34. 700 left-wing nuts in 1 (one) Brookline precinct
Greg ,   Brooline, MA   (11.08.10)
That silly question, according to our town's web site, was on ballot exactly in ONE voting precinct and received 700 or so votes from Barry-like loonies. Quite possible, the nuttiest areas of Cambridge also had it on ballot :) No impact, of course, even on local town policy, not mentioning US, but now these nuts can pretend they speak for American voters :)
35. Hagai Segal. You are a misleading character.
Eran ,   Singapore   (11.08.10)
Hagai, stop your braiwashing of people . Stop your false appeasement. You mislead the press and the man in the street by your biased expression. The average Israeli knows very well that Obama has been BAD news for Israel by just looking at his anti Israel moves in the last two years. But I agree with your truth; "Obama abused Israel, he now sustained a serious political blow, and this is good for us". and that is good news for Israel.
36. Obama abused Israel?
Sean ,   Montreal, Quebec   (11.08.10)
Thus spoke the experts of the persecution complex! How can you talk about your your sugar daddy like that? Did he not allow Israel to implement a fake building freeze by awarding an inordinate number of permits ahead of time? Did he cease the morally reprehensible shipments of arms to the oppressors of the Palestinian people? Did he not allow Israel to continue being -according to the US State Department- the largest recipient of American aid? Did he not allow Bibi to visit in spite of Bibi's public declaration that the Americans were easy to manipulate? On the contrary. Israel continues to suckle on her American parent. People should stop complaining under the circumstances, lest the world wake up to why most Israelis don't like their American president! BTW... one would have to be suffering from a serious case of inflated self importance to think that the recent elections results had anything to do with Iran. Sarah are you listening?

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.08.10)
Non-Jewish citizens of Israel have all of the rights of citizenship while not having nearly all of the obligations. As to "Palestinians" in the West Bank -- they are under the control of the "Palestine" Authority, not Israel. The "Palestinians" in Gaza chafe under the bit of Hamas, not Israel. Your math is a little off, too. I don't see how a ballot question in eight notoriously liberal areas of the equally notoriously liberal Commonwealth of Massachusetts translates to a ballot referendum throughout all of the United States. But your point is moot in any event -- there are many non-Jewish citizens of Israel who enjoy the full range of civil rights and liberties which are enjoyed by Jews in Israel although, as I pointed out, not nearly all of the obligations of citizenship. As to public opinion in the United States -- well, I note for the record that while the Commonwealth may have remained largely blue, the rest of the country has gone incredibly red. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is, therefore, scarcely representative of American opinion.

You couldn't prevent Jim Oberstar from your district from being defeated, so what do you think the odds are that Obama lasts more than 2 years.
39. To: No. 36
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.08.10)
Yes, I actually read your ridiculous diatribe. 1. Israel imposed a construction freeze for the agreed-upon duration. The "Palestine" Authority failed to do anything until a week before the moratorium was due to expire. Whatever building permits were issued before -- and held in abeyance -- for the duration of the freeze are now fully legitimate. Abbas had ten months in which to act, and failed to do anything. How is that Israel's fault. And why should Israel now extend the freeze? 2. "Oppressors" of the "Palestinian" people? Oh, wait! Do you mean the "Palestinians" that launched 12,000 missiles into civilian areas of Israel for a period of eight years? And, by the way, you need to update your information. Israel is not the single largest recipient of U.S. aid. In fact, aid to Israel is a tripartite structure which benefits the United States even more than Israel. I have explained it often enough; do some catch-up reading. Since you are doubtless lacking in the requisite ability to do so, here: I will help you. U.S. aid to Israel is structured in three forms: 1. A small amount in interest-bearing cash loans. There are only two countries in the world with a perfect repayment record. Finland is one. Israel is the other. 2. A somewhat larger amount takes the form of military credits. These credits must be spent in the United States, and carry a back-end provision which requires Israel to inform the U.S. manufacturers of any and all improvements. These improvements have been legion, and all have been shared. And think of all the Americans employed in the military-industrial complex who have not lost their jobs! Would you rather see them thrown out of work and on the public dole, Sean? How about you ask them? 3. By far and away the largest segment of U.S. aid to Israel takes the form of joint-venture investment capital. Do you carry a mobile phone, Sean? Cellular phone technology is just one of many, many of the products of such joint-venture investment capital? Anyone in your family have cancer and need chemotherapy, Sean? Well over half of the chemotherapy protocols in use in the world today are the result of such joint-venture investment capital, Sean. How about facial recognition software? Magnetic resonance imaging? Incredible advances in computer technology -- software and hardware alike. Yes, here, too, we have joint-venture investment capital and Israeli brains to thank for all this. You are remarkably ignorant of the true nature of the relationship between the United States and Israel; you are equally ignorant of the geopolitical realities of the Middle East. You seem to be really nothing more than a foolish and uninformed individual. Get an education. A real one. Try and step beyond your garden-variety hatred of Jews and Israel. We've seen your kind come .... and we've seen your kind go. Sean, are you listening?
40. Obama can still win the 2012 elections
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (11.08.10)
Midterm defeats for the party occypying the White House are very common. FD Roosevelt, Reagan, Clinton, all lost midterm elections, only to win the presidential elections. There are a number of arguments why Barack Obama still has a good chance to win a second term as US president. The Republicans, intoxicated by their victory, mistake a midterm protest vote against the Democrats with enthusiasm for the Republicans. The most compelling explanation for the Democratic defeat is frustration among Americans about the lacklustre economic recovery. Of course if the economy and the employment figures would remain poor, it would seriously affect Obama's chances to be re-elected. Now that the Republicans control the House they share responsibility for government and have to show what constructive solutions they have to offer. Obama has voiced a willingness to work with the Republicans. If the Republican party becomes sucked into confrontationalims by its overconfident hard right wing president Obama could very well prosper as the one who attempted compromise, only to be rebuffed. The extremism of the Tea Party will help him to become a centrist, unifying force, certainly if by 2012 the economy will have picked up. Don't underestimate the political skills of Barack Obama!
41. Jews vote Democratic
ben martin   (11.08.10)
Because they know what most Republicans think of Jews (they love the Jewish people in the abstract and blame individual Jews for all the evils of the world)
42. To: No. 40 -- Part 1 of 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.08.10)
1. No president has ever lost a mid-term election so resoundingly. 2. Obama has no chance to win re-election. In fact, if you have been paying any attention to the pronouncements from the Democratic National Committee, he probably will not be the Democratic candidate for president in 2012. There are far better candidates out there, including Mrs. Clinton. 3. The Republicans do control the House and, given the number of conservative Democratics that routinely cross the aisle, they can control the quality and tenor of the legislation. Which Obama will doubtless veto. It is not too likely that the Congress could override a presidential veto -- so whom do YOU think the United States voters will blame for any stagnation with respect to Congress' inability to enact the legislation to improve the economy and address some of the multitude of other woes facing America today? I think they will blame the use of the presidential veto to thwart policies which the American people have demonstrated they want enacted into legislation. Just another nail in Obama’s coffin. 4. Obama has indeed voiced a "willingness" to work with the Republican party. Thus far, however, his words have completely failed to translate into credible action. This has not escaped the notice of the American people. He is widely -- and accurately -- perceived by the American people as arrogant and condescending. He is also not viewed as particularly cooperative. He wants things his way, and that is not how democracies work. He also worked very hard to bully through the Congress health care “reform” legislation that reforms nothing and, in fact, makes things far worse. Over 80% of the American people hate the healthcare reform act; Obama, however, simply ignored the people who gave him his mandate to lead. That's not very good job security, ever.
43. To: No. 40, Part 2 of 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.08.10)
5. While the Tea Party is not entirely to my liking, it falls well short of McCarthyism. In fact, it is far less conservative than Reaganism. I believe the American people recognize this. The Tea Party does not threaten democracy; if anything, given how Obama has run the country these past two years, they just may be America’s last best hope of restoring a democratic system of government. 6. Barack Obama HAS no political skills. Ever since his run for the Senate, he could count on Rahm Emanuel's incredible abilities in crafting spin, and now even loyal Rahm has bailed on him. To whom will he turn? Jeremiah Wright? And how do you think THAT will sit with the American electorate? Surely you do not need me to provide links to some of the Reverend Wright’s more anti-American and outrageous pronouncements, do you? 7. As nearly as I can tell, an economic recovery is at least four or five years away. And that's an optimistic assessment; most analysts put it at a decade in the offing. We need to seriously reform the capital and investment markets; we need to bring home jobs that have gone overseas. We need to seriously change the way institutional investors operate, and we need to reform the entire banking industry. And -- in these days of a global "village," -- it isn't just us. Believe it or not, Europe and the Far East have far bigger messes on their hands than do we (in the European Union alone, two countries are in bankruptcy and bankruptcy is imminent for four more). China and Russia are a huge drain on American resources -- they are like giant holes into which we pour money, with nothing to see for our efforts and our largesse. Africa is a lost cause economically – politically, it is a giant tinderbox waiting to explode; so is South America (with the possible exception of Brazil). We cannot fix the rest of the world's problems, and if Obama pushes through terrible legislation while effectively blocking legislation which would actually do something positive to set the American economy back on track -- we cannot even clean up our own house. What we saw in the midterm elections is that the American voter is far more sophisticated than they are generally credited with being. Obama's questionable political skill (which is largely, and accurately, perceived to be deliberate dissembling and pure ineptitude) is not a substitute for true political acumen. The emperor -- Obama -- has no clothes -- and the American electorate knows this. They proved it last week.
44. 40. u have a PROBLEM and it is as follows:
(11.08.10)
Bucking oFama is NOT FD Roosevelt, Reagan, or Clinton. oFama is Jimmy Carter on steriods. We AMERICANS get it now and that is NOT the change WE were hoping for! WE AMERICANS do NOT want to be like Europe.
45. 40. u sound like LIBERAL talking points
(11.08.10)
The Tea Party are not extermistists. The are American not British and real Americans still don't want to be ruled by Brits or be soft like Brits. Not much has changed in that respect since the 1700's.
46. No. 42 Sarah B. economical with the truth?
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (11.08.10)
The figure you give of over 80% of Americans hating Obama's reform act are not in accordance with the polling results I checked on RealClearPolitics, a website, dedicated to non partisan aggregation of political news and polling data. The average of numerous polls on the health care plans of Obama and the Democrats shows 40.1% in favor and 51.3% against with a margin of error of 11.2%. Quite different from your "more than 80% against". I would like to know your source for this figure. Interestingly Obama's personal job approval rate remains pretty steady. The most recent poll, one from Gallup, gives Obama an approval rate of 47% and disapproval rate of 46% with only 1% margin of error. His approval rating has remained pretty steady since the beginning of this year. In Congress the ratings of Republicans are just as dire as those for Democrats. You, my dear Sara, can be safely counted among the overconfident hard right, that will want the Republican party to take a confrontational approach vs. the Obama administration. For the Republican establishment around Carl Rove the Tea Party will be a divisive and weakening force. I think and hope, that when push comes to shove, the majority of the American voters - moderates - will give the Obama administration 4 more years to rescue the economy and carry through hard needed social reform.
