EU already voted for a resolution to make Jerusalem the Palestinian capital. I can't think of any negative political or economic consequence if they vote in favor of a Palestinian state. Can you? In fact, France and Spain are already actively working on it. As far as the US president is concerned, we can predict that with his own agenda in shambles he has only one sure way to earn world recognition: by creating a Palestinian state. He will vote for, or at least abstain, in a UN Security Council vote on Palestinian independence. What does he have to lose? His popularity is very low and it's unlikely that he will run for a second term. On that account, this is a very dangerous time for Israel. But Mr. Segal writes: "At this time, what the Jews have to do is stop scaring themselves." Quite the opposite. Those reassurances can only add to the general sense of helplessness in the country. They reaffirm the idea that Israel's fate depends on what the US does or does not do. Not true! The fate of the country is in God's hands but it also depends on whether the Jews are willing to defend it. There is a diplomatic war going on aimed at destroying your country! Israelis should be EXTREMELY CONCERNED and should be taking drastic measures to prevent an Arab unilateral declaration of independence by pressuring the government to formally ANNEX JUDEA AND SAMARIA. A UN vote sanctioning an independent state would be an almost unsurmountable obstacle if Israel wants to keep the heartland. If pressure has been too much for the government so far, just imagine what it would be after the vote. A recent article said "annexing Judea and Samaria would end years of wavering uncertainty and confusion, traits which radiate weakness and guilt and are constantly exploited by our enemies. Annexation would project a clear and firm message to our enemies and all their international supporters that this is our land, the only one we have, and we're here to stay. (Yoel Meltzer - "Annexation Now", on American Thinker.) Actually, the real obstacle to peace is the weakness of successive Israeli governments and their willingness to be persuaded to partition the land. Partition would result in violent conflict - you can bet on it. Particularly at this time when Iran is rising as the region's leader. For the time being, the Israeli left with its nefarious plans would like nothing better than for you not to worry and be happy.... while the heartland is being swept away from you right under your noses.
16. It isn't over yet, so don't get too excited
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.07.10)
17. Obama , Anti Israel?
JOE GUEST ,   Fort Worth, U.S.A.   (11.07.10)
Obama will not be re-elected, but he will and has gone against israel in every way possible. He has Hillary doing his dirty work, but insignificant. Of course , they will try to gang up on Israel with players such as Jimmy Carter , Mandella, Tutu,et al. Not to mention the whole of Europe and most of the rest of the world. But israel must and will stay strong! God forgive those who go against the land of Israel and the curse that will follow them in their endeavor to destroy Israel. I am not worried fore Israel, because I know that God is watching Israel and never slumbers on His watch. He will and has conquered all evil and that includes the foolish nations that would go against Israel. Be careful U.S., don't go the way of the Nazis and all the others The Arab world will fight forever ( if that were possible ) , but some nations know they have limited time, such as Britain and the U.S. Don't try to defeat Israel. You will lose every time.
18. To: Sidney at No. 8
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.07.10)
Don't be silly. How do you propose to account for the gubernatorial and state assembly election results? Besides, how do you account for the loss of Russ Feingold to his Republican rival in the great NORTHERN LIBERAL state of Wisconsin. How do you account for the great NORTHERN LIBERAL state of New Hampshire going red? Michigan? Pennsylvania? Ohio? Indiana? Illinois? The Southern states went red a long time ago, and it had nothing to do with race. Moreover, in case you hadn't noticed, the so-called "Dixiecrats" have crossed the aisle for years. So do a number of other conservative Democrats. (So much for your two Indies that caucus with the Dems). By playing the race card, you are beating a dead horse. Stop fomenting trouble; you clearly have no grasp of the true interpretation of the midterm elections. It had nothing to do with race, and for you to imply otherwise is inflammatory and inaccurate. Besides .... it doesn't explain all those northern liberal states with long histories of being Democratic going red. Have you contemplated the possibility that this election was a resounding referendum on Obama's policies and his murky background, and not the color of his skin?
19. To: No. 11
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.07.10)
"For the most part?" Can you be a little more clear? Percentages would be a good place to start. And the ballot question appeared in the United States, where establishment is constitutionally prohibited. There is no shortage of countries where establishment is not an issue, and where the right to free exercise is granted to all. So what's your point? Israel is not the United States. And the ballot question you describe appeared in only a number of communities, according to you. Hardly a commonwealth-wide referendum, eh? Did you think we wouldn't notice your deliberate attempt to deceive? "A number of communities," indeed. Where? Cambridge? The Newtons? Brookline? Bet it didn't hit the ballots in the rest of Massachusetts!
20. #8 Sidney's FAILED LOGIC
JB ,   SoCal, USA   (11.07.10)
Doesn't this sound good on paper: "In the new Senate there will be six fewer Democrats, leaving them with 51 Democrats and two Independents who caucus with them. The Democrats still control the Senate. " Not so fast there, bro. Maybe you're forgetting, but every 2 years we have 33 or more U.S.Senators running for office/re-election. Dem. Senators who want to be re-elected (which means ALL of them) will be distancing themselves as far away from the extremely toxic Obama as possible. Translation: there will be no lock-step votes for our dear Pres. Schmendrick this time around, and thus your numbers DO NOT COMPUTE. Great posts from Susan and Terry as always, and from Phepps and seadog. Re: Barack Hussein Obama ~ "His ass is grass and we are the lawnmower!"

the left is the main driver of anti/semitism today and thus the hands of israels enemies have been weakened..at the same time israel cannot expect americans to be more zionist than israelis forever..especially if democrats including jewish democrats have anything to say about it because they are mostly assimilationists and,as in ancient times, the hareidim care mostly about praying and builing yeshivas, not sovereignty they leave survival to god instead of idf that g/d has sent for them....
25. #12 Terry, amazing how an Israeli knows so much our politics
Sidney Brooks ,   USA   (11.07.10)
We can agree that Obama has been a poor president and the Democratic Congress ineffective, but on nothing else. You have given me the standard Fox News line. Why don't you read the polls more carefully and you will discover that voters support none of the Republican policies. "fewer than half in the national exit poll (48 percent) favored repealing the health-care law, and just 39 percent supported extending the Bush-era tax cuts for all income groups." "A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll this summer found that three-quarters of Americans don’t want to cut federal aid to education — high on the hit list of most fiscal hawks — and more than 60 percent are opposed to raising the Social Security retirement age to 70." If you compare the new Congress with the Congress that Reagan faced after the 1982 election, you will find that the Democrats will be better off. Reagan stormed back to win reelection and set the pattern for the country up to now, disasterously in my opinion. The greatest harm to the Democrats this year is that a significant part of their disappointed base did not vote. Contrary to the standard mythology, America throughout its history has been a liberal country. Too many people make up history rather than studying it. Terry, keep watching Fox News, whose picture of this country is as reliable as the media portrayal of Israel.
26. There's hope for Obama yet
Schreiber ,     (11.07.10)
Over 35 counties in Illinois missed the deadline to mail military ballots to soldiers defending America. But in Chicago, county election officials have taken special steps to ensure that no inmates at the Cook County Jail are unable to cast a ballot. The Chicago Board of Elections hand delivers ballots to the jail. They don’t even wait for the inmates to apply – they bring the applications with the ballots! So if this administration legalizes undocumented aliens and make sure that every prisoner gets to vote, Obama may have enough votes to be reelected. Since several electoral races were quite close, the fate of the country may be decided by foreigners and murderers. How about that!
27. This election was a turning point in post liberal,
tanya ,   tel aviv israel   (11.07.10)
post intellectual trend. Never before America was so much united against it"s selfish, arrogant, greedy liberal elites. If American Jews will continue to stay in the avangard of liberalism, they can blame themselves only .

I gather from your commentary that you follow your news through Obermann,Maddow ,Mathews et al. I am sure that you get a chill up your leg when Obama speaks. I have terrible news for you...you are the one that refuses to open your eyes to reality, FOX news is middle America today. There is none so blind as he who will not see.
29. To #19
Barry ,   Boston   (11.08.10)
The results in the Massachusetts ballot question on a resolution supporting Palestinian rights were as follows: Arlington NO 5,497 YES 6,857 Medford NO 1,711 YES 1,843 Cambridge NO 1,185 YES 2,339 Watertown NO 3,562 YES 5,174 Medford NO 2,229 YES 2,365 Somerville NO 1,847 YES 2,329 Chelsea NO 1,455 YES 1,030 Brookline NO 335 YES 613 My point is that this shouldn't even be on the ballot in the U.S. yet it is and has a lot of support in a country that is Israel's number one friend. If these ballot questions start appearing in more communities it really doesn't matter what party is in power in the U.S. Politicians will ultimately follow public opinion.
30. 1...they may be coming to their senses...

they did support Obama to the tune of over 80%...now it's slightly lower than 50%. Still way too high. We must continue to work on exposing Bucking Ofama for what he is.
